Simon D reminded me that it is now nine years since my fateÂful comÂment on Matt’s blog that kicked off this whole WordPress thing!
WordPress is really shapÂing up, and is an everÂmore stable and funcÂtional CMS platÂform. The statÂistÂics conÂtinue to be astonÂishÂing, with more than 70 milÂlion sites around the world. That’s nearly 16% of the web!
WordPress is supÂportÂing a whole industry of WordPress experts, includÂing me: I’m just startÂing my fourth year as an indeÂpendÂent WordPress speÂcialÂist.
Praise must go as usual to the fantÂastic comÂmunity around WordPress, the sinÂguÂlar visÂion of Matt MulÂlenÂweg, and the aweÂsome power of the GNU GPL open source license.
With verÂsion 3.4 curÂrently in the makÂing, I preÂdict it will be another great year for WordPress.

Today is WordPress’ offiÂcial eighth birthÂday (the anniversary of the first release).
I still marÂvel at the incredÂible disÂtance it has come. I’m also still proud that I had a part in its birth. But even more, I marÂvel at the wonÂderÂful conÂtriÂbuÂtion of all the WordPress comÂmunity make to this fantÂastic project.
A cliÂent said to me this mornÂing “This WordPress is brilÂliant isn’t it?†As I helped him set up his fourth WordPress site. You can’t get much clearer praise than that.
So raise a virÂtual beer (or other non-alcoholic beverÂage if, like me, you are teeÂtotal) to WordPress, the comÂmunity, and to another year.
Update: IÂ just spotÂted this tweet from Andrew Nacin:
At more than 20 milÂlion WordPress.com blogs, that puts WordPress at north of 45 milÂlion sites. Wowza. Happy birthÂday indeed.
Wow! 25 milÂlion stanÂdalone WordPress sites plus 20 milÂlion WordPress.com sites! No wonÂder it powers more than 14 perÂcent of the web.

Wow! Another year has passed and it is now eight years since my fateÂful comÂment on Matt’s blog that kicked off this whole WordPress thing!
WordPress is now a mature CMS platÂform drivÂing 13% of the web! It is used for an astonÂishÂing array of very difÂferÂent web sites around the world, from the humblest one perÂson blog to award-winning eduÂcaÂtion sites, celebrity sites, newsÂpaÂpers, and even world leadÂers!
WordPress is supÂportÂing a whole industry of WordPress experts, includÂing me: I’m now in my third year as an indeÂpendÂent WordPress speÂcialÂist.
I believe that WordPress has achieved this massive sucÂcess in no small way because of the fantÂastic comÂmunity around it, the keen-eyed visÂion of Matt MulÂlenÂweg, and the aweÂsome power of the GNU GPL open source license.
With verÂsion 3.1 just around the corner, IÂ preÂdict it will be another great year for WordPress.
