I follow a lot of photographers on Instagram, but Corinne Shiavone’s work is something I’m always glad to see there.  She’s on Instagram as perpetualmobile.

Firepot

January 23rd, 2012 | photography, researchmaterial

Reuters: “A Kashmiri protester throws a “kangri” or Kashmiri traditional firepot towards Indian police during a protest in Srinagar January 21, 2012.â€

Wikipedia: “Small earthen pots filled with combustibles were used as early thermal weapons during the classical and medieval periods. Containers made at first from clay, later from cast iron, known as ‘carcasses’, were launched by a siege engine, filled with pitch, Greek fire or other incendiary mixtures. These fire pots could cause great damage to besieged cities with largely wooden construction… By the mid-17th century, fire pots had largely been replaced by shells filled with explosives, which may be seen as the direct descendants of military fire pots.”

And also: “A kanger; also known as kangri or kangar or kangir) is an Indian pot filled with hot embers used by Kashmiris beneath their traditional clothing to keep the chill at bay, which is also regarded as a work of art.[3] It is normally kept inside the phiren (Overcoat type garment), the Kashmiri cloak, or inside a blanket. If a person is wearing a jacket, it may be used as a hand-warmer. It is about 6 inches (150 mm) in diameter and reaches a temperature of about 150 °F (66 °C)… Regular use of the kanger can cause skin cancer.”

And Then I Drank Crystal Head Vodka

January 3rd, 2012 | daybook, photography, stuff2012

[image] I got this for Xmas.  It’s actually a surprisingly nice drop, with a very schnapps-y finish to it at room temperature.  Probably from whatever lethal impurities lurk in the Herkimer diamond they filter it through.  I intend to chill it down and extract a vodka martini from it later.

Things achieved so far this week include:

Writing a blurb for the back cover of the forthcoming reprint of Howard Chaykin’s SHADOW comics series.  Writing one long and two short emails to BERG that probably made them want to kill me.  Receiving one short message from Patton Oswalt that suggests he wants me to kill myself.  Receiving a smoke signal from that nice Mr Whedon.  And deciding I’m not going to do the GUN MACHINE revision until next week.  I am bruised and convalescent.  Good morning.

Closing up shop until January. Will be adding new content and things here in 2012. If you have suggestions for what you’d like to see, or changes to what’s done here going forward, you can email the dump at warrenellis@gmail.com. Have a good break. And a fine new year. G’night.

No, seriously, that’s what Red Dog Saloon in Hoxton calls this. Best burger I’ve had in ages, too. Lunch with Jones and Schulze of BERG. Also there was beer. Winterval begins.

(now having coffee in Carnaby Street. Bloody Xmas shopping.)

Blue Verbal Data Feed

December 7th, 2011 | photography

Someone emailed me this a little while ago.  I have no idea what this is.  It may just be one of those weird bits of ephemera that I’ve somehow missed, but…

This page contained an embedded video. Click here to view it.

The YouTube page says, in part:

This inexplicable 10-inch record from 1969 is one of the strangest and most obscure private pressings you could ever hope to find. It contains a 24-minute psychedelic message from the distant future, presented with intermittent bursts of electronic music, feedback and ambient noise.

This recording is an "unauthorized experiment" that was made in the year 2058 C.D.S. (Carbon Dating System), a "blue verbal data feed" sent backwards in time to "retro A.D." by Decker, T. L., index J-3, CMR 00965 of T-Group Roaring Vectors 252, a human cyborg who suffers from a malfunctioning number nine electrode in his head which causes him to have an emotional breakdown as he records this message. It’s a secret message to a past world he has trouble imagining, a retro world of foreign substances like metal, plastic, animals, soldiers… a world all "physical and slow," "all mechanical and disunified, before major coordinations."

An 8½" 20RPM disc containing this recording was found on the elevator at 205 W. 57th Street in New York City on February 11, 1969 by the composer Clark Gesner…

One would presume that Gesner, probably best known for a stage musical based on Peanuts but also having written comedy for NBC’S Experiment In Television, is in fact the originator of the work.  If anyone knows any more about this, I’m @warrenellis on the twitters.

Niki re-homes ex-battery hens. This one was thrown out of the factory this morning. If she makes it through the night, then, all other things being equal, she might last eighteen months. If she can regrow enough feathers to make it through the winter.

The daily Reuters news galleries – all these images are from Reuters photographers and all rights reside with them and Reuters – are always an unsettling window on the world.  Here’s a selection from today’s spreads, without attribution or explanation.

Planet Pulp

September 2nd, 2011 | photography

I find several Favourite New Things a week.  This is the joy of living in 2011: a new Leyland Kirby album lands in my email inbox, brilliant photographers make new images and post them in my social streams, dozens of people mock Jamie McKelvie on Twitter and there’s even a hashtag for it.

And then there is PLANET PULP, which does terrible things to all my most atavistic and shameful bits.  How I love this thing.
