Oldest African-American sorority to gather in Richmond for legislative events
The Virginia Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., under AKA Connection, the organization’s civic and social action committee, will hold their annual Legislative Weekend Feb. 19-20 in Richmond, under the theme “Empowering Virginia - Going From Discussion to Action!â€
Â
Events will officially kick off with a town hall meeting at Coburn Hall on the campus of Virginia Union University on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 5-7 p.m. Moderated by political commentator and author Sophia Nelson, the town hall meeting will focus on “Economic Security 2012: Education and Jobs in Virginia.â€Â A dynamic panel representing members of the Virginia General Assembly, the state’s community college system, and civic and advocacy organizations will present information and dialogue with attendees on these key issues impacting the lives of citizens of the commonwealth. The event is free and open to the public.
Â
Sorority members and guests will reconvene on Monday morning, Feb. 20 at 8 a.m. for a legislative breakfast under the direction of Dr. Linda H. Gilliam, Mid-Atlantic regional director. Virginia legislators and Gov. Bob McDonnell have been invited to discuss the sorority’s other key areas of focus this year: restoration of rights, health care, Medicare/Medicaid, and voter protections. Following the breakfast, members will meet with legislators; visit both chambers of the house and sit in on key committee meetings.
