Retro Feature: Bomberkids 1.0
Posted by Ryan on 14 February 2012, 16:09 GMT

As news editor, I would be remiss if I did not right the wrongs of history. All of the wrongs. Naturally, an important question to ask is "Where does one start?" Thankfully, the origin of our journey is rather easy to triangulate. What with it being Valentine's Day and all, I will start with one of my greatest loves.

Speaking of love, everyone loves Bomberman games. This has been repeatedly established as an inherent truth, one that maintains order throughout the universe. That being the case, one can imagine the degree of beguilement attributed to the absence of official recognition of Bomberkids 1.0 by Julien Solignac.

Bomberkids is essentially a multiplayer-only game, allowing for two players locally and up to four players with a link and two calcs. Featuring power-ups, competitive play, and linkplay of a quality that was far ahead of its time, I could rant about this title for paragraphs. Rather than gush, I think it is far more appropriate to let the words of the community do the software justice:

"Download this awesome game today before you waste your lifetime without the best multiplayer game ever written." - Joseph Roth "Bomberkids is amazing!" - moses moses "...this is without any doubt the best multiplayer game for the TI-83+." - N G "The truly most greatest mutliplayer game out there! 10/10" -- nick bugaev "Bomberkids is an awesome game that deserves to be counted among the best assembly games out there..." - Hans Jorgensen

In the years past, there have been many absolutely outstanding Bomberman games that have been featured; Bomberkids may now be counted among them. So get together some friends, link up those calcs, and get blastin'!

Excitement Is "jsTIfied"
Posted by Ryan on 13 February 2012, 03:52 GMT

This one is hitting the news desk a bit late but is nonetheless worthy of some serious attention. Firstly, everyone's favorite international calculator superstar Christopher "Kerm Martian" Mitchell formally announced jsTIfied, a Javascript TI-83+ emulator. Yes, you read that correctly. A Javascript TI-83+ emulator. Unbeknownst to Kerm, this announcement was made on everyone's favorite ticalc.org news editor's birthday, making it sure to become known as one of the greatest events in the history of the world.

Not content to simply stir up giddiness in the hearts of the masses, Kerm delivered on his promise (as always!) and has granted access to his work in the form of a public beta. jsTIfied is an exhibition of very thoughtful project planning wedded to meticulous implementation. With tweaks and additional features on the burner, jsTIfied is a very welcome addition to the body of emulation software that so many dedicated coders have toiled to develop.

A lot of us in calc community have been waiting with baited breath for months now as Ndless v3.1 beta has loomed around the corner. After much speculation about the release date, a huge (largely) synchronized release was planned for this, and our archives are now in possessorship of this outstanding release. The official statement that we received from Oliver "ExtendeD" Armand is quoted below, with a link added:

An ASMDREAM Come True
Posted by Ryan on 4 January 2012, 20:08 GMT

There are an awfully large number of us who spend such a great amount of time using our calcs that it becomes more natural to program on-calc than anywhere else. For those of us with this affliction, this bit of news is all the more exciting. This week, Benjamin "the_mad_joob" Mahdjouba has realized an early but functional version of my childhood dream, an on-calc assembler for the TI-8X+ series, appropriately named ASMDREAM. Furthermore, it appears to be Benjamin's first ticalc.org release!

ASMDREAM is incredibly feature-rich, especially for an early build of the software, and will leave programmers swooning at the mere whisper of the name "mad joob". The assembler is capable of reading source in both RAM and archive, handle macros, errors, and nesting, and, well, just take a look for yourself! The author has also included very nice documentation on the usage and syntax adoptions, as well as the limitations, that programmers should keep in mind, making this a very strong release indeed. A big tip of the hat goes to everyone involved in this project.
