Tourmaline Beautiful Stones
October 31st, 2010When it comes to the reinforcement of one's beauty, nothing says it better than jewelry. This has guided  the direction and development of different shapes, sizes, colors as well as durability. One of the most reputable stones in the world today are the tourmaline jewelry. This comes in a varied selection of natural colors that range from pink to red, green, yellow, clear, black and then some. One of the most valuable is the blue tourmaline. This has the highest quality with hardness of about 7.5.
The tourmaline, used in the making of the tourmaline jewelry is found in parts of Africa, Madagascar, Brazil, Mexico, USA and Myanmar. Brazil has the greatest scope ,with almost all the colors of  tourmaline. California is best known for the production of pink tourmaline. On the other hand, Maine is known for the sherbet-colored as well as mint green tourmalines.
In their natural state, the tourmaline does not appear as single minerals; they are found in groups of related minerals in terms of physical and chemical properties. One of the minerals in the group is the Elbaite. It is the only mineral manufactured into gem and used in jewelry. Other major minerals include the dravite (Brownish in color), schori (dark and seldom used as gem) and Liddicoatite (rare and beginning to be found in jewelry boxes).
During its manufacturing, the tourmaline is made into long rectangle shapes. This is due to their natural occurrence as thin as pencil crystals, which are long. However, in spite of their being quite thin, they are hard materials ranging at 7 to 7.5 in hardness when placed on the Mohs scale. Their traces are also present in the ingenious rocks such as granite and the granite pegmatite. Metaphoric rocks such as marble also contain the tourmaline. Smaller traces can be found in the sandstones and conglomerate rocks.
When it comes to myths, some communities believe that the pink tourmaline has the ability to promote female protection as well as balance. The green one on the other hand is known to promoted male balance and is thought beneficial in the building of endurance in sports. All the colors of the tourmaline are known to protect the wearer from misfortunes and dangers according to the legend. This believes has compelled to the gaining of much popularity of this gem.
Everything on this world is subject to damage. This means that in spite of the tourmaline jewelry being hard, they can be damaged. Quartz is just a few points behind this, which means when exposed to it; the Quartz can embed scratches on the expensive tourmaline jewelry. The jewelry should therefore never be kept close to this property. Moreover, they should never be cleaned in ultrasonic or even steam cleaner. This will lead to their damage. The most recommended cleaner is the ionic cleaners and warm and soapy water. A soft brush should also be used on the tourmaline jewelry. Other than jewelry, the tourmaline is used by scientist to make polarized magnets. Its electrical charge can change when heated.
