MOZAMBIQUE: the ultimate island destination...

A couple of years ago we made our first foray into Mozambique and we absolutely loved it. Our destination was the Quirmibas Archipelago, a chain of 32 tiny coral islands. This was – and still is – an unexplored and delightfully remote scuba diving destination. Yet it also hosts one of the most memorable island resorts we have ever stayed on.

We're not the only ones who think that way either –  Frommers recently included the Quirmibas Archipelago in its top 10 island destinations. We stayed on Medjumbe Private Island, which will always rank way up at the top of our personal favourites with it's mix of casual atmosphere, exquisite food, stylish beach bungalows and a whole range of unexplored reefs to discover.

There has been good news recently on conservation efforts for endangered sharks, manta rays and the marine realm in general. Don't forget to keep signing petitions. It does work as proven by success stories such as Peninsula Hotels in Hong Kong and Shangri-La Asia Ltd. banning shark fin from their hotel restaurants. Manta rays are now listed as 'vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List after reassessment in 2011 and The Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals obligates member countries to provide protection for giant mantas and their key habitats.
