Shocker! Samsung licenses Windows Phone 7

Okay, two crazy bits of news here: first off, it seems Samsung intends to start making cellphones. Second, some of them will be running Windows Phone 7! Insane, right? Okay, we kid, but Sammy is just now getting official with the news that it has licensed Microsoft's upcoming mobile platform for its own purposes, and that the company "plans to launch several models based on Windows Phone 7 this year in the US, Europe and Asia." Of course, one of the most prominent WinPho 7 prototypes Microsoft has been trotting around this year has been a Samsung loosely based on the i8910 HD, so this should come as... well, absolutely no surprise whatsoever. Follow the break for the full press release.

Toshiba AC100 hacked to run Ubuntu 10.10 RC

Canonical just launched Ubuntu 10.10 RC. Chippy from CarryPad happens to have an NVIDIA Tegra 2 powered Toshiba AC100 smartbook at the moment. See where this is going yet?

While the AC100 ships with Google’s Android operating system, the hardware can support other operating systems as well — just not Windows, which isn’t designed to run on ARM-based chips. So Chippy decided to see if he could figure out how to install Ubuntu 10.10 on the smartbook, and long story short, it almost works.

Chippy was able to get to the boot screen, but no further. But the folks who put together a custom Ubuntu image for the Toshiba AC100 reports that if you can get the system to boot, most things should be working. There’s no sound driver yet, and the touchpad may have some issues. But it sounds like that’s about it for the known issues at this point.

Of course, Ubuntu 10.10 won’t officially be launched until next week, so we’re still in the early days of AC100/Ubuntu 10.10 hacking. I suspect things will only get better and easier from here on out.

Gateway gives its ZX One multitouch all-in-ones a new look and some new specs

Having trouble finding an all-in-one PC that fits you? We have no idea why, they're everywhere these days, but just in case you're still striking out you might want to check out Gateway's new ZX One series refresh. The desktops have a fresh little curved look to them, with prices starting at $900 for a 21.5-inch machine (ZX4951) with a 2.8GHz Pentium G6950 processor, while a 23-inch number (ZX6951) with a 3.2GHz Core i3-550 processor is a mere $100 more. If those prices sound steep to you for machines with Intel HD integrated graphics, you should know that multitouch screens and Blu-ray come standard in this lineup. Both computers are available now online and at retail.

Logitech to unveil its Google TV lineup October 6th

Sorry, Sony. Logitech's looking to beat you to the Google TV punch by hosting is own event on October 6th, just six days before yours. (Then again, Sony's contribution also made a cameo earlier this week at a Best Buy event, but we digress.) The event's invite is vague on the "line of products" (note: plural) it'll be showing, but we'd venture a guess that Revue has already RSVPd and been promised some stage time. With any luck, the Lonely TV will MC the proceedings -- hey, we can dream.

Malata T9000 Chinese Smartbook visits the US

Chinese PC maker Malta is showing off a smartbook called the T9000. It’s available for purchase in China, but this week the folks at Netbook News got a chance to check one out in person in the US. Just don’t bank on it ever going up for sale in the states,

The tablet uses a Marvell Armada 166 ARM-based chip and has 8GB of storage space. The 10 inch display has a 1024 x 600 pixel screen resolution. The device runs a version of Linux.

In a video overview, Sascha from Netbook News suggests that the case looks similar to an Asus Eee PC netbook, but the keyboard looks more like something I would expect from an HP netbook. The port arrangement is also rather unusual, with USB amd micro USB ports, a SIM card slot in the side of the case. The Malata T9000 has a 3 cell, 15Whr battery.

You can check out the video after the break.
