November ’11 Mobile Monday Sydney – “Mobilising Christmas”

Mobilising Christmas

Monday 7th November 2011

Imagine this, you’re a guy who gets dragged to every shopping expedition by your partner whether you like it or not.  Christmas is your most dreaded holiday because not only do you have to manoeuvre the crowds, you’re also expected to do the heavy lifting: the shopping bags, gift boxes, wine bottles, etc.  Now what if there’s a mobile app that can convert you from a Shopping Slave to The Navigator?

You’re a woman on a mission to find the best holiday buy you can find. There’s so much to buy but so little time!  What if there’s an app on your mobile that can tell you how far away you are from the shop that contains the item you desire?

Streethawk

Joins us this Monday as Natasha Rawlings and David Jones (not the retail store), demonstrates StreetHawk – a Platform for hyper-local retail promotions. StreetHawk is a smartphone app that ALERTS shoppers of products they seek, on the streets around them, and the locations they frequently shop.

Christmas is the time of the year when your organisational skills are tested and stretched to the hilt.  Amidst all the revelry, preparing a feast for the entire family can be most daunting.  With 101 things to remember, imagine what a catastrophe it would be if you serve your best turkey ever and yet forgot to get the gravy…. you ruined Christmas!

How Woolworths is helping customers save time and money usingmobile technology.

Has Fakira, Program Manager for Innovations of Woolworths will walk us through the Woolworths app for iPhone and Android and how it has transformed the lives (and memories!) of grocery shoppers Australia-wide.  Now, you will never forget to buy those olives ever again!

Has Fakira leads the Sell Innovation Program at Woolworths Ltd and is responsible fortechnology innovations for retail operations. He has over 20 years experiencein the retail technology arena both in Australia and the UK. Has started hiscareer as a software developer and has progressed to technology managementroles. In his more recent positions he has bridged the gap between business andtechnology teams to identify and deliver initiatives that drive business value. One highlight was the introduction and rollout of self-serve checkouts intoWoolworths Supermarkets which are now used by over 40% of Woolworths’customers. More recently, Has’ team has delivered the new Woolworths Appfor iPhone and Android, which has attracted an overwhelming response fromcustomers with over 1.1m downloads to date.

After Monday’s session, I can almost hear Santa Claus going:  Mo! Mo! Mo!

Mobile Monday Sydney, August 2011 – “Commercialising the Apps”

Monday 1st August – 7pm start

“Commercialising the Apps”

You’re riding home from work after a very hectic day.  While the bus/train lulls you to a state of semi-consciousness, you’re zapped and jolted to sudden alertness – you just had a light bulb moment!  An idea, nay, a cutting-edge idea for a mobile app starts to germinate in your head.  By the time you step inside your door, you’ve built the functionalities in your mind and already doing user testing in your head. You can see the graphics in your mind’s eye.  You can mentally see the download counter and have started counting how much $$$ will land in your bank account. Hang on! Let’s back track….how much ARE you getting for this app?  How much are you charging? Must it really be a paid app?  if you don’t charge for it, where do you then find the revenue from this entire exercise?  Hmmmmm…..

When it comes to commercializing mobile apps, how mobile is the price of apps?

Mark Dando, Director for Mobile Market Development at Fairfax Digital will come down from the ski slopes to discuss this on Monday.

So now you have this golden idea for a mobile app.  You created, developed, tested, poked and stretched your app until it’s the shape and form you want it to be (not that it’s tangible, mind you).  You publish it and wait.  “Build it and they will come!” – you thought (in reference to Field of Dreams the movie, of course).  So you waited and waited and waited…..but in the digital space where you’re one of tens of thousands of apps – in the AppStore, AppWorld, AppBrain, Android Market, etc., etc. – how do you get your app its 15 minutes of fame?  How do you get heard in this vast mobile jungle?

When it comes to commercializing mobile apps, how do you become commercial?

TigerSpike’s Client Services Director, Tamzin Taylor, will razzle-dazzle us with secrets of successful mobile marketers.

You’ve finally launched your mobile app – bravo!  Traffic has started to trickle in slowly but surely.  Inevitably, you find yourself with a database of mobile numbers, and maybe even additional data that will allow you to do customer profiling or market segmentation.  The question now is: what can you LEGALLY do with these? Can you send a broadbast to up-sell (was there an opt-in there somewhere?  But they bought it so that was inferred consent, right??)  Can you send them special offers (is it still spam even if I offer them something for free?).  Can I even release the latest version with subliminal advertising (will I be accused of indirectly “selling” my database to 3rd party advertisers?)

When it comes to commercializing mobile apps, what is legally apt?

Patrick Fair, Partner and Owner of Baker & McKenzie will sagaciously shed some light on these legal conundrums.
