Degenstein, Keith William (Digger)

Keith William Degenstein, beloved husband of Debbie Degenstein, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, February 25, 2007 at the age of 57 years.

He is survived by his loving wife Debbie; daughter Kimberley; son Michael; and canine companion Dakota. Besides his family, Keith leaves his father Peter and his wife Shirley; his sisters, Karen and her daughter Robyn, Candace and her son Jansen; and his brother Peter (Chip) and his wife Lisa and their daughters, Jessica, Nicole, and Ruth Degenstein. Deb’s family also held a special place in his heart and he will be missed by her parents, Shirley and Rick Wigeland; sisters, Robin (Les), Shelley (Leo); brothers, Erik (Linda) and Gregg (Christine); nieces and nephews, Julie, Stephen, Caitlyn, Toni, Jayme, Jeffery, and Erika; and many, many special relatives and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his mother Regina Mae Anderson.

McManus, Beryl

Beryl McManus, beloved wife of Patrick, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at the age of 76 years.

Beryl was born on August 13, 1930 in Nottingham, England. She joined Patrick in Canada when she was 19 years old and they were married October 21, 1950. Beryl loved traveling with Patrick, listening to music, reading, and doing the daily crossword. She was a loving wife and mother and had a great sense of humour.

Besides her husband Patrick, Beryl is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Chris and Barb McManus of Calgary, AB; her daughter and son-in-law Sheila McManus-Oshanek and Barry Oshanek, of Cranbrook, BC; and two grandchildren Sean and Laura McManus. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Chris and Eileen Bancroft, of North Hampton, England; as well as several cousins in England. Beryl was predeceased by her Parents David and Ivy Bancroft.

The family would like to thank the people who made so many meaningful contributions along the difficult path of the last two years. The nurses in the Rockyview and Foothills Hospitals, and the Carewest Sarcee Hospice were knowledgeable and caring beyond belief. The paramedics whom we have seen so often were always gentle and respectful. The family is also grateful to Beryl’s friends who were so helpful and kind.

It was Beryl’s wish that there be no funeral, however, friends of the family are invited to meet at Chris and Barb’s on Saturday, March 3, 2007 between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. to celebrate her life. Please call 239-1765.

Michael (Mike) Powers MacGregor of Calgary passed away on Monday February 26, 2007, at the age of 66 years.

Mike was born on February 7, 1941, in Calgary. He was employed at the Calgary General Hospital for thirty-five years from where he retired as an orthotic technician. Mike enjoyed fishing, camping and reading.

He is survived by his son Michael MacGregor of Saskatoon; son and daughter-in-law Darcy and Lori MacGregor of Calgary; and his five grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Patricia MacGregor. He was predeceased by his wife Darlene in 1998 and his sister Robbie MacGregor.

Nancy Laurie Hamilton, of Calgary passed away on Sunday February 25, 2007, at the age of 50 years.

Nancy was born in High River, AB, on September 9, 1956. She lived in many wonderful places. She was a healthcare worker for many years and was very involved with the H.E.U. Union and stood for her beliefs and rights. Her greatest achievement and source of pride were her four children. Camping trips were always an adventure with Nancy. She had a warm heart, she loved and cared for everyone she met and she always had welcoming arms and home.

Nancy will be lovingly remembered by her life partner William Milward; son Colin Phillip Hamilton; daughter Tannis Laurie Hamilton; daughter Chelsey Grace Rose Friedenstab; daughter Cassandra Lynn Marie Friedenstab and son-n-law Donald Zachery Motz; and her four grandchildren. She will also be very much missed by her mother Grace White; sister and brother-in-law Terry Lynn and Frank Ovington; brother and sister-in-law Mike and Virginia White; as well as many nieces and nephews. Nancy was predeceased by her father Clarence Lloyd White and her brother Rick White.

Chapman, William Louis

William (Bill) Louis Chapman Sr., beloved husband of Doreen, of Calgary, formerly of Longlac, ON passed away on Friday, February 23, 2007 at the age of 84 years.

Bill was born on February 26, 1922 in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), ON. At the age of 19 he moved to Longlac, ON where he worked for Kimberly Clark Pulp and Paper (formerly Longlac Pulp Wood Supply) before becoming a member of the R.C.A.F. from 1943 to 1945 during WWII. Bill returned to Longlac in 1945 where he was reunited with his long time friend Doreen and they were married on March 21, 1953. He resumed his work with Kimberly Clark Pulp and Paper for forty-six years before retiring as the head of the scaling department at the age of 65 years. Bill served as Chairman of the School Board and Trustee in the Township of Greenstone Region for seven years. He came to Calgary in the fall of 2004 to be closer to his family. In his earlier years Bill loved to go hunting, and fishing and he especially enjoyed to sit by the lake and enjoy the quiet times with family and friends. He was a very supportive husband, father and grandfather.

Besides his loving wife Doreen, Bill is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, William and Cecilia, of Edmonton, AB, and their children Theresa, Malachi, Reuben, Willow and Joshua, Tom and Bettywyn, of Calgary, AB, and their children Anne-Marie, and Christine, and David and Audrey, of Montreal, QC. He is also survived by a brother-in-law Dr. Burt Sellick and his wife Fin, of Thunder Bay, ON; as well as several nieces and nephews throughout the world. Bill was predeceased by his brother John and sister Helene.

Bartel, Gerhard Cornelius

Bartel, Gerhard Cornelius went peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Saviour on Monday, February 26, 2007 at the age of 77 years.

He is lovingly remembered and was cared for by his wife of five and one half years, Lil (nee Lane); his two sons and their families JD and Tammy Bartel, Somerlea, and Jessalayne, Elli-Rose (in heaven); Wilf and Carol Bartel, Christalea, Candice and Bethany; and his two daughters and their families, Barb and Phil Heidebrecht, Alex, Ethan and Mikaela; Sheryl and Gerald Grasmeyer, Lauren, Micah and Reuben. Also the children and grandchildren he welcomed through his marriage to Lil, Lisa and Grant Weir, Melissa and Christopher; Christopher and Evette Graham, Kristen, James and Rachel. Gerhard is also survived by his two sisters, Elsbeth (Rudy) Janssen, Irmgard (Manfred) Claassen, two brothers Paul (Hedy) Bartel, and Siegfried (Delores) Bartel; three sister-in-laws, Ilse Bartel, Magda Bartel and Heidi Bartel; and numerous extended family. Those who went before him were his parents Otto and Marie (nee Cornelsen) Bartel, his first wife Margaret (nee Penner), their infant son Garry, and his siblings, three sisters and six brothers.

Gerhard was born on December 28, 1929 in Grunau, West Prussia and immigrated to Canada with many of his family in 1952 after their displacement during WWII. Life experiences and his faith in God are what shaped him to be the man he was. He left a legacy to us all of how to give what we have been given, and through all things to give God the glory, honour and praise. We, as a family, would like to thank the nurses and doctors on Unit 81 at the Foothills Medical Centre for their care.

Robert (Bob) Beaver beloved husband of Marion Beaver (nee Kijewski) passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at the age of 73 years.

Bob was born in Montreal, QC on January 6, 1934 to Stella Splude and Sydney Beaver.

Beloved husband of fifty-three years to Marion, Bob was also a loving father to his sons, Terry (Pam), Bob (Gwen Newell), and Tim Beaver and daughter Cheryl (Andrew) Hookey. Grampa (our hero) will be greatly missed by his granddaughters, Lisa Straus, Rachel Ott and Tanis Beaver and by his grandsons, Luke and Ben Desnoyers, David Straus, Devin Ott and Bobby, Quinn and Wyatt Beaver. Also left to cherish Bob’s memory are his sisters, Stella, Joan, Vicky and Darlene, as well as other beloved family and many friends from his service in the R.C.E.M.E and as a Detective with the Calgary City Police. Bob was predeceased by both his parents, and by his brothers, Jack and Bill.
