5:00 p.m. Feb. 18, 2012NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- United Parcel Service Inc. has made an unsolicited bid for Dutch package shipper TNT Express NV for $6.4 billion, according to a Wall Street Journal report Saturday. TNT rejected the UPS bid of 9 euros, or $11.82, a share, made on Feb. 11, though talks are ongoing, the newspaper said. Both UPS and rival U.S. shipper FedEx Corp. have sought the company to gain a bigger presence in Europe. Speculation about interest in TNT by UPS and FedEx has been ongoing, but talks weren't previously confirmed. People described as familiar with the matter told the Journal it's too soon to say what FedEx will do.
