Ian Kallen's Summary
A system, internet and software technologist since 1994 (internet user since 1989). Developed management portals (enterprise software) and large, scalable web services for online infrastructure and content. Not a single one of my former gigs have ceased operation, they are all ongoing concerns. I'm an agile and inventive technologist with a rich background in application and system design, architecture and project leadership. Focused on the big picture while tending to the details in tenacious pursuit of success. I prefer metrics focused and test driven practices that fail fast or succeed large.
Specialties
Web application development leadership and coding with agile development practices (XP, scrum, test-driven, etc). Technical highlights include crawling, search, workflow and analytics platforms using languages and frameworks such as ruby, rails, python, django, Solr/Lucene,, Hadoop, MySQL, memcached, messaging (kestrel, spread, JMS), PostgreSQL, SOAP, J2EE, struts/tiles/taglibs, Spring Framework, Perl, PHP, Oracle and a range of other technologies.

Senior Systems and Software Architect
Technorati
Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Internet industry
April 2004 – March 2009 (5 years)
Led efforts infrastructure stabilization, growth, architectural planning, project planning, vision articulation and software development.
Performed system analysis and design of an evolving and rapidly scaling infrastructure characterized by high write and query rates. Architectural and code refactoring for continuous system improvement. Introduced caching (memcached), messaging (spread) and asynchrony (queues/workers) to create smoother scaling applications.
Built statistics frameworks for content analysis, content archiving and query frameworks, localizable web interfaces, service oriented architecture (RESTful, later used thrift) and fraud ("web spam") detection systems.
Led team to rewrite of the data acquisition pipeline resulting better data quality, better operational visibility and easier feature extensions in the ping handling, crawling, parsing, persisting and indexing of web data. Used unit testing and continuous integration to create a development culture of quality and accountability. Another outcome of the rewrite: an order of magnitude reduction in the number of machines required to persist crawl information.

Ian Kallen's Education
San Francisco State University
BA, Special Major - Arms Control and Cold War Studies
1983 – 1991
Probably took too many art and music classes in college. Started majors in computer science and physics but grew disinterested in where those were going. Finally focused on international relations with a special interest in arms control verification technologies; all told, accumulated 160 graduate and undergraduate units. Also, DJ'd at University of San Francisco's radio station, KUSF from 1982 to 1984. Yep, 'twas an eclectic ride! During this time, also worked as a turn-around manager for pizza joints around the San Francisco bay area.
Activities and Societies: Dean's List, Authored online guide "Post-Soviet Study Resources on the Internet" (1991)
