View Your Mind

This page was exported directly from vym. It shows some of the features vym offers to collect and present ideas and data. Editing the content of the page in vym is really easy and intuitive, just grab something with the mouse and move it to another place.

Usually you will work with two windows:

Mainwindow shows the map as seen in the image above Noteeditor which is used to edit larger text like this one (and the others) in grey boxes here. The noteeditor always shows the content of the branch selected in the mainwindow.

vym is not another drawing tool, it is a thinking tool. It is also a planning tool. Maybe some kind of database, too. The idea is to use it dynamically, just change the map when your thoughts change. The possibility to export the content e.g. to a website as seen here, was added recently. Another new export filter allows to easily create a presentation in Open Office.

Enjoy vym!

What is vym

VYM (View Your Mind) is a tool to generate and manipulate maps which show your thoughts. Such maps can help you to improve your creativity and effectivity. You can use them for time management, to organize tasks, to get an overview over complex contexts, to sort your ideas etc.

Maps can be drawn by hand on paper or a flip chart and help to structure your thoughs. While a tree like structure like shown on this page can be drawn by hand or any drawing software vym offers much more features to work with such maps.

vym is not another drawing software, but a tool to store and modify information in an intuitive way. For example you can reorder parts of the map by pressing a key or add various information like a complete email by a simple mouse click.

Why use vym

A map can concentrate a very complex content on little space e.g. a piece of paper. It helps to use both sides of your brain: the logical side and also your creative side (e.g. by using pictures, colors and keywords in a map, so called anchors). It is a technique to organize the way you think: It can help you by developing, sorting and memorizing your thoughts.

Because you just use keywords and drawings, it is much faster than good old fashioned notes. Your brain memorizes things by associating them to other things -- a map makes use of those connections and stimulates new asccociations.

vym is designed to make changes in the map very easy: e.g. if you use it for time management, just move a task to another place or recolor it by a simple mouse click in order to assign it to another day in the week or to give it a new priority.

There are lots of webpages (see e.g. the Wikepedia links below) and also books out there, providing lots of information on working with maps.

Hi Uwe,

we started to use VYM in Trolltech and are very happy with it. Great application indeed.

James Mohr

Recently someone visited my site and pointed out "View Your Mind" to me. I must say that I am very impressed. Granted it lacks many of the features of [..] and I need to get used to how it does things. However, I personally don't use most of these features and I think that VYM has the potential to replace [..] on my desktop.

You done a terrific job!!!

I'm a teacher from germany and im using vym. It rocks. Gratualtions to this very nice Programm. I changed from MS Windows to SuSE Linux. With Windows ive used the [..] from [..]. A very powerfull Programm with many things nobody needs.

How do we say in Germany:

Very nice, indeed. Makes me wish I had a Linux distro on my machine to use it; fits my thought exactly to what I need. I've got more thoughts than todo-lists. :)

Hi Uwe,

benutze Dein Programm fuer S/390 Konfigurationen, ist wirklich sehr
nuetzlich! Tolles Tool :)

Respekt!

Roadmap

As I get more and more feature requests I want to say a few words on what's coming next. The points listed here show he upcoming bigger changes I'd like to make. Much more things I have got on my mind can be found in the file todo.vym distributed together with vym.

Feel free to contact me, if you want to help here.

user defined flags vym on Windows

This is technically possible, I just changed the vym license a bit to allow linking against the windows version of QT. As I don't have access to QT for Windows, I depend on users to compile a Windows version.

Please also have a look at the vym FAQ.

This works since version 1.5.0

vym is released under the GPL. In 1.5.0 an exception to the GPL was added to admit linking against non-GPL libraries. This is needed to make vym available on Windows systems.

Alternatives to vym

There are some free software projects, but not many I could recommend one at the moment for using maps.

Of course there are also commercial applications, but hey, I make my living with open source software ;-)

[image]Download

From now on (May 2005) new versions will be available on the vym project site at SourceForge. I am going to build binary packages for the latest versions of SuSE Linux and Mac OS X; apart from those there will be of course the sources and the documentation.

[image]openSUSE

You can find the latest downloads and even betas for future versions at the download section of opensuse.org

[image]Easy testing in susestudio [image]Ubuntu

The very latest version you can always get thelatest version directly from openSUSE BuildService, please check the URL above

(or here: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home%3A//insilmaril/)

If you prefer the older "original" Ubuntu packages, you can

apt-get install vym

There is also a Kubuntu link:

http://packages.debian.org/unstable/kde/vym

other LINUX & Co
Debian

Debian packages can be created with "alien" from the rpms. (apt-get install alien)

Use

alien -d vym-<version>.rpm

to generate

vym_<version>.deb

During convertsion the pdf file gets compressed with gzip. To read the documentation it is needed to

gunzip /usr/share/doc/packages/vym/doc/vym.pdf.gz

Now it can be read with

Help ->Open VYM Documentation (pdf).

Mandriva

Users told that the SUSE rpm can also be installed on Mandriva. This can be done with "urpmi vym"

Fedora Core

The SuSE rpms can also be installed on Fedora Core.

[image]FreeBSD

Gerrit Beine ported vym to FreeBSD in November 2004. Thanks, Gerrit!

Gentoo

I got feedback that vym also runs on Gentoo, it meanwhile is in Gentoo official repository, so anyone can install it with:

emerge vym

Ark Linux

Bernhard Rosenkraenzer added vym to Ark Linux, it can be installed with

apt-get install vym

[image]Arch Linux

The command to install the package is:

pacman -Sy vym

Package details can be found here:

http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?q=vym

Compiling the sources

To compile and install vym from the sources:

download the sources need to have QT4.7 (or newer) from Nokia run qmake run make run vym

For details check the FAQ page:

http://www.insilmaril.de/vym/faq.html

[image]Windows

Thomas Kriener started to port vym to windows, have a look at his homepage.

Sandia Labs did a complete port to windows, but didn't release their sources so far. A clear GPL infringement :-(

Currently there is no functional and recent Windows version, sorry.

Mac OS X

Any sponsoring with Mac hardware which I can also use for Logic Pro (see my music page) is welcome ;-)

Currently there is no functional and recent Mac version, sorry.
