The Buzz: As a filmmaking duo, Neveldine/Taylor divide my opinion: their life-risking commitment to creating action is admirably hands-on, but their movies are more F-grade junk that B-level sleaze. Johnny Blaze's first outing was a success and somewhat of an industry shock, so this sequel holds no surprises aside from the fact that it arrives five years later. I'll miss Eva Mendes, though Idris Elba is as sexy and the rest of the cast is peppered with a few people whose appearances should please genre fans.
The Buzz: I don't mind McG's movies; at his worst, he's a likable alternative to Brett Ratner. And the presence of writer Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes) is an indication that, as absent minded as these proceedings might be, there will probably be some sexual attraction between Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, and Tom Hardy. Someone I know and love referred to this romantic comedy as "the conclusion of the 'Reese Witherspoon Has To Pick Between Two Guys' trilogy that started with How Do You Know and Water for Elephants."
The Buzz: Given the recent unfortunate events at Penn State, it will be invigorating to watch this story of three football players facing varying sets of circumstances, all of whom opted to attend Manassas High School under the guidance of coach Bill Courtney -- even though they might have fared "better" elsewhere. I'm rooting for co-director T.J. Martin, whom I know from his short-filmmaking days in Seattle.
The Buzz: We've heard a lot of stories about beloved Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli's future; rumors are circulating about them closing up shop if their movies continue to underperform in the U.S. We're opting to believe that the worldwide appeal of their works will keep them in business, though we do wonder how much longer Hayao Miyazaki, who will be 71 this year, will keep at it (eternally, we hope).
The Buzz: Ten years after Thirteen Conversations About One Thing, the Sprecher sisters return with a Coens-y looking dark comedy brimming with desperation, con artists, and duplicity. Let's just remember that a quiet Sundance premiere doesn't mean the film isn't a winner; I'm just more concerned about the from-out-of-nowhere general release strategy, which seemed to materialize right at the beginning of this year.
The Buzz: Andrew Okpeaha MacLean is a director worth tracking. His debut is a well-crafted insight into the teenage mindset that doesn't sensationalize violence or fetishize a culture previously unseen on film. This is more of a slow-building character drama than a who-done-it.
The Buzz: The American film-blogger scene is obsessed with foreign crime films, and Matthias Schoenaerts's portrayal of a testosterone addicted rancher looks to be one of those performances that will place him on the worldwide radar (evidence: he just filmed Rust & Bone with Marion Cotillard for Jacques Audiard). Ditto for Michael Roskam, who has earned praise for his measured and assured writing and direction. The film's Best Foreign Language Oscar nomination was from out of nowhere; a win could propel them both Schoenaerts and Roskam into the mainstream.
The Buzz: Given the synopsis and knowing that writer-director Markus Schleinzer has cast several of Michael Haneke's films, I'm sure ambiguity reigns here.
The Buzz: Oscar buffs might remember Danis Tanovic's Best Foreign Language win ten years back, when his No Man's Land deservedly topped Amélie, Elling, and others. None of Tanovic's work in the last decade has made inroads here in the U.S., but his latest returns to the war-torn time period of his early success. Too bad the project is cruising under the radar, but word-of-mouth is still the most effective marketing, right?
