After scoring plenty of acclaim (not to mention a well-deserved Emmy) for his performance as Coach Eric Taylor on TV’s Friday Night Lights, Kyle Chandler has seen his career start to hit the next level. And now it would seem Kathryn Bigelow has noticed, since she’s cast him in her new, still-untitled film about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.Chandler will join a cast that already boasts Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Edgar Ramirez and Mark Strong. Yet according to Deadline, the casting for the movie is still shrouded in some secrecy, with no official confirmation on any of the names attached. But then, what do you expect from a movie that features CIA operatives and Navy Seal characters? Still, if it turns out to be accurate, Chandler will be playing an agent.Bigelow’s film, which features Hurt Locker collaborator Mark Boal on script duty, »

McG Set To Make 'Puzzle Palace' His Next Film; Says It Has A 'Die Hard' Tone & Would Be "Designed For A Gosling"
2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »
With the release of "This Means War" coming this weekend, director McG is prepared to try something just a bit different. He's been attached to "Puzzle Palace" since late last year, an action script penned by "Safe House" writer David Guggenheim. Development stalled while Summit merged with Lionsgate, but with everything starting to clear up, he's ready to make this thriller his very next film. “That’s likely my next picture," he said, referring to the thriller, which features a lawyer trapped in One Police Plaza with crooked cops on his tail. "I just spoke with Guggenheim three days ago, he’s doing another pass on the script, and Lionsgate and Summit are sorting everything out." McG claims it's tonally similar to "Die Hard," as the film follows "A kid who has to clear his father’s name by breaking into One Police Plaza in New York, which is the »

Rob Corddry Finds Pain And Gain

Saturday Night Live might once have been an actor-factory, pumping out regular working types and sketch spin-offs, but these days it’s the Daily Show alumni who are truly everywhere in Hollywood. Led by big breadwinner Steve Carell, the likes of Ed Helms, Rob Riggle and others have all been forging healthy careers. And Rob Corddry’s definitely on that list, adding his name to Michael Bay’s low-budget pic Pain And Gain. The film, which Bay is finally getting to make in between massive Transformers sequels, is based on a true story about bodybuilders in Florida who cook up a scheme including kidnapping, extortion and murder.Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Ed Harris are already attached as the leads and now Corddry is locking in a deal to play John Mese a former competitive bodybuilder himself who is Wahlberg’s boss at the gym where he works. Whitney Houston comes home to songs and prayers

Alicia Keys takes the place of Aretha Franklin and many other stars attend, including R Kelly, Kevin Costner and Stevie Wonder
For those of us who had long admired her work, it would have felt rude not to look in on Whitney Houston's funeral, or "Homecoming", as it was dubbed, held at the place where she first sang gospel as a girl – New Hope Baptist church in Newark, New Jersey; although maybe not as rude as allowing the world's cameras into the church, while cordoning off the roads to keep her fans away.
Before the ceremony, the roads were festooned with balloons, flowers and messages, while commentators suddenly stopped babbling about hotel death-baths, the notorious Diane Sawyer interview ("Crack is whack!"), and ex-husbands, and instead started talking more quietly about gold coffins, half-mast flags, and Houston's devastated loved ones, daughter Bobbi Kristina, mother Cissy, cousin, Dionne et al.

I generally don't like to check out extended clips of footage from films ahead of their release. Call me old fashioned but, similar to how I try and avoid cherry picking music singles before listening to the entire album, I like to think of records and movies as complete bodies of work. Of course, I say all of this only to preface breaking my own general rule. I implore you to watch the first 12 minutes of writer/director/actress Brit Marling's Sounds of My Voice. I did, I don't regret a single moment of it, and now I can't wait to check out the entire film as soon as possible. All self-contradiction aside, in this week's "Top 5" installment you'll find Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance interviews with talent like Nicolas Cage, Idris Elba, Johnny Whitworth, and directors Neveldine/Taylor, a recap of our 21 Jump Street set visit, trailers and »

indieWIRE will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 84th Academy Awards, which will be announced live in Los Angeles on February 26, 2012. Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" and Michel Hazanavicius's "The Artist" led the nominations with 11 and 10 mentions, respectively. They were both nominated for best picture, alongside "The Descendants," "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," "The Help," "Midnight in Paris," "Moneyball," "The Tree of Life" and "War Horse." "The Artist" certainly seems like the film to beat at this point, and in general most categoires seem pretty sewn up. For clips of the films nominated in major categories, take a look at Press Play's picks for who should win, or check the links below for predictions in all the feature film categories. The shorts categories will be up soon, so swing back for updates as Oscar night nears.. Best »

Berlinale 2012 Review: 'Anton Corbijn Inside Out' Presents An Impressionist Portrait Of The Artist As A Solitary Man
2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »
Wisely not attempting to go the standard-issue bio doc route with a subject who is clearly anything but standard-issue "Anton Corbijn Inside Out," as the title suggests, instead takes a more impressionistic, intimate approach to the celebrated photographer and filmmaker, and in the process creates a thoughtful film that is as much a homage to the creative process as it is a tribute to a man. Klaartje Quirijns' documentary, which enjoyed its world premiere in Berlin yesterday, sets out its stall early: the first shot, of a reflective Corbijn lying on his living room couch talking in soft-spoken, subtitled Dutch, has about it the feel of a psychologist's session, something acknowledged a little later by the man, playfully. But it means from the beginning we are prepared for a highly subjective stance -- the film feels as though it's less about him than from him, from the 'Inside Out. »

There are some splashy new movies out in theaters this weekend, and yet neither of them are looking capable of tackling the monster hits from last weekend. Early box office numbers from Friday indicate that The Vow and Safe House are looking strong enough to top the box office this weekend, leaving no room for releases like Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance or This Means War to make it to the top. That said, Spirit of Vengeance is at least going pretty well for itself, making $7 million on Friday, which put it in second place for Friday just behind The Vow, which made $7.4 million. This Means War fared much worse as a new release, making just $5.6 million, well under Safe House's $6.5 million. To see how strong the holdovers are, just look at what happened on Valentine's Day, when The Vow brought in a record-breaking $11.6 million from date night couples, »

William Wharton's autobiography describes how his Us army unit killed German prisoners in the second world war
The graphic and often painful memoirs of celebrated American author William Wharton – which include an account of his role in the killing of German prisoners during the second world war – are to be published for the first time in English.
Wharton's first novel, Birdy, was an instant bestseller and was turned into an award-winning film by director Alan Parker. Despite the critical acclaim that greeted subsequent books and a legion of admirers that included the Nobel laureate Doris Lessing, he has been largely out of print in the UK. He died in 2008.
Now his war memoirs are to be published in English for the first time, along with his complete works – eight novels and two non-fiction books. Curiously the memoir, entitled Shrapnel: Tales Not Told, had been quietly published only in Polish, »

Right now Mark Wahlberg and The Rock are set to play the two main roid ragers, with Ed Harris and Rob Corddry also looking at roles in the film. Now one more actor may join, providing the connection to the Transformers universe that everyone has been waiting for.. right? Galaxy Quest's Dean Parisot Looking To Direct Red 2

It's been 13 years since Dean Parisot directed the now-classic comedy Galaxy Quest, and he's yet to turn in a feature film that matched it-- he made the underwhelming 2005 comedy Fun With Dick and Jane, and has done work on a number of hit TV shows, including The Good Wife and Modern Family. But Parisot may be gearing up to make a return to features in a big way. According to Variety, he's in final negotiations to direct Red 2, a sequel to the 2010 surprise hit, an adaptation of a comic book about geriatric spies being put back into action. Right now Red 2 is set for an August 2013 release, which seems like a tight fit, especially given some timing concerns. As Variety points out, Bruce Willis is the only returning cast member with a deal in place, and he's got a busy schedule ahead of him, including shooting Die Hard 5 and promotion »

Paolo and Vittorio Taviani's "Caesar Must Die" surprised as the big winner of the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, taking home the Golden Bear for best film. Many had begged Christian Petzold's "Barbara" or Miguel Gomes' "Tabu" as the likely winner, as both received considerable critical acclaim. Instead, "Caesar" -- a documentary about criminals performing Shakespeare -- was handed the top prize care of a jury led by Mike Leigh. "Mixed reviews out of Berlin and an experimental production method may hold 'Caesar' back from much of a wide release," Eric Kohn wrote in his Indiewire review, "although it has enough unique appeal to make its way to an alternative release or perhaps a solid television deal." The film was picked up for Us release shortly after that review by Adopt Films. The other winners in the main competition were spread out to 6 other films, including both. »

China and the United States have a thorny relationship, the natural byproduct of two countries reluctantly dependent on each other economically, but diametrically opposed in political philosophy. Despite their differences, the two nations are intricately connected, and sometimes, to keep the waters smooth, something has to give. Yesterday, Vice President Joe Biden announced that China would allow a substantial increase in market access for U.S. movies, opening the door for more U.S. exports to the East, and more fair remuneration for American film companies whose films are being shown in China. Sounds like everybody's getting along, right? Not quite. »
