It would be a nice option to be able to select a backlit keyboard for all laptops, as an upgrade option. Not just on selected models, but allow this to be an upgrade option.

It a very nice feature to have on a laptop. It's easy to see the keys and if you're in a dark room, it's very convient to use without turning on the lights or trying to use the lit from the screen to see the keyboard.

The 16:10 screen format is much better suited to business applications than a 16:9 screen. Replacing the option of a   1920x1200 screen with a 1920x 1080 screen is simply a downgrade. Go back to the 16:10 ratios for business laptops.

I've been looking for a smaller sized desktop to make into my media center pc.  Dell had the perfect ones: Zino HD or Studio Hybrid.  At the time they were released, I wasn't in the market for a new PC, however I like the size and style of them and planned toget the updated versions when it was time.  Fast forward to now.

They don't exist.  Not the style, not the type, nothing.

So this is my modern day plee.  Please bring them back...I would happily buy one and I know others will too.

Hi,

the last Idea was deleted a half year before and we have no solution for ower Problems.

We need a Bios Option Automatic for the NVidia Optimus setting. For detect ,,if external Power is connected, use only the NVidia Card and turn Off Optimus".

Why we need this:

1.) If you have connected a Screen via Display Port or DVI, the Screen will not show anything until the Windows Login screen is there (No Bios Options, No Windows errors, No Bluescreens ....)

2.) If the Notebook go to enery save Mode, the Screens will not power on after moving the Mouse or Pressing a Key. You have to turn off and turn on with a waiting time of 10sec between this actions for becoming back a picture on your screens.

In my Point i use 2x 2710 Screens with a Docking station and this situation is not very funny, please impement this funktion in the bios or make the bios Open Source!

Here is the description of the Problems from many Dell Users in the World:

As notebook mobility is becoming more and more important, battery autonomy and NOT available disk space is becoming a major decisive factor.

It would thus be very useful to be able to build a notebook without the standard power guzzling hard drive.

A Solid State Device HD would lower heat generation and lower power consumption.

Alienware lost its soul By Speaker,  Oct 13, 2009

Alienware earned its name by creating fancy cases that made gamers weak in the knees, they offered bleeding edge tech to stuff into those cases.  The cases finally got a remodel and they look great.  Unfortunately under the hood they are just Dell computers that are wired neatly.  If you want your dream machine to have 3 video cards, 6 hard drives, a sound card and a gamer LAN card you can Asus and several other companies have been making mother boards that can do all that for a few years now.  Alienware computers use motherboards that only have 2 PCIe slots and can only handle 4 hard drives, so you can have a video card and sound card or a video card and a Gamer LAN card or 2 video cards. I needed to upgrade my Alienware SLI system (it was 3 years old) I looked at buying another Alienware computer, but they just weren't offering anything that could do what I wanted.  I had to go down to my local computer store, buy a 2 year old motherboard that fit perfectly in my alienware case, but is far more upgradeable & powerful then anything Alienware is offering.  PLEASE DELL GIVE ALIENWARE IT'S SOUL BACK.  oh and what is with the mice and keyboards offered with "top of the line" gamer machines, why the alienware branded items and no high end industry leading stuff?  I want to recommend Alienware to my friends who want to replace there aging systems, please look into building high end machines with things that are useful Microsoft does not make a PC operating system that can use 12 gigs of RAM

I'm specifically talking about Alienware Thermos mugs. Spill proof. It would have the Alienware emblem and the same fit/finish as the black laptop bodies. I'll easily pay $50+ for this mug. Or maybe there is someone on here that can design this?

You could offer other Alienware gear like shirts, hats, flash drives, HDD cases, etc.

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.

Per jeremy_f:

It's been a little over a year since this idea was initially posted, so we wanted to update the community on Dell software options. Our overall software strategy is to continue offering more software choices (including no software) and to provide software we feel benefits our customers' experience with their systems.

upcoming models By mahapatra,  3 days ago

We have seen for long time that xps series of Dell delivers ultimate performance but after inclusion of allienware, they have neglected the gaming aspect of xps lineup(!). Look at Dell xps 15, everything designed for performance ..........latest 2nd gen i7 processor, optional SSD support, amazing FHD display, but look at the gfx card ..........moderate gt 540m which can not handle latest games even at 720p! Same is true for xps 17! gt 555m can not handle games at 1080p! Now when it is time for designing the new models of xps 15, my request to Dell is please include the support of fast GPUs. Idea is that  let the entry level xps have moderate GPUs but include asupport for much faster GPUs for the optional high end customization! good luck!

Do not Integrate the videocards to your motherboards, but use a proprietary module! This case we do not have to change the whole motherboard if the videocard going to dead. We also could replace your cheap Nvidias, ATIs to better watt/performance videocards like to Ati Mobility HD5830 and later to more modern. Thanks!

The texture of the Windows Vista/7 COA below is very papery.

Because of this, the digits of the COA become faded. Hence the product key becomes illegible. This is typically prone for laptops because they have both the COA at the base of the system and because they generate more heat than Desktops. Laptops a few months old can have completely illegible COAs.

User-added image

Compare this with some of the original WIndows XP COA stickers (some which are as old as 2001):
User-added image

These have a plasticy outside texture and are still completely legible.

Aside from aesthetic appeal, the COA is ones right to use Windows, and one may use their product key from the COA with retail media for a clean install of Windows. I have personally can't read my Vista OEM COA, with my WIndows 7 units I put Scotch magic tape ontop of the COA but I shouldn't have to do this.

It is important that the COAs are readible.

Put plasticy or better yet metallic Windows COAs on all new Dell systems.

Considering how much Alienware customers spend on average vs other customers, we should get favorable treatment and access to more experts when it comes to needing customer service and tech help.

I've had to call Alienware tech support once before, and basically, the service was useless.

The techs for Alienware are the same techs that would help Dell customers. I could tell he was reading off of a script and had no clue how to solve a BSOD problem I was having. Even when they involved a supervisor in the Alienware department. They both basically wanted me to just go away. Why would I pay for an extended warranty if this is what I should expect?

I fixed the problem myself.

Rivals of Dell have shown their strength in top multimedia class laptops. Now only strong point of Dell is its audio and display. Now time for some serious upgrades.............

1.Body and Design:
Frankly speaking, design of xps 15 shuld be revised. It is a well tested fact that backside heat ventilation is much better and less annoying than side heat ventilation. Dell has used this back side heat ventilation in Studio class and now in Alienware laptops. What happened in case of xps 15?? Another thing is body should be made of all metal rather than metal and plastic! Dell can also use Metal-Carbon fibre like xps13 ultrabook! body should be much slimmer and of less weight! There should be easy access to RAM and HDD. All ports should be on the sides, not in the backside! And mostly there must be a slot load cd/dvd drive instead of old, annoying trayload system. It would be nice to have an illuminated Dell logo in the lid.

2.Keyboard: Chicklet style is good but there should be no flex in keyboard. Backlit illumination should be for individual keys not as a whole such that no light can escape around the edge of the key! It would be nice if Dell can incorporate the quality and style of Alienware keys in chicklet style and an option to illuminate the individual keys seperately (Future of Alien FX??!!).

3. Storage: option for hybrid Hard drive would be nice.........like 64GB/128GB SSD + 750 GB normal hard drive is best for budget-tight customers!

4. Display: present 1080p display is awesome! May be a IPS panel is only better option! It would be nice if there is a option for three differrent resolution displays.........1366x768, 1600x900 and 1920x1080!

5. Performance: Intel ivy brigde & Nvidia Keplar GPU is must! Option for GDDR5 memory! Graphics card option should be upto high end for gamers! It would be nice if Dell can place an entry level Nvidia GTX series gfx card in xps 15 (28 nm Keplar can minimise the heat, power and size!) Dell! are u listening?? Also Dell can opt for both ATI and Nvidia graphics series like Alienware as ATI card performs better in less price!(ATI-6xxxm series is much better than Nvidia 5xxm series).

6. Connectivity: option for thunderbolt (ivy bridge has inherent support). It would be nice to have an illumination border around every port that can be turned off or on (ideal in dark)!!

Notebooks get carried everywhere. Shouldn't Dell offer an aluminum or otherwise metal casing/construction as an option?

If I am going to drop two grand on a laptop, which I just did, I sure as heck want it as rugged as possible. I don't care about weight or additional cost. I want it to last.

Plastic is brittle. A dent in the metal is better than a crack in the plastic. It's also easier to recycle.

What do you think?

If dell offers an option of quad core i7 sandy bridge processor in XPS 14z and XPS 15z laptops with graphics card option then it will be the MAC book pro killer for sure.compared to Apple pricing dell will definitely have an upper hand.I am for sure that it will increase the XPS sales to the next level

It seems that in time the quality of Dell products has deteriorated all the way. The products are thinner and lighter, have better designs than that of the past however the quality control for them has not surpased the expectation of what you pay for them versus the likes of Apple. It know with Dell and other retail you get what you pay for but it shouldn't be in the literal sense. Even the parts are on backorder for 3 no maybe more of 6 weeks this is the recent case of the N5110 15R laptops. I just hope that Dell would look in Quality Control more rather than shipping without thinking.

The Alienware brand has always been about being the Ferrari of high end gaming systems. However, the mostly locked down BIOS and proprietary motherboards are discouraging to gamers and those who want to do the overclocking themselves. For systems with processors/memory at the "lower" end of the spectrum, keep everything the same. Folks buying those rigs may appreciate more simplicity. But...for those who purchase rigs with an extreme series processor (especially like my 990x), put a board in that I could buy at Fry's. Also, unlock the BIOS! If poeple are willing to spend $4-5k+ on a rig, they most likely do not need Alienware to "protect them from themselves" by limiting editable options.

Or, make non-proprietary and unlocked BIOS a purchase option. There are now many companies who are surpassing Alienware in every way except case design. This is due to a more limited number of customizations consumers can choose from (the price doesn't help, but that is a different topic). Motherboard and BIOS choices can help Alienware remain competitive.

I understand that limiting customization enables mass production and consistent quality standards to a degree. To customize every aspect of these systems is cost-prohibitive. I don't believe a change such as this idea would have a very large impact on costs, but it will definitely have a large positive impact on sales and system viability.
