The Guild Withdraws Support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)

December 24, 2011: When SOPA was first introduced, the idea of stopping online piracy was a good one. Piracy affects the livelihood of many of our members, and so we took a proactive stance for it. However, we are no longer positive about where the bill is headed as it works its way through committee meetings, and feel it may have unintended consequences that may do more harm than good. Simms TabackIn Memoriam: Simms Taback, 1932-2011

On December 25th, the Guild lost a dear friend, colleague, and advocate for graphic artists, Simms Taback. An award-winning illustrator, Simms was a co-founder of the Illustrators Guild, which later merged and became the Graphic Artists Guild of New York. He was instrumental in the Guild going National during the early 1970s. For many years, Simms remained active with the Guild as a writer, editor, and production manager of our book, Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines. Generations of Guild leaders remember Simms fondly as a warm and kind mentor. We miss him greatly.

Attention, Illustrators & Designers: Do you have money coming to you?
Check with Authors Coalition of America

Authors Coalition of America, LLC  (“ACAâ€), has identified a number of American illustrators and designers who may be due royalty payments from non-U.S. sources. These royalties have been received to compensate authors for the foreign reprographic use of U.S. copyrighted materials. Please visit the ACA website and click on the Individual Author Distributions link to learn more about the program and find if ACA is looking for you. ACA was founded in 1994 and today is a coalition of 22 American Author Member Organizations. ACA is an Associate Member of the International Federation of Reprographic Rights Organizations. The Graphic Artists Guild has been a member of ACA since 2002.

Guild members: Please note that the Guild has submitted our member roster to the Authors Coalition for them to review and identify artists which money owed. We do encourage members to check for their names on the Authors Coalition website individually as well.
