Free Online Speed Reading Test

Welcome to our site, home of the best free online speed reading test available on the internet. Unlike most of the other sites out there, you don’t need to sign up, or give me your email and then sit through hundreds of spam messages that I blast out to you. I wrote this program for myself a few years back before I moved on to something a little more professional (see our speed reading software reviews), and now I’m giving this to you for no charge whatsoever. Yep, that’s right, a whole speed reading test absolutely free (don’t forget to or like our site).

On this site, you’ll  be able to check reading speed, learn new speed reading strategies, techniques and tips, and much more.

Our site is here to help you learn how to read faster, and with more clarity. I have been doing this for more than 7 years now, and I really think that it’s one of the major reasons why I have been so successful in my company. Your ability to read well is one of the most defining characteristics of a good employee, a good leader, and an overall smart person. Speed reading teaches you not only how to read faster, but also how to read deeper. You should notice that the more you practice the techniques you find here, the more you’re getting out of what you read, and the faster you’re getting through the material.

The Speed Reading Test

Want to know more about our online speed reading test? Here’s how it works:

When you hit the “start†button, you’ll see text pop up on the screen, and it will be your job to read that text as quickly as you can. Then you hit the “stop†button, and it will record your time. Doing a quick calculation, it will tell you exactly what your WPM (words per minute) score was.

The average adult score is around 300 WPM for people who have moderate abiliies. College students who are considered to be “exceptional†readers have scored more than 800 WPM on online speed reading tests. Here is a chart to help you compare your score. All results were taken from an independent study done on reading speeds of different types of people using this exact same test.

If your score is less than what you’d like to see, we would highly recommend you read some of the articles we’ve posted at our main site, or even better, invest in a speed reading software program that will help teach you how to read faster, and with higher reading comprehension.

Our online speed reading test has 5 different passages. You can take the test as many times as you like, though keep in mind that the more often you are exposed to the same passage, the faster you will read it. As such, it is recommended that you only do each passage once. You can also cheat the system by pressing “start†and then “done†immediately, but honestly, if you’re doing that, you really need to get a life.

These are a tremendous help to people trying to practice each separate technique and who are actively working to maximize their reading speed and potential.

A Few Free Speed Reading Tips

When you’re first taking our test, we highly recommend doing the first one without using any of the tips you normally use. That will give you a baseline test that will show you what you normally read at without doing anything to change your score. Once you have your basic number, compare that with a what you get when you start putting these three simple tips in place.

For the second test, try using meta-guiding, a technique that involves you guiding your eyes across the page (or in this case the screen) with your index finger. If you move your finger just slightly faster than you normally read, then you should notice that your WPM speed increases by around 50 words per minute. Using your finger is a training tool, and you should grow out of using it over time, but until you start getting used to the method and the increased pace of your reading speed, you should continue to use it.

On the third test, perform the reading as normal, without using meta-guiding, but while you read, mouth the words to a short children’s nursery rhyme, like “Three Blind Mice” or “I’m a Little Teapot”. While you do this, try to read otherwise as normal. You should notice that your reading speed goes up by a few words per minute. The reason is simple – in doing this, you’re breaking the brain-ear connection. What happens is that when you read, you normally read it “out loud” to yourself in your mind while you’re reading it with your eyes. Since you are used to listening to conversation at a much slower pace than you can read, maintaining this brain-ear connection is very bad for your reading speed. You might notice when you fist start reading this way that your reading comprehension goes down slightly, but it will come back quickly as you practice. In general, you should try to pick the same nursery rhyme each time you read, since you’ll build a tolerance for it, and after a few weeks of consciously practicing this way, the song will fade away and you won’t need it any longer.

The fourth test should be tried using both meta-guiding and with the singing method. When you first combine the two techniques, you might even go slower in reading than you did initially without any speed reading tips to help you out, however, this will change, and it will change quickly. Practice speed reading for a week, and see if that helps you when you take the fifth test, which should, again, be taken with all of your speed reading skills in place.
