The Evatech RCLM2006S RC lawnmower
We know RC lawnmowers have been around a while, but we're into Evatech's RCLM2006S not because "its mission is to deliver fast straight lines and pleasure of the strong kind," but because it looks something a bit more like a really fugly 4WD offroader—not a tool you're supposed to use to trim down that jungle you've got growing out front. It'll set you back $2,300 US though, so if you really want it, make sure you have a secret bank account hidden from your significant other; basically there's no way you're going to be able to justify this thing to anyone, even yourself.

Why spend so much? It seems that it would be pretty easy to build your own RC lawnmower.
First search on google for RC Lawnmover gives this:

If you look at the date it's 12.22.03.
Come on Engadet, please don't go the way of slashdot - 'Yesterday's news today!'
Anither typo:
"make you have a secret bank account hidden from your significant other"
I think it should be "make [sure] you have a secret bank account hidden from your significant other;"
WHAT!!!! no "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" movie reference?
Oops! They show an RC transmitter that's only legal for aircraft use!

Am I the only one that thinks that this sounds really dangerous? Think along the lines of I didn't see my neighbors kid, cat, dog, down at the other end of my yard before...
#5 tomp
Maybe they have a "low flight" mode so it can be used as a hedge trimmer too ;)
Thank you Lectiod! Come on Engadget this shit is so 80's.
So it's a slow news day. The fact that he added the "We know RC lawnmowers have been around a while" disclaimer makes it all good (except the typo).
couldn't someone hack this POS together themselves? go buy some stock rc controllers a cheapo lawnmower and hack it all together so it is self-propelled?
now the real question is, can i get my RIDING mower to be remote controlled and the controller be waterproof? (so i can sit in my pool watching/controlling the lawnmower?)
If you want the hedge trimmer version, it can be seen here:

How sad....this device was actually invented roughly the same year that the shrinking machine was...come on Engadget, keep up with the times :)
Honestly though, it would be nice to have this device available prebuilt, but I have heard and seen a few of these DIY RC mowers in the last few years. It still ends up costing more and being MORE of a hassle than just using a good riding mower (and you don't even get a drink holder and XM radio mount).
Why doesent anyone want to do any kind of manual labour these days. there is nothing wrong with pushing a lawnmower around, its good excercise.
soon everyone will be riding around on scooters because its too much effort to walk.

Usage Note: Awhile, an adverb, is never preceded by a preposition such as for, but the two-word form a while may be preceded by a preposition. In writing, each of the following is acceptable: stay awhile; stay for a while; stay a while (but not stay for awhile).
Best,
Ryan
Yes, mowing can be good exercise, but even if you are not physically disabled, pushing a mower around for 2 hours in 102 degree weather can be very dangerous, especially when the humidity is high. Add to that, another hour of edging and weed whacking, and you are in for a heat stroke.
P.S. For some of us, mowing in the evening is not an option.
Does anyone have any information on how to make a regular gas powered mower into a self-propelled one?
Thanks
