Adios: What the New York Yankees think of AJ Burnett

Last week I wrote about how bad AJ Burnett’s contract has been and would continue to be over its’ remaining two years; and Brian Cashman seems to agree with me.  Coming into Friday, Burnett was listed as the Yankees’ 7th starter—for those who don’t know major league teams use a five-man rotation—and was owed $31.1 million for the rest of the next two years.  Interestingly, Burnett has a year-round contract so he has already been paid $1.9 million by New York in 2012.  No baseball team has a 7th starter, so I’m not really sure what a 7th starter should be paid; but I think $16.5 million per year is quite a bit too much for …

Kid: A Tribute to Gary Carter (VIDEO)

Tom Valcke, President of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame stated, “Gary Carter took the tough hops and thanked God for the compliment.” Few could argue against the validity of such an assertion, but leave it the biggest Montreal and Carter fan on the planet to produce what may be the most fitting tribute to the greatest of all Expos.

Emotionally written, and coupled with the haunting images, a beautiful work of art.

A Humble Brag in Spring

Spring Training is finally here, and with it has come the unabated glee and reckless optimism that emerges at the beginning of any sports season.

Doubts and fears that ran rampant during the offseason (looking at you, Red Sox fans) are now quelled by the opportunity to watch top prospects share the field with grizzled veterans on a warm spring day….

Getting an A Just for Showing Up

February’s the worst. I mean, the second stinking day of the month, some dudes in bad hats pull a groundhog out of his hidey hole and he, without fail or hesitation, predicts six more weeks of winter. Duh! Winter’s gonna end February 2? In Pennsylvania? What a dumb ritual.

Truth be told, February could end a guy. It’s got those killer blizzards that always seem to strike just after a warm spell has reawakened all our longings for spring. Growing up in Rhode Island, that usually meant that the humidity had returned to the atmosphere just enough that we had 24 inches of show and then a 1-inch crust of ice that sliced up your knees and shins as you …

Five Ain’t Nothin’ But A Number

Well, it didn’t take long for the Marlins’ front office to step in one, and this one again involves Logan Morrison.

But it’s not anything Morrison did. Well, it is something he did, but he just asked a question. Miami’s suits made it something that reflects on them as incompetent and embarrassing, which is a pretty good trick.

Number 5 was a retired number ever since the Marlins started playing games. The reason? Carl Barger, one of the driving forces amongst baseball men in establishing a franchise in South Florida, loved Joe DiMaggio. Barger died in 1992, and the Marlins retired the number in his honor.

Recently, LoMo asked the Marlins about wearing number five for him, since it was …

Vlad the Whimper: A Yankee??

Vladimir Guerrero is a hall of famer. Some may not agree with that statement, and frankly I could care less. During his seasons with Montreal and Anaheim, he was a bona fide superstar. Guerrero could be penciled in for .300/30 home runs/100 RBIs each and every season. I’ve never seen a more intimidating right-handed hitter than Vladdy down the stretch in 2004, the season he won the AL MVP. Vlad the Impaler could hit a baseball a country mile, no matter if you threw it at his head or his ankles. Two seasons ago, Vlad posted an OPS of .841, with 29 home runs and 115 RBIs, won a silver slugger, was an all-star, helped lead the Rangers to the …

Bats and Bytes Preview: MLB 2K12

Okay, let’s get one thing out of the way. MLB 2K11 was a great game of baseball. There, it’s been said.

Sure, fans of Sony’s homegrown series will mock 2K loyalists, Xbox 360 owners will try their best to ignore it. And a handful of lonely basement dwellers will laud the merits of Strat-o-Matic, before Tweet-bombing JJ Abrams.

Still, the fact remains that 2K made a solid, enjoyable baseball game last season — the first one that kept me engaged enough to complete franchise mode since the salad days of the original Playstation. It was good, and for that, we were thankful.

Yet, this year, I get the feeling that 2K Sports is holding its cards a little close. While …

Only one pair of beach volleyball players have won back-to-back Olympic gold medals, and one of them is Misty May-Treanor, wife of major league catcher Matt Treanor.

To be an athlete on the world stage is remarkably difficult, but to share your life with someone who also competes at the highest level — in another sport — only makes the complications of relationships that much more complicated.

May-Trainor took a few moments to speak with us last Tuesday about her career, her husband teaching her the ins-and-outs of baseball, dealing with defeat, their support of Josh Hamilton and that regardless of how hectic your schedule becomes — you have to take time to put the Two Back in …
