Another View Of The New Cubs Party Patio Construction

Photo

This photo is courtesy of BCB reader tensionhead, who emailed it to me this morning. You still can't see anything much under all the plastic sheeting, but this gives you a view of it taken from one of the rooftops across from the right field bleachers.

It's also definitive proof that the Cubs are not building anything beyond the existing bleacher structure or raising the back walkway.

You can also see what appears to be some of the construction workers, either on a break, or more likely eating lunch, given that the scoreboard clock reads 12:10 (this photo was taken Friday, February 17).

Finally, this gives a better view of ... whatever that is covering the entire field. Looks like a tarp of some kind. Not exactly sure why the Cubs are doing that; I have never seen the field completely covered during the offseason before.

Ryan Braun Continues To Wait And Other MLBullets

Ryan Braun smiles during Game Four of the National League Championship Series on October 13, 2011 in St Louis. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

We all know the biggest - and saddest - news of the day. Hall of Fame catcher, and passionate lover of the game, Gary Carter passed away yesterday at 57. Our sincerest condolences go out to those who loved him.

Ryan Braun's appeal of a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance was expected to be resolved this week, before the time Braun would report to Brewers' Spring camp. But now, according to Yahoo's Jeff Passan, that may not happen. The delay ever-so-slightly suggests a complex appeal extending beyond the normal "I didn't know what I was taking" or "the test was flawed" excuses (the former of which is not a real defense, and the latter of which is exceedingly hard to prove). Further, the Brewers might have to open their camp not knowing whether they're going to have Braun for the first 50 games of the season or not.

Cub Players: What's Your Fantasy?

Ryan Dempster is debating drafting himself in his fantasy baseball league. Is Ryan foolish or wise? Or just egotistical?

It’s almost spring and that means it’s time to start fantasizing about your favorite baseball players. No, we don’t mean the type of fantasy that some of you have about Geovany Soto, although that can be fun too. Of course we’re talking about building your fantasy baseball teams. Many of you are in leagues already and if you’re not, many of us are in continuing leagues that will likely have openings if you’re interested. But this is about which Cub players you are going to want on your team and which ones to avoid if you want to bring home the trophy this September.

When building a fantasy baseball team, my number one advice to everyone is to know your league rules. Know what the categories are and how many players on a team. Know when the trade deadline is and know how often you can change your lineup. I also hope you would know if your league takes all MLB players or just NL-only. (And my one plea to you is to play in a single-league fantasy league. It’s just way too easy to put together a good team in a ten team, both leagues format. You haven’t played fantasy until you’ve got Freddy Sanchez as your starting second baseman and you’re happy about it.)

So adjust the advice below to the rules of your league. In an NL-only format, most Cubs with a starting job will get drafted, as will some middle-relievers. In shallow, mixed formats, we might only see five or six of these players go on draft day.

Cubs Spring Training Flashback: March 22, 2004

Third baseman Scott McClain of the Chicago Cubs swings during a Spring Training game at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona. (Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty Images)

With pitchers and catchers scheduled to report in just two days, rather than another retro recap of a regular season game, I thought I'd share with you a recap of one memorable spring training game from 2004 -- a season we entered with quite a bit of optimism after the near-miss of 2003 and the acquisitions of players like Derrek Lee and Greg Maddux in the offseason.

The hero of the game in question -- indeed, the hero of that Cub camp -- was Scott McClain, who had the spring training of his (or almost anyone's) life: 16-for-48 with five doubles, six home runs and 16 RBI. For that, he got released at the end of camp, and didn't play at all during the 2004 season. The Cubs brought him back to spring camp in 2005; he played that year at Iowa, hitting .291/.358/.577 with 30 HR and 93 RBI. For that, he got a September callup in which he went 2-for-14.

McClain had some talent, but was 33 by the time he had that big year in Triple-A. Bryan LaHair, who has had a similar career track, is somewhat younger at 29. Maybe he'll do this year what McClain couldn't. The photo on this post was taken during that year's spring (although not during the game that's recapped here -- the game I'm linking to was a night game). You can tell right away it's a spring photo by the "71" on his back.

This site did not begin until 2005, but some time ago I was able to import my baseball-related posts from my old blog into the database here. Hope you enjoy this recap of the Cubs' 1-0 win over the Athletics on March 22, 2004. (Note: the link to the Yahoo recap to which I linked in that post is no longer active.)

Fox, MLB To Increase Saturday Blackouts

This map really doesn't have anything to do with this story, but I love showing how MLB has carved up its TV fiefdoms.

This Sporting News article, one that kind of slipped in under the radar, indicates that Fox and MLB are going to be increasing the number of Saturday night prime-time games this year.

Why is this a bad thing? Read on:

Fox plans to make five or six games available in prime time, instead of the three it usually has in its afternoon slot, USA Today reports. Last season, Fox broadcasted three times on Saturday night during the regular season and saw a big jump in ratings from its Saturday afternoon games.

Notwithstanding the clunky word "broadcasted" ("broadcast" would work just as well), this means that far more people will be blacked out of seeing their favorite team. This 1970s-style regionalization of televised baseball ignores the fact that the modern fan is used to -- most of the time -- being able to see his or her favorite team on TV, on a computer, and on iPads and other mobile devices.

Wait till you see what a Fox executive said about this.

How Not To Un-Retire A Number And Other MLBullets

Marlins' Logan Morrison is safe at third with a triple in the first inning during a game against the Pirates. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)

The latest from around MLB as players shake off the chocolate candy hangover or the pain of Valentine's Day rejection (bah - who's going to reject a pro ballplayer? Even Willie McGee found someone.) ...

What was supposed to be a nice story about Logan Morrison honoring his father has turned into a big of PR black eye for the Miami Marlins. The outfielder, who sports number 20, requested that he be permitted to wear number 5 in honor of his deceased father (who was a big George Brett fan). The number had previously been retired by the Marlins, as a way of memorializing the team's first president, Carl Barger, who served in that post from July 8, 1991 until his death in December of the following year. The Marlins apparently thought Barger's family was on board with the number un-retirement, but the family says no one ever contacted them about the change. Inadvertently failing to cross all of your T's and dot all of your I's rarely looks quite that ugly. (The Marlins finally reached out yesterday.)

The Cubs Are NOT Playing At The Cell In 2013

A general view of U.S. Cellular Field as the Chicago White Sox take on the Chicago Cubs in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs defeated the White Sox 8-6. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

A report Monday evening on NBC5 in Chicago stated that the Cubs were "in talks" to play the 2013 season at the home of the White Sox, US Cellular Field, colloquially known as "The Cell".

This was quickly refuted in this examiner.com article and also by Fox Chicago. I confirmed this myself late Monday.

The Cubs have gone on record multiple times as saying that when renovations to Wrigley Field begin, that they would be done during the offseason and also during road trips during the season. At the moment, no announcement has been made and the last thing I heard, the target date for completion of renovations was 2016, not anything that would suggest that construction would start in 2013.

But what if the Cubs did decide, sometime in the future, that they'd rather play a year at the Cell and renovate Wrigley that way? After the jump, a few thoughts.
