2012 NFL Draft: Pre-Combine Thoughts From Mike Mayock

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock held a conference call Thursday to discuss 2012 draft prospects in advance of next week's Scouting Combine. I thought I would share some tidbits from the call that might be of interest.

On Boston College middle linebacker Luke Kuechly, who seems unlikely to fall to the Giants at 32:

"I think he's the best inside linebacker in this draft by far. He's a natural three-year junior. He's got more production
than you could imagine. He's never been hurt. He's got no significant injuries. He's clean off the field, intelligent. He's got great instincts, and he's a better athlete than people think."

On Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict:

"I'm not a fan at all. ... I just watched a bunch of his tape the other day, and I said forget the penalties and
all is that stuff that surrounds him. What kind of football player is he? And I came away unimpressed. ... his instincts aren't good. He gets enveloped by big bodies. He runs around end blocks. For a big, strong guy, he's nowhere near as good at the point of attack as I thought he would be."

Victor Cruz Or Jeremy Lin? Who Is The Bigger Story?

New York Knicks' Jeremy Lin items are on sale before the basketball game between the Sacramento Kings and the New York Knicks, Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, in New York. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II)

Here is a question for you, New York Giants fans. What is a bigger, more incredible story -- the improbable rise to stardom of Victor Cruz with the Giants, or 'Linsanity,' the amazing story of Jeremy Lin and the New York Knicks?

Both great stories. Both guys who came virtually out of nowhere to reach heights no one could have imagined for either of them when their respective seasons started.

Cruz, of course, set the Giants single-season record for most yards received, Salsa danced his way into the hearts of New York fans -- and all the way to the Grammys -- and was a huge part of the reason the Giants won the 2012 Super Bowl.

Lin, of course, is the twice-cut Asian born point guard who has come from the end of the bench to rescue the Knicks' season and probably coach Mike D'Antoni's job. He has spawned a marketing craze and a 'Lin-guage' all his own. Plus, he's got Kim Kardashian hot on his trail.

Just a fun topic to debate on a Friday afternoon. Your thoughts?

2012 NFL Draft Prospect Profiles: Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

Running back Lamar Miller (6) of the Miami Hurricanes. (Photo by Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images)

We know the New York Giants have decisions to make at running back this offseason. Do they want to bring back Brandon Jacobs? If so, how much can they pay him? If not, can DJ Ware, Da'Rel Scott or Andre Brown pick up Jacobs' workload. Considering the condition of his feet and ankles, how much more time does Ahmad Bradshaw have as an elite NFL back?

With all of those questions, you have to believe running back is on the team's radar this offseason. With that in mind, let's use today's 2012 NFL Draft Prospect Profile on a back who -- as things stand now -- might be available when the Giants make the final selection of the first round this April in the 2012 NFL Draft. That would be Miami's Lamar Miller.

New York Giants News and Notes: A Different Kind of Offseason Edition

NEW YORK, NY - FEBRUARY 08: New York Giants Defensive End Justin Tuck visits FOX's "Power and Money" at FOX Studios on February 8, 2012 in New York City. (Photo by Cindy Ord/Getty Images)

Good morning fellow Giants fans. It sure is a different offseason so far, isn't it? When you go all the way, the entire Giants' organization and its fan base has a glow to it. We all feel great, and we are looking forward to piecing together our 2012 team already, looking forward to all of the draft shows and free agency talk with our Giants being referred to as "defending champions." Ah yes, it's a different kind of offseason. Let's see what kind of Big Blue News is out there today....

Oh, but first I wanted to personally acknowledge the passing of Gary Carter, one of the greatest Mets of all-time and one of the greatest catchers to ever play the game of baseball. RIP, Kid.

Jeremy Lin's ascent means a shortage of puns and new rules in talent evaluation - ESPN
The Giants just won the Super Bowl, yet Eli Manning, Victor Cruz and friends likely would get trampled on the streets of New York if Lin were standing behind them. Derek Jeter and the Yankees have no chance in the face on Linsanity. In fact, although baseball is just about to get started, the sport has almost no chance of moving the dial this season.

Victor Cruz, Off the Gridiron, in the Front Row - NYTimes.com
Three days after the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in a thrilling Super Bowl, Victor Cruz, the Giants wide receiver with a signature end-zone salsa dance, cut the ribbon to start Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. Then on Friday, he sat next to Bradley Cooper for his first fashion show: the Tommy Hilfiger men’s wear collection.

New York Giants Should Thank the Philadelphia Eagles for Victor Cruz : New York Giants
The Giants did not think Smith would be ready for the start of the 2011 season, so they were unwilling to give him the amount of money he desired. Who was? The Philadelphia Eagles. They signed Smith to a better offer, meaning Cruz would have a chance to prove himself in camp

Ha, don't you love how these things work out? Just like the Eagles took Brandon Graham right before the Giants took JPP. Heh heh.

Randy Moss A New York Giant? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Since it is the offseason and we are willing to discuss just about anything someone throws against the wall, let's talk about this whole Randy Moss un-retirement thing and whether or not there is any chance he would fit with the New York Giants.

In a recent 'Fanpost,' an impassioned plea was made for the Giants to sign the once-great Moss if Mario Manningham, as expected, leaves the Giants via free agency this offseason.

I have only one question for the author of that post. 'ZR,' whoever you are, here is that question. Are you completely nuts?

No wait, make that two questions.

The second one is this. Have you paid any attention to how Jerry Reese, Tom Coughlin and the Giants do business? A method that has won them two Super Bowls.

If Randy Moss was to become a Giant I would qualify that as one of the most stunning personnel decisions ever made by the franchise. A franchise, incidentally, that remains inherently conservative in its nature. Most certainly it would be the most stunning thing to happen since SB Nation and I launched this website back in February of 2007.

I know someone posted a shot from this series the other day but I haven't seen the whole thing until now. I really don't have much to add so I am just waiting for the "current word count" at the bottom of the box to turn green and it hasn't done that yet. It is raining right now...still red. It was cold this morning...still red. Umm...I came back from California last weekend...still red. I wonder how many stupid thing I will have to come up with before I see green...still red. Red is a weird word when you keep typing it or saying it over and over...still red. Tommy Boy is a funny movie...still red. Chris Farley is dead...still red. This is getting a bit tired...still red. I wonder if it really turns green or if it's just my imagination - GREEN.
