In My Own Words:
In my 30s I decided that if I was going to be a writer when I grew up, I'd best get started. For the past 20 years I have made my way as an investigative reporter, editor, critic, song writer, dramatist, poet, humorist, essayist, radio host and biographer. Along the way I have picked up a small handful of awards for investigative journalism, humorous commentary and criticism from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies and the Society of Professional Journalists and walked away with first prize in the Southeast Poetry Slam due to a mathematical error on the part of the chief judge (it was actually a tie.) In November, 2009, I was elected to the Asheville City Council, based on a platform rooted in environmentalism, civil liberties, smart growth, and localism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, February 4, 2012
It is rare that a single book triggers reexamination of everything you thought you knew about a single subject, and rarer still that such reading triggers reconsideration of everything you thought you knew. In the same sense that Newton swallowed Kepler and Einstein swallowed Newton, David Deutsch's tour de force has reordered my intellectual history and set me to deep questioning of truths I have held close for forty or more years.

If you look back through my hundreds of reviews on Amazon, you'll find Dawkins, Hofstadter, Diamond, Meadows, McKibben, Kurzweil, Pirsig, Ehrlich, Wilson, Gould, Jaynes and many more thinkers on the nature and fate of humanity. This morning I'm… Read more
The High-Beta Rich: How the Manic Wealthy Will Tak&hellip by Robert Frank
4.0 out of 5 stars The wealth of nascents, December 7, 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Robert Frank has delivered an eye-opening exploration of modern wealth and its hazards. The reader gets a tour of the high-end repo biz, the excesses and collapses of the very rich, the collateral damage inflicted by bubbles and busts, and the ramifications for governance in an increasingly wealth-dominated world. Frank is not a stylish writer, but has a keen reportorial eye for the pertinent fact and the odd happenstance that lifts a story above newspaper accounting. If the author's analysis is correct, we had all best hope that the Occupy* movement succeeds in its moral crusade to tame the economic beast, else we are in for much more of the financial volatility experienced since the… Read more

Don't bother. I mean, really. Don't bother.
Awful isn't the half of it. Impenetrable. A poseur.

Run away screaming.
Seriously.

I have read widely for all of my life, sometimes just backing up to a shelf at the library and plucking one at random. My preferences have shifted from fiction toward non-fiction over the years.
