Parliament grills Google on privacy
TechEye - Latest Twitter news
31 Jan 2012 | 6:45 am
Google has faced a grilling from British MPs on a joint committee over their own privacy concerns, proving evasive over its powers to protect personal information. Against a backdrop of increasing worries about personal data online, representatives from Google, Facebook and Twitter squirmed under questioning. As part of an ongoing inquiry from Lords and Commons members into privacy, MPs railed at the lack of clarity with using personal information, as well as an inability to protect the privacy of public figures. We suspect they are more concerned with the latter. The trio managed to largely…

How to Map Lead Nurturing Content to Each Stage in the Sales Cycle
16 Feb 2012 | 11:40 am
Lead nurturing is a crucial part of your marketing and sales success. Studies show that 50% of leads are qualified but aren't immediately ready to buy something from you [Source: Gleanster Research]. With lead nurturing, however, you can bring those leads through your sales funnel and garner 4-10 times the response rate compared to a regular email blast while doing it [Source: SilverPop/DemandGen Report]. To nurture those leads correctly, however, you need to somehow adjust your messaging based on their point in the sales cycle. But how do you do that? The best lead nurturing campaigns begin…

Securing your Twitter experience with HTTPS
13 Feb 2012 | 3:20 pm
Last year, we added the option to always use HTTPS when accessing Twitter.com on the web. This setting makes your Twitter experience more secure by protecting your information, and it’s especially helpful if you use Twitter over an unsecured Internet connection like a public wi-fi network. Now, HTTPS will be on by default for all users, whenever you sign in to Twitter.com. If you prefer not use it, you can turn it off on your Account Settings page. HTTPS is one of the best ways to keep your account safe and it will only get better as we continue to improve HTTPS support on our web and mobile…

What is ‘The Way of the Web’
17 Feb 2012 | 10:45 am
When I started blogging years ago, I had no idea that one day it would become the main public face of my business and career. It started because I’d made a few attempts to launch websites before becoming employed as a journalist, but had never made the effort to learn how to code and develop a decent site, so when technology offered me a way that I could publish whatever I wanted with no Editor, it seemed like a wonderful freedom. If you’ve ever tried to name a website, business, book or band, you’ll identify with the problem of coming up with a name for something –…

15 Feb 2012 | 8:15 am
I’ve been running a personal blog for about 6 years, including early experiments on Blogger. Prior to that I’d had a simple homepage, along with some other static websites to play around with. Over time I’ve managed to attract a reasonably large audience every month with a range of articles mainly covering writing and content, marketing, social media, SEO, and technology. But until 18 months ago, it was very much still a passion for my spare time, along with the videogame sites I’ve launched. But after starting a freelance business, and with the ambition of growing, it…

12 Feb 2012 | 4:14 pm
How do you apologise when you’ve made a serious mistake? I wrote about how brands can actually be more successful by admitting imperfections and mistakes last week – and tonight I happened to read a jaw-dropping example of a mistake by a newspaper (via Newspaper Death Watch). The summary is the photo of an innocent 40-year-old man named Angel Ortiz was used in a front page story about a horrific crime comitted by a 20-year-old with the same, and apparently very common, Spanish name. As a result, the innocent party has lost work, been persecuted and is effectively reduced to hiding…

I’m against these measures for 2 reasons, and it’s not about being able to pirate films, music or books. In all honesty, I can’t remember the last time I consciously attempted to download pirated content – I’m too busy to spend time worrying…

No to Google for the moment Apple has introduced a new share feature in OS X Mountain Lion that will allow users to share files and information much more quickly, thanks to something called Share Sheets. The new feature, demoed in the latest operating system developer preview that launches on 16 February, will let users share directly from an app as well as photos, videos, links and documents. Rather than just letting you share via email, Messages, or AirDrop, however, Apple has turned to three third-party services to give the new feature in Mountain Lion some real meat. Twitter country censorship tweets up a fuss

Not a happy Twitterverse Twitter's wings have received a bit of a clipping with the first signs of mass regional censorship being hinted at by the micro-blogging platform. In a blog post entitled "Tweets still must flow" the company has announced that it now has the ability to remove tweets on a country by country basis; rather than a blanket removal as was in place before. "As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression," it stated. "Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist…

Not a Fan of the New Timeline? Then Just Change It Back
15 Feb 2012 | 11:04 am
TweetPersonally, I mostly like the new Timeline and have been using it since September when it was possible for developers to get early access, but it seems that the majority of you aren’t thrilled with the new layout and I see people asking what they can do to keep the old one, a lot. There is one crazy option I’ve seen posted, suggesting that if you use an old version of Internet Explorer you’ll still see the old layout but who wants to use Internet Explorer, especially an old version? Since Facebook isn’t giving us the option to choose which layout we use —…
Facebook Fan Pages Shift Left; Ticker Added to Chat Sidebar
4 Feb 2012 | 10:07 am
TweetTwo days ago I noticed that Facebook fan pages had suddenly shifted to the left and were no longer centered. On large monitors that resulted in a lot of blank space on the right side. I remember back in the 90s most web pages were left aligned but nowadays all pages are centered, so unless Facebook was on some sort of weird nostalgia trip, I assumed they were preparing for something. This morning I figured out what. Facebook has added the Ticker to the Chat sidebar when viewing Pages so now you can keep up with what your friends are doing even when you’re not viewing your Newsfeed…
Why do People Get Sucked in by Phishing Scams? They Don’t Think
15 Jan 2012 | 10:04 am
TweetI bet I post a new phishing scam warning at least once a week on Facebook, — along with lots of other people — and yet, thousands of suckers (sorry for being blunt) continue to fall for them every time. Sometimes the offer is so ridiculous it baffles me why anyone would fall for it, but they do, over and over and over. This morning I got an email from “Facebook Surveys” and the subject was, “Vote now for your opinion of Facebook features”. I have included a screen shot of the email below and as you can see, they used Facebook’s logo and style to…
Does Facebook Encourage Over Sharing?
13 Jan 2012 | 8:03 am
TweetSharing on Facebook is getting out of hand. People joke about not using Twitter because they don’t care what their friends had for breakfast or when they cleaned the cat’s litter box and yet Facebook is adding updates in our newsfeed from apps that let us know what our friends are listening to, watching, and doing as they’re doing it. I really, really don’t care what you’re listening to or watching right now. Seriously, I don’t. But this morning I noticed Disqus comments in my newsfeed. Really? The History Of Social Media (1978-2012) [INFOGRAPHIC]
17 Feb 2012 | 12:00 am
Social media? That’s all Twitter and Facebook, right? And didn’t it start in the last few years? Not so. Despite appearances, the history of social media traces back as far as the late 1970s, when computer hobbyists Ward Christensen and Randy Suess invented the bulletin board system (BBS). The launch of the Mosaic web browser in 1993 gave birth to the world wide web, and from here we never looked back. From Geocities and Blogger in the late 90s, through to Friendster and MySpace in at the turn of the millennium, the path to present day social stalwarts Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and the…

The Rise of Mobile in Retail
11 Feb 2012 | 3:02 pm
Mobile apps can be the door to happy customers and more retail sales, but they can also have drawbacks if not researched well and done correctly. Altimeter released a great report on where Mobile Retail stands right now, and reviews a few of the missteps as well as the inroads companies have made trying out mobile in retail. Some successes include Starbucks, a mobile pay and use-tracking solution I personally use often because it works so well (though I don’t tend to use their mobile play app to animate their cups – it suffers from accuracy and lag issues). I also liked the notes…

Considering I’m writing Social Media Metrics for Dummies, I don’t talk about metrics often on this blog. Mainly that’s because I’m too busy helping clients figure metrics out in real life. It’s not a tool for deep metrics analysis but it is a great tool for quick content analysis – seeing what’s working for you as a social network, as well as what’s emerging as sharable topics on your blog. 7 tips to humanize your brand on Facebook
11 Jan 2012 | 9:05 am
Facebook is a personal social network, it’s where friends and family stay in touch, connect, update each other, etc. It was never made for business (until not long ago). However many marketers and brands treat it as another advertising medium to promote their product. Ssssstoopp it.. After starting a new brand on Facebook for my business, and learning from other brands, I thought I should share some methods that I’ve found to be effective in getting people to notice your brand. Let us start with one of the most controversial:1. Put a face on Facebook. Not all brands want to put their…
5 Social media trends that will lead 2012.
3 Jan 2012 | 8:36 am
Oh no, not another 2012 social media trends prediction post. This is different because I have time travelled back from the future to warn you about what is going to happen this year. Hopefully, telling you this won’t change the future and causing ‘ the butterfly effect’ to happen. It was scary enough to see Ashton Kutcher “almost†giving a guy a….. you know what! So what’s big this year? Almost the same as last year, actually. However we’ll see a few areas which will be more concentrated than others. 1. Mobile/tablets I’m putting my eggs into this. I predict that we will…
Failure is not doing
31 Dec 2011 | 6:08 pm
Its 2012 friends! Will 2012 be the end of the world? I doubt so, then again I could be wrong . Its great to start a new year fresh! I don’t have a new years revolution set but I do have goals that I want to achieve in 2012. I was able to achieve some last year and I’m making 2012 my “redemption yearâ€. What about you? Whatever you’ve decided or plan to achieve, I’m going to say something which may sound cliche…… just do it, better yet do it TODAY. In my honest opinion, there is no perfect time to “start†except NOW. Now will be always be the right time to do what…

The Science Behind Inbox Influencer
2 Feb 2012 | 9:45 am
As our base of Inbox Influencer users continue to grow, we are getting many questions regarding how we drive relevance – and make suggestions based on not just how generally ‘influential’ someone is, but also what they communicate about and to whom. Toward that end, we thought we’d share this post from our own Tim Hastings – Reputation (trust) vs. User Interest (ego) (TagWalk blog) who talks about the concept of deriving relevance from social media. “When trying to find interesting people online, it is useful to be able to differentiate between somebody who…
Is Social Marketing Replacing Content Marketing – or Enhancing It?
30 Jan 2012 | 9:15 am
Interesting post by David Strom on ReadWriteWeb this past weekend – Blogging Declines Across the Inc. 500. As stated in the UMass Dartmouth study behind the headline: Fifty percent of the 2010 Inc. 500 had a corporate blog, up from 45% in 2009 and 39% in 2008. In this new 2011 study, the use of blogging dropped to 37%. Yet despite the drop in blogging, other Social channels are picking up the slack. This was the first year that executives were asked if their company plans to increase their investment in social media. While 25% said they would keep their social media budget the same, the…
What’s ‘Best’ is What Works
25 Jan 2012 | 11:38 am
I jumped into a discussion today on Focus.com where a community member asked the question “What’s the best time to post to social networks?” My answer, which built off fellow Focus Expert Andrew Baker’s, is that the ‘best’ time is when your audience is attentive and available – and when you have the right content. And those times depend – so it’s very difficult (and I’d argue impossible – or at least overly simplistic) to say something like ‘11:00 AM”. Which in turn got me thinking about the related and much-debated…

What do CMOs need to focus on in 2012?
18 Jan 2012 | 7:44 am
I love this post from Mark Hughes of C3 Metrics as published on Business Insider. 5 Things Chief Marketing Officers Need To Do To Stay On Top Of Their Game Here’s the list – click through to read the rest: Five ways for CMOs to lengthen that 18 months to 36 and much longer. Stop Worrying About Your Tenure: Part of the problem is that CMOs play defense. They spend a lot of time worrying about the chain of command, who reports to who and when the next board meeting is. They play too little offense because they’re afraid they’re going to ruffle some feathers, and then the next…

UK government pledges further solar subsidy cuts
9 Feb 2012 | 10:26 am
The British government has threatened to derail the solar industry with big cuts to subsidies, it has been claimed, despite saying new plans are an “improvement”. Solar subsidies are being reduced to around half the level of before a government consultation was launched last year, with a drop to 21p/kWh as of April this year. In July, these could further drop to 13.6p/kWh, while the government stated its aim to change subsidies regularly in accordance with market pressure as part of new plans. It is hoped that this will remove the need for emergency reviews, which have seen…
Foxconn hacked by SwaggSec
9 Feb 2012 | 5:06 am
Hacking group Swagg Security said that it had broken into Foxconn's network and found usernames and passwords for vendors that could be used to place fraudulent orders for companies like Apple and Microsoft. Swagg Security said that it was "considerably disappointed" with the inhuman working conditions at Foxconn, although that did not appear to be the main reason for the hack. It said that it was a hacktivist group but was a Greyhat organisation. SwaggSec alleged that it had bypassed Foxconn's firewall "almost flawlessly." They dumped "most of everything of significance," including…
RIM decides it needs super heroes
1 Feb 2012 | 5:19 am
The Justice League of Canada, which includes such super heroes as Seal Clubbing Man, Camomile Woman, Hibernation Man and Maple Syrup Boy, has received a call from RIM asking it to send a hero to sort out its problems. Earlier this week we reported the new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said that he had a cunning plan, but he did not say what it was. It turns out that he had been on the blower for a whole host of super heroes dedicated to helping save the outfit's bottom line from the evil Apple cult. We guess he was hoping for someone who could leap over tall buildings in a single bound, but since…
Parliament grills Google on privacy
31 Jan 2012 | 6:45 am
Google has faced a grilling from British MPs on a joint committee over their own privacy concerns, proving evasive over its powers to protect personal information. Against a backdrop of increasing worries about personal data online, representatives from Google, Facebook and Twitter squirmed under questioning. As part of an ongoing inquiry from Lords and Commons members into privacy, MPs railed at the lack of clarity with using personal information, as well as an inability to protect the privacy of public figures. We suspect they are more concerned with the latter. The trio managed to largely…
SOPA is alive and well in Ireland
24 Jan 2012 | 4:12 am
While the EU is saying that SOPA was a bad law that no one needed it seems that Ireland did not get the memo. According to legal experts in the Emerald Isle the government there is about to bring in a SOPA style law which is even vaguer and open-ended. The law in Ireland will allow music companies to order internet service providers to block access to websites. The Minister of State at the department of Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation, Sean Sherlock, claimed that the law is completely different to SOPA in America. It is just addressing the High Court judgment handed down by Mr Justice…
