Teeth are small, calcified structures that are located in the jaws of some vertebrates and that enable eating by breaking down food through chewing. Some animals also use teeth for defensive purposes, to intimidate competitors or bring down prey.

Dental bleaching is the practice of whitening teeth, primarily for cosmetic reasons. The American Dental Association notes that there are several ways to whiten teeth, such as in-office bleaching (applied by a professional), at-home bleaching (performed by patients in the comfort of their homes), over-the-counter bleaching agents and non-dental options.

Over-the-counter teeth whitening products can include chewing gums, gels, toothpastes and mouthwash. Toothpaste is the most common whitening product and usually contains a combination of grinding agents (silica, calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate), fluoride and antibacterial agents.

There is a risk of over-bleaching teeth, especially with intensive treatments used at home. Chemical burns to the teeth and mucous membranes are possible with the use of strong chemical agents, as are pain and increased hot/cold sensitivity.
