IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee

The IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee develops and maintains networking standards and recommended practices for local, metropolitan, and other area networks, using an open and accredited process, and advocates them on a global basis. The most widely used standards are for Ethernet, Bridging and Virtual Bridged LANs Wireless LAN, Wireless PAN, Wireless MAN, Wireless Coexistence, Media Independent Handover Services, and Wireless RAN. An individual Working Group provides the focus for each area.

IEEE 802 Standards Available for Free Download!

The IEEE has begun making 802 standards available for download from the web.  Six months after the initial publication of a standard, it will be available for download here.

In addition to the standards, there are occasional questions about the standards, to which the 802 Working Groups respond.  These responses can be found on the IEEE Standards Association web site under Standards Interpretations. NOTE: As of 2012, the IEEE SA changed its policy so that interpretations will no longer be issued by the 802 Working Groups.
