Transformer FAQ's
The questions are flowing, and we're loving it.Will the magnets harm my electronic devices or delete their memory?
No.  We have been using magnets in clothing for eight years, and we have not had problems with magnets interfering with personal electronic devices. Most of these devices use flash memory, which isn't as sensitive to magnetic fields as older devices were.
How warm is the Transformer Jacket?
The Transformer Jacket is a lightweight jacket. It is perfect for spring or for when a warm day turns chilly.
It is similar in warmth to our Tropical Jacket or the Pack Windbreaker. Check out the Temperature ChartIs there a women's version?
There will be!  We just have to wait, ladies...till this spring!
How does this thing work, anyway?

The Jet Setter: 6 Essentials For Packing Light

6 of 6

The Scottvest trench coat is for the take-only-what-you-can-carry kind of traveler. With 18 pockets, this trench coat has room for everything...literally. The different pockets are designed specifically for an iPad, water bottle, digital camera, sunglasses, and almost any other item you can imagine, making the Scottvest trench coat is the only travel accessory you need ( if you plan on wearing a giant, heavy coat around for your entire vacation). Scottvest promises that the coat has a weight-management feature, so you don't feel like you're competing in a Mr. Universe pageant, and an anti-bulge feature, so you don't look like the Michelin Man when you have your entire life stuffed inside your jacket. Not to fret if your travel needs call for more than 18 pockets-- Scottvest also makes a men's Carry-On Jacket with 33 pockets, which according to the site, is designed to carry not only iPads and cameras but clothes and toiletries, too.

Smarter Cover: This Vest Switches Into a Jacket Using Magnets

Scottevest Transformer Jacket Sports & Outdoors   · $160  · Scottevest

Boasting more secret compartments than a drug mule’s Suburban, Scottevest‘s apparel is made to turn you into a walking home office. The company’s new Transformer takes one of its famously geek-friendly jackets and turns it into a drop-top — the sleeves are removable, and they come off easily, without fuss, since they’re held in place using only magnets.

This isn’t one of those zippered convertibles where you need to take the whole jacket off to remove the sleeves. The one-piece arms-and-shoulders assembly attaches via a series of magnets sewn into the cuffs around the shoulders. You can pull off and reattach the sleeves in seconds, all without taking off the vest. It comes in handy if you want to cool off a bit, but you don’t want to ditch the $1,500 worth of gear stashed in your jacket.

The sleeves are removable, and they come off easily, without fuss, since they’re held in place using only magnets.

And yes, you really can stash a huge hardware payload in here. The Transformer Jacket sports Scottevest’s trademark myriad pockets: dual touchscreen-friendly smartphone pockets, secure ID pockets, a side pocket with a water bottle holder, a tablet (a freaking tablet!) compartment, a camera pocket, a sunglasses pocket with cleaning cloth (deep breath), a keychain clip, a cord management system and a stuff sack for the sleeves. There are so many pockets, the jacket comes with a map outlining the location and intended use of each pocket.

All Scottevests can be used as covert tech smugglers, but the Transformer’s removable sleeves are a feature unique to this new jacket. If it starts getting too warm, just pop the sleeves off and stuff them into the designated interior pocket (still got that map?). You can either pull the sleeves off from the front, tugging the upper arms toward the wrists, or you can reach back, grab onto the flap of material between the shoulders, and pull forward over your head. To put the sleeves back on, there’s no need to try to line everything up carefully. The magnets are placed well and the sleeves seem to find their way home without much help, snapping right on.

I was first skeptical about the need for a vest like this. Or, more accurately, whether any normal human has enough devices to warrant all those pockets. But I do hate having to cram my jeans with my wallet, my keys, my iPhone and other necessities when I’m traveling. It turns out the internal pocket system is very well-thought-out, and that the cord management system is excellent. When you listen to your MP3 player or the iPad in your pocket, the cords run through a series of loops up to a felt-lined collar that folds down over the cords and keeps everything from tangling up. And when you’re done listening to whatever, there are even individual bud pockets on the inside of the jacket, just below the ears, to stash your earpieces.

I was able to walk around carrying my iPhone, iPad, wallet, sunglasses, a GoPro HD Hero camera, spare SD cards, my keys and my travel docs in my jacket, all at once. I loved the earbud feature — it pretty much eliminated the untangling and earbud wrangling that I loathe.

My one main complaint is that when the jacket is fully loaded, it looks pretty bulky, and it feels that way, too. It’s hard to ignore an iPad digging into your liver when you bend over to tie your shoes. That said, I am pretty eager to see if Scottevest will ever put a MacBook Air pocket somewhere in there.

WIRED Zillions of pockets allow you to carry everything short of a desktop in your jacket. Just about renders backpacks obsolete. Converts from a jacket to a vest and back with ease.

TIRED Otherwise-handsome gear junkies might not look good in a vest. May send jocks into a rage when they see what a nerd you are.

ScottEVest Releases The Transforming Transformer Jacket

posted 10 mins ago

How often has this happened to you: you’re trapped in a Wampa cave on Hoth and your sleeve is trapped under a fallen icicle and you can’t reach your light saber. The only way out is to pull your sleeve off quickly. But if you unzip your sleeve, you’ll wake the Wampa. If you had the ScottEVest Transformer, you could simply pop off the sleeve with one swipe, freeing your blaster arm and saving your life. Instead to lie there and wait for the sweet release of an icy death or, barring that, the razor sharp teeth of the Wampa.

“If only I had bought a ScottEVest,” you think as your shuffle off your mortal coil, your midichlorians dying en masse.

That’s right: ScottEVest, makers of clothing with lots of pockets, have finally answered that common complaint of today’s knowledge worker: “I wish my jacket were a vest sooner.” This is basically a convertable jacket with a few tricks up its sleeve.

The Transformer features a ring of magnets around the shoulder to hold the sleeves until you’re ready to transform. You can pull the sleeves off in seconds and then reconnect them by simply setting them near the shoulder hole. It’s definitely not rocket science, but it’s pretty cool.

The founder, Scott Jordan, recorded an Apple-esque “keynote” for your edification, describing the jacket in loving, almost religious, detail. Watch it if you have a few minutes.

Why is this on TechCrunch? Well, ScottEVest makes some great travel gear and this one is no exception. It’s quite light – more like a running jacket than a windbreaker – and has twenty pockets including an phone pocket and spot for pens and a water bottle. It basically doubles as a carry-on bag that you wear.

The jacket costs $160 and is available in three colors. It’s available for pre-order now.

It’s been several years since we featured a SCOTTEVEST product here on The Gadgeteer and I’m happy to say that in the time since we last took a look at their tech clothing, they’ve added some women’s garments to their line up. I’ve been excited to try them out, so they sent me their Chloe Hoodie to review…

Note: Click the images in this review to see a larger view.

The Chloe Hoodie is made of machine washable 100% Poly Microfleece and is available in two colors: Magic and Kiss. Magic is Black with a Black lining and Kiss is Gray with a Pink lining. The Chloe comes in 6 sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL. They sent me the Kiss in Medium.

This jacket is super comfy and warm. It very soft and has nice deep hand pockets which are lined with plush fleece. The hood is also lined with plush fleece. It really keeps your head warm which is great for me since my hair is still growing back. I love that their Infinity zipper actually wraps around the hood, so that you don’t need drawstrings to cinch it tight around your face. You can just pull the zipper higher as needed.

No one will mistake this as a men’s jacket. It has flattering princess seams and some nice fashion elements to keep it feminine.

The cuffs can be worn turned up like you see here, to expose the plush fleece lining.

Or you can turn the cuffs down and take advantage of thumb holes to keep your hands warm.

All the zippers offer a nice metal pull tab like you see above.

SCOTTEVEST is well known for including lots of pockets in their garments so that your jacket essentially becomes your gear bag. The Chloe offers 14 different pockets. Let take the tour…

First of all, I’d like to mention that the branding on this jacket is pretty minimal. There’s the label on the interior that you see here and an embroidered logo along the waist band that is pictured later in the review.

Here we see the hood. You’ll notice two small white loops. These hold your earbuds.

The back of the hood has a PAN (Personal Area Network), which is geek speak for a special conduit that you can use to route wires like your earbud cables. In the image above, I have my iPhone’s earbuds routed behind my neck through the hood’s lining. Special BudBuckets on either side hold the earbuds when they are not in your ears. The PAN is really handy because you can have your iPhone in one zippered pocket, but still attached to your earbuds.

Ok let’s check out the rest of the pockets. When you unzip the jacket, you’ll find a set of satin pockets on each side. I was really happy to see that they include little cloth labels with icons to help you remember what each pocket is meant to hold.

From the top, you’ll find a budbucket for an earbud.

Below the budbucket it is a pen slot that is shown here with my Pilot FriXion Ball Erasable Ink pen. This slot will also work well for a stylus or pencil.

In the breast area is a vertically zippered pocket that is designed to hold your phone or audio player. A special opening in the roof of that pocket allows you to route earbud wires to the stored device.

Below the phone pocket is a zippered pocket designed to hold your sunglasses. There’s even a glasses cleaning cloth attached to an elastic cord which is sewn into the pocket.

The bottom pocket is designed to hold your camera. Inside that pocket is a small Velcro pouch that can hold SD cards.

On the opposite side, you’ll find a budbucket at the top, with another pen pocket below it. Next in line are two large zippered pockets. The largest is big enough to hold a Kindle sized device and the other works great for storing your passport or a small notebook.

The exterior zippered hand pockets hide a few goodies too. The right one has an extendable / removable key holder. Also in that pocket but not pictured is a lipstick / chapstick holder. The pocket is held closed with Velcro that is pretty strong. I’m a little worried that over time, pulling on the Velcro tab may cause the satin lining to tear.

You’ll notice the embroidered SCOTTEVEST branding below the pocket.

In the other hand pocket, is a small change pocket which is also held closed with Velcro. Like I mentioned before, the Velcro is pretty strong, so it’s not the easiest task to pull the little pocket open with just the fingers of your hand in the pocket. If it were up to me, I’d like to see magnets used to keep these tiny pockets closed.

So what can you carry around in the Chloe? Let’s see…

Here is a selection of gear that I would normally carry in a bag. Included is a Field Note notebook, Pilot FriXion Pen, Kindle Fire, Canon camera, extra SD card, iPhone 4S, Carmex lip balmWaterfield wallet and iPhone earbuds.

Here I am with all that gear stowed in the jacket. I love that each item has its own pocket so that everything isn’t crammed in the hand pockets. With the Chloe, I can carry all the items and still be able to put my hands in my pockets to keep them warm.

I also like that the weight of the gear distributes itself evenly so that walking around is comfortable. The only item that doesn’t feel that comfortable to leave in the jacket is the Kindle Fire. But it really only feels bulky when I’m sitting.

Of all the SCOTTEVEST products that I’ve reviewed over the years, I’d have to say that the Chloe Hoodie is my new all time favorite. The ability to easily carry my essential gear makes it a great alternative to carrying a bag. The fact that it’s so cozy I could sleep in it doesn’t hurt either.

A first look at what we think will transform the way you feel about #clothing. @Ojezap #pioneerpress #travel

SeV’s Transformer goes from vest to jacket…magnetically

13 February //   Posted in Uncategorized

!Master_transformer_jacket_blaze!Master_transformer_vest_coal!Master_transformer_jacket_coal!Master_transformer_vest_blaze

You’ve likely seen or heard about pants that unzip on each leg to become shorts.

ScottEVest has come up with something similar for the upper body — a jacket that transforms into a vest when you remove the sleeves.

There’s a twist: The jacket’s pieces are held together with magnets. This means you can detach the sleeves easily, without having to take off the garment.

Getting the sleeves back on is straightforward, too, since ScottEVest wisely made them a single component, joined via a fabric piece in the rear, just below the user’s neck. The sleeve-reattachment maneuver takes a bit of practice but works nicely, and the magnets engage with satisfying clicks.

I’ll wager Scott Jordan, the founder of ScottEVest, got some of his inspiration from Apple’s magnetically attached Smart Cover for the iPad 2. In fact, he does a Steve Jobs imitation (don’t quit your day job, dude) in a video promoting the Transformer.

He notes in the video that previous SeV jackets had detachable sleeves, but used zippers instead of magnets and were therefore more of a hassle to convert.

The Transformer, like other ScottEVest garments, is replete with inner pockets for gadgets of all sizes (even an iPad) along with sunglasses, passport, cash, water bottle and other essentials (along with your sleeves if they’re detached).

The fit is first-rate, too.

In an earlier post, I lamented how some of ScottEVest’s products had proven problematic in fit and finish, at least for me, but how it redeemed itself with its recently released Puffer jacket.

The Transformer is another winner. SeV is on a roll.

Just one quibble: It would have been great to have at least one breast pocket on the outside of the Transformer to stash an iPhone. The jacket has left and right hand-warmer pockets, but that’s where I put my keys and wallet.

There are breast-height pockets on the inside of the Transformer, but that required me to unzip the jacket to remove or manipulate my mobile device. SeV’s signature multipocket vest, the one from which the company derives its name, has two outer breast pockets.

25 Days in Mayan Country

It’s Thursday afternoon and I’m preparing for my 25-day trip through the ancient ruins of Guatemala and El Salvador, which will be my 40th and 41st countries. I’m kicking this trip off in Guatemala City and I hear it’s a bustling capital city full of parks, markets, and museums. Though I have traveled for longer, this next month will bring a few challenges such as the heat and the grueling transportation schedule to cover as much ground as possible. Once I’m delivered safely to the El Salvadorian border I’ll only be half-way done with this Central American adventure.

A fantastic brand in travel clothing,Scottevest, is sponsoring me for this trip. You may have heard about the brand or seen me wearing this pocket-ridden apparel in my videos. I am excited for the sponsorship opportunity but even more excited to try out all my new gear while exploring Mayan ruins and colonial towns. Scottevest makes clothes for any weather, for every traveler.

The pieces I’m taking include: performance teeperformance polotravel vestcamp shirt, and bamboo polo. That’s over 37 pockets! The clothes are ideal for fast movers traveling with lots of gear. The production gear I’m taking includes: GoPro Camera, Flip Mino HD Camera, Nikon P-7000 Camera, tripodsSteadicam Smoothee, digital hard drives, laptop, and I-phone.

Here is the route of my trip below. I think these routes are a good way for anyone to experience these countries. They do, however, require ground transport.

Guatemala

Guatemala City, Panajachel, Chichicastenango, Huehuetenango, Quetzaltenango, Pacific Coast, Volcan de Pacaya, Monterrico, Antigua, Quirigua, Livingston, Rio Dulce and Peten (Tikal)

El Salvador

San Andres, Santa Ana, Tazumel, Casa Blanca, Nahuizalco, Salcoatitan, Juayua, Apaneca, Ataco, Tacuba, Puerto de Liberta, San Salvador, Chihuatan, La Palma, San Ignacio, Citala, El Pital, San Sebastian, Iloobasco, Suchitoto, Suchitan, Perquin, San Fernando, arambala, Cacaopera, Bahia de Jiquilisco, Alegria, Berlin, and Laguna de Alegria.

Both tourism boards are providing me with a guide and transportation. I can’t wait to shoot hours of video with my GoPro strapped onto the car, snap incredible images and blog about my time spent in Central America. Since it is the year that the Mayans predicted the world would end, there has been an increase in tourism to these areas. Their amazing civilization has undoubtedly left its mark on the world and I can’t wait to bring it to you in my city guides and videos.

Hasta mañana,

David
