While women are increasingly reaching key positions in the world of European politics and business, they are still massively underrepresented and facing an uphill battle for recognition and equal pay.

“Still today in governments and parliaments, less than a quarter of members are women,” said Margot Wallstrom, the Swedish vice-president of the European Commission ahead of International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8.

“There is no lack of female candidates,” she added. “The reality is men tend to choose men.”

“One half of the population is seriously underrepresented” and, this being the case, “the policy agenda will be set by men,” Wallstrom said during an EU parliamentary debate this week.

Despite a rise in the number of women candidates, male politicians stand a better chance of getting elected due to deep-seated prejudices and habits, a study by the European Commission found.

According to data extrapolated from across the continent, an election with an equal number of male and female candidates would still result in a parliament with just 39 percent women representatives.

In other words, it would take 63 percent women candidates to achieve gender equilibrium in the final assembly.

“It’s wrong to blame women voters,” said Drude Dahlerup, a professor in the department of political science at Stockholm University. “The main problem is that male voters vote for male candidates.”

“You may perhaps beat science into a person, but the ethical has to be beaten out of them, as with the corporal who, on seeing the makings of a soldier in a country lad, could say, ‘I’ll manage to beat a soldier out of him,’ whereas when it comes to imparting the little book on […]

“So for the first thing, the knight will have power to concentrate the whole content of life and the whole significance of reality into a single wish. If a man lacks this concentration, this intensity, if his soul from the beginning is dispersed in the multifarious, he never comes to the point of making the […]

“This was the commandment, ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself,’ but when the commandment is rightly understood it also says the converse, ‘Thou shalt love thyself in the right way.’ If anyone, therefore, will not learn from Christianity to love himself in the right way, then neither can he love his neighbor; he may […]

Save me, O God, from ever being completely sure; keep me unsure until the end so that then, if I receive eternal blessedness, I might be completely sure that I have it by grace! It is empty shadowboxing to give assurances that one believes it is by grace — and then to be completely sure. […]

“Are the consequences of Christ’s life more important than His life? No, by no means, quite the contrary — if this were so, Christ was merely a man.†——————————————————– ~Source: Practice in Christianity (1850) Author: Søren Kierkegaard using the pseudonym Anti-Climacus Filed under: Blooms Tagged: Anti-Climacus, Practice in Christianity (1850) […]

“How poor a thing is language compared with the unmeaning yet significant combination of clangorous sounds in a battle or at a banquet, which not even a theatrical rendering can reproduce, and for which language possess but a few words! “What is earthly honor at its dizzy pinnacle other than contempt for existence? What are riches, the highest superabundance of riches, other than poverty? For no matter how much all the earth’s gold hidden in covetousness may amount to, is it not infinitely less than the smallest mite hidden in the contentment of the poor! […]
