Studs are for Duds

Posted in Car Care, Rants & Raves, Roads by Dustin Driver | February 16th, 2012 | 2 Responses |

Studs. Much studs.

When Old Man Winter belches hoarfrost over the land, it’s only natural to seek solace in a nice set of studded snow tires. The grinding metallic paws provide a sense of security. They just feel like they’re slicing through the ice, delivering life-saving stability and grip. Au contraire mon frère! Studded tires are terrible. They provide less grip in frosty conditions than their specialized studless counterparts and they pulverize pavement, turning roads in to rutted moonscapes. Stop buying studded tires. They suck.

The Limousines

Combine Doc Brown’s DeLorean from “Back to the Future”, a Porsche 911, a Syd Mead-esque future scape and a full-on frontal collision and you’ve got the makings of a great introduction for the Limousines new music video, “The Future”.

Ferrari FF vs. Jensen FF

Jensen FF

When Ferrari announced the release of their new all-wheel drive FF early last year the performance world was a bit taken back. I mean let’s face it, Ferrari isn’t known for building practical cars. However that didn’t stop them from jumping on the practicality bandwagon. Keep in mind though that before Ferrari became all soccer mom friendly, Jensen did the same thing with their Interceptor FF GT car almost 50 years ago. Both cars are front engine with four seats and four-wheel drive. However where the Jensen was revolutionary, the Ferrari was simply, evolutionary. Click through for the video and enjoy.

2012 BMW M5 vs Nissan GT-R: King Kong vs Godzilla

BMW M5 vs Nissan GT-R

If you’re Nissan then the odds of you doting like a proud poppa over your now adolescent son GT-R are pretty damn good. I mean let’s face it, every time a new super car comes out it’s immediately compare to it. When released back in 2008 the GT-R took the automotive world by surprise. I mean sure everyone assumed it was going to be a force to be reckoned with, but I doubt they thought it was going to be THE force. Recently Autocar took BMW’s new M5 super sedan and pitted it against the GT-R, and even though we can probably all guess the outcome, you’ve got to admit that it’s still fun to watch car after car get its ass handed to them by Nissan’s mighty Godzilla.

The Reetz Epic Adventure

Reetz Adventure

If there’s one thing that I’m an authority on it’s the road trip. You see I’ve traversed the United States in just about every way possible. From North to South, East to West and even diagonally and I’ve done it many, many times. Taking a road trip is one thing, but taking a road trip in an old car is something else entirely. New cars factor out many of the variables that make for a great adventure. Things like break downs, crappy mileage, lack of creature comforts and of course, the availability of parts. Now some of you may ask, “Why would you ever want to put yourself in a position where any of those things could come into play?” Well, the fact of the matter is this. Running an old car over thousands of miles gives you a sense of accomplishment.

It makes people stop, stare and ask questions and at days end, it’s also just more fun. The Reetz family recently took part in a West coast road trip in a 1930 Model A Coupe with a Miller OHV system and a carburetor and even though they brought a support vehicle you can bet it was one of the most memorable journeys they’ve ever had. 2012 Ford Edge Limited FWD EcoBoost: RideLust Review

2012 Ford Edge Limited EcoBoost

Thumbs Up: Contemporary styling, comfortable ride.

Thumbs Down: Heavy on chrome and fake-wood trim.

Buy This Car If: You’re looking for a fuel-efficient crossover that can still carry five adults.

If Goldilocks were shopping Ford’s product lineup for an SUV or crossover, there’s a good chance that she’d settle on the not-too-small-but-not-too-big Ford Edge. It’s got more interior room (and higher build quality) than the outgoing Ford Escape, yet it’s smaller than either the Explorer SUV or the Edge crossover. In fact, for the average American family with 2.4 kids and a dog, the Edge is just about the perfect size. Read More…

Man buys a Walmart to house his car collection

Posted in General by MrAngry | February 13th, 2012 | 1 Response |

Some people collect stamps, others comic books, however if your name is Rick Treworgy then you collect muscle cars – A LOT of them. Ricks been collecting cars now for almost 40 years and over that time his collection has grown immensely. He began in 1973 with just a few cars, but now his stable has grown to around 225 vehicles. Everything from vintage 1930′s roadsters, to hot rods and resto-mods can be found at Rick’s Muscle Car City, a museum that Rick opened inside an old Walmart when he realized that his old 40,000 square-ft warehouse wasn’t big enough. Sheesh… and I though I was lucky to have a usable two car garage.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs. Nissan GT-R

Camaro ZL1 vs Nissan GT-R

Pairing up the new 2012 Camaro ZL1 against Nissan’s mighty GT-R is the equivalent of bringing a knife to a gun fight. I mean sure, there is a chance that you could get lucky, but those odds are pretty slim, so the best bet would simply be not to accept the challenge in the first place. There is no question that Chevy’s new super mullet is a pure animal. It’s got 580 hp, performance traction management and enough testosterone to impregnate the state of Texas. However at days end the Camaro is still a muscle car, which means it has muscle car DNA, which means it was never meant to take on the likes of the GT-R. Yes it’s fast and to date there is no question that its probably the most well sorted production muscle car ever built. However the Nissan GT-R is a super car that was built to take on the world’s best and because of this the competition was over before it even began.

Joy Ride: It’s Not What You Think

Sandro Joy Ride

Live to ride, ride to live. That’s been the mantra of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle company for more than 100 years. That mantra however doesn’t just apply to those who ride big v-twins, but more so to everyone who rides a motorcycle. We all ride for different reasons, but within those reasons one thing remains constant. Riding is something we do for ourselves as it’s a selfish and personal pleasure that those who don’t ride will never know.

I Really Miss Good Fuel Economy

Chevrolet Cruze

This past weekend I took a little trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles and back. That’s 400 miles there, 400 miles back and about 300 around town miles. At first I was going to take my ’68 Charger and stretch its legs a bit, but at 10 mpg and after figuring out that it would’ve cost me over $500.00 in fuel, I decided against it. Then I considered taking my Dodge Magnum SRT8. However at a combined mpg of 16 mpg that would’ve run me over $300.00. My solution? I rented a Chevrolet Cruze from Hertz for $85 for the weekend, used my own insurance and spent a total of $120 in fuel. So, for just a tad over $200 I got there and back without using any of my own cars.

Damn… I really need to think about updating my garage.
