Weinstein Company to expand 'My Week With Marilyn' before Oscars

If you’ve been scouring your local theaters for a showing of My Week With Marilyn, search no more.

Ahead of next week’s Academy Awards, The Weinstein Company announced it will expand its twice-nominated film. Beginning on Feb. 24 (just two days shy of the ceremony), Marilyn will sweep into 600 theaters nationwide, no doubt riding the Marilyn wave that NBC’s Smash has perpetuated, as well as generating more Oscar buzz for Michelle Williams. That said, though she picked up the Golden Globe this year for her portrayal of the titular character, Williams remains at No. 3 in Dave Karger’s latest Oscar predictions.

The film opened in limited release on Nov. 23.

'Friends With Kids' red-band trailer: Now with potty, penis, and Kegel humor

Filed under: Movies and tagged: Movie Trailers, Movies

We’ve already dubbed Jennifer Westfeldt’s Friends With KidsBridesmaids 2: The Babymaker” — and that was before we knew there would be a poop joke. Watch the red-band trailer below. In addition to the changing table mishap (not as bad as The Change-Up, but worse than Life as We Know It), we see more of the relationship between the two best friends (Kissing Jessica Stein‘s Westfeldt and Parks and Recreation‘s Adam Scott) who sleep together to make a baby they share custody of — but begin other relationships (with Ed Burns and Megan Fox). Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm play their newlywed friends, while Maya Rudolph and Chris O’Dowd are their old married buddies. The Ten Must-See Movies This Weekend

Filed under: Movies and tagged: Movies
the-fantastic-flying-books

When it comes to the nine films nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, we can all agree on one thing: Some of them are not all that great. Now, we may not agree on which films are bad, per se. I had a religious experience while watching The Tree of Life, but lots of people — even some of my fellow monocle-wearing film nerds — hated it. There are those who find The Artist quite charming, and there are those who find The Artist merely charming. Just about everyone agrees that Hugo is half a loving ode to cinema and half the slowest kids’ movie ever made. My mother said she loved Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which means I have to take a week off from making fun of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. But why not spend the weekend catching up on a whole new set of Oscar nominees? These are films that explore new regions of cinema artistry. Films that haven’t been media-blitzed to death. The most important movies to see this weekend are:

After last weekend’s record-breaking pre-Valentine’s Day frame, Hollywood is feeling hopeful about box office prospects during the upcoming holiday weekend, which will include four days of box office receipts. We’re likely headed another frame of four $20+ million grosses — possibly even five!

Three new movies are hitting theaters — action sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, romantic comedy This Means War, and animated import The Secret World of Arrietty — but The Vow won’t relinquish the top spot so easily. Here are my predictions for the four day holiday weekend: READ FULL STORY »

Descendants

We’re less than a week from the Oscar-ballot deadline, and not much has changed with my Oscar predictions. Best Actor remains the tightest of the four acting races, and I could equally see it going to George Clooney or Jean Dujardin. (Many people have asked me recently whether those two guys could split, resulting in a Brad Pitt win. I don’t really understand their question: What vote would Clooney and Dujardin split? Anyway, it’s not going to happen.) Meanwhile, my only predicted-winner change is in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Although single-credited screenplays usually win, I feel like most voters will consider The Descendants (for right or wrong) basically the work of Alexander Payne. Here are my current predictions in the eight major races.

Oprah in talks for Lee Daniels' 'The Butler'

Oprah Winfrey might be headed back to the big screen for the first time since 1998′s Beloved thanks to Precious director Lee Daniels. A rep for the filmmaker confirms that Winfrey is in talks for a role in The Butler, a period piece to be directed by Daniels based on Wil Haygood’s 2008 Washington Post story “A Butler Well Served by This Election.” (The Hollywood Reporter broke the news late yesterday.)

Haygood’s article tells the story of Eugene Allen, a butler who worked at the White House under eight different presidents from 1952 to 1986. Winfrey (who championed Precious on her talk show) would play Allen’s wife. And Daniels’ has a starry wishlist of co-stars in talks to play the cast’s historical figures: EW confirms that John Cusack is considering playing Richard Nixon and Liam Neeson is in talks for the role of Lyndon B. Johnson. (Mila Kunis and Hugh Jackman were also mentioned in THR‘s story, but reps for the actors say their clients will not be involved in the project.) For the lead role, Daniels is reportedly interested in David Oyelowo (Red Tails).

Osage County is about to welcome two new high-profile residents: Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts.

The Weinstein Company confirmed today that, after being in talks with the Oscar-winning actresses for over a year, Streep and Roberts will appear on screen together for the first time for the adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer- and Tony-winning play August: Osage County. TV vet John Wells (Shameless, ER, The West Wing), who was recently at the helm of the Ben Affleck drama The Company Men, is on board as director. (As we put it back in 2010, “BIGGEST. MOVIE. EVER.”)

'John Carter': Without the source material, would there have been a 'Star Wars'? -- VIDEO

With a little more than three weeks before John Carter hits theaters on March 9, Disney still has a helluva task ahead of them: Get audiences on board to see a sci-fi adventure with an ambiguous title (at best), an untested star (Friday Night Lights‘ Taylor Kitsch), and a series of trailers that have purposefully kept much of the main plot a mystery.

To that end, the studio released a clip from the film today, featuring the title hero and Martian princess Dejah Thoris (X-Men Origins: Wolverine‘s Lynn Collins) as they first encounter a rabid horde of Warhoons, who appear to be under the influence of a conniving alien called Matai Shang (Mark Strong). Accompanying this clip is a featurette in which the stars of the film, along with director Andrew Stanton, sell the notion that without Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original ”John Carter of Mars” novels — the first, A Princess of Mars, is the main source for John Carter and was published 100 years ago — some of the biggest titles in modern science fiction would not exist, from Star Wars to Avatar. Check out both clips below: READ FULL STORY »

EW has confirmed that Jason Statham is producing a reboot of Brian de Palma’s 1986 action movie Heat, and he’s cast himself in the lead role. William Goldman penned the original Heat screenplay based on his novel of the same name. Statham will take over the role originated by Burt Reynolds of an ex-mercenary-turned-gambling addict working as a bodyguard in Las Vegas. Steven Chasman (Killer Elite, the Transporter series) will also produce. Shooting is scheduled to begin later this year in France. No costars or release date has been announced yet.

'Damsels in Distress' trailer: So this is what college could be like...

There are plenty of eye-opening revelations in the trailer for Damsels in Distress, which opens in limited release April 6. Like the fact that tap dancing is a much better cure for heartbreak than my preferred choice of a bottle of whiskey and a tub of cookie dough. There’s the fact that a new girl arrives on a college campus and is welcomed with open arms by a group of sensible and mature women. (I’m looking at you, House Bunny.) Or, that it really is possible to go to a bar and meet a guy while wearing a sweater set. Who knew? Filled with subtle humor and more geek eye candy than I can wrap my mind around (welcome back, Adam Brody!), the trailer for Damsels looks like a college-centered film that will actually require some brain power. In that case, I’m in. Watch the trailer after the jump. READ FULL STORY »
