Jennifer Aniston to get star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Jennifer-Aniston

It may not be as high an honor as the “hottest woman of all time” nod she received from Men’s Health last year, but Jennifer Aniston will be granted her very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next week. The former Friends star, whose new film Wanderlust opens next weekend, will receive her star on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce  maintains the Walk of Fame, and the price of sponsoring a new star is $30,000.

For her role on Friends as Rachel Green, Aniston received five Emmy nominations, two SAG Awards, and two Golden Globe nominations. She has since starred in numerous films, including Rumor Has It, The Good Girl, and The Break Up. Fun fact: Aniston’s godfather, actor Telly Savalas, received his Walk of Fame star in 1983.

News of 'Degrassi' star Neil Hope's 2007 death surfaces

Filed under: News, TV and tagged: In Memoriam

In a sad turn of events, Neil Hope, who played “Wheels” on the popular Canadian teen TV show Degrassi High from 1987-1991 is believed to have passed away over four years ago. A Facebook user named Tracy Northrup Hope, believed to be the actor’s sister-in-law, posted January 12, “It has been confirmed that Neil passed away Nov 25 2007. RIP You will always be in our hearts and always remembered. Now We all can be at peace. We miss you soo much !!!!xoxox.”

Hope died in 2007 of natural causes. His death had been kept private from the public at his family’s request.

Stephanie Cohen, Marketing and Communications Vice President for Degrassi‘s production company Epitome Pictures Inc., spoke with EW today. She could not confirm Northrup Hope’s relationship to the actor but said, “It would be horrible if this were some kind of hoax. I hope a reporter will [eventually] come to us with some kind of proof” if the news is true. Cohen met Hope when he appeared on Degrassi: The Next Generation in 2003 but after that, “[Neil] wasn’t in anyone’s lives.”

Linda Schuyler, who created the Degrassi series, her producing partner and Stephen Stohn also issued this statement: “Neil made an important contribution to our lives, to the lives of our television team, who are like a family to us, and indeed to the live of many Canadians and others around the world who were influenced by Neil and the roles he played starting from the early days of The Kids of Degrassi Street. His life was not an easy one, but the time he spent with us was a shining example of determination, hard work, and hopeful optimism, and he is sorely missed.”

Cohen said there are no plans for a Degrassi cast memorial at the present time. “We have been very deferential to what the family has wanted,” said Cohen. “We’re standing by to do whatever they feel is appropriate.” She added, “His fans are certainly coming forward through social media and memorializing him in an appropriate way, and we will certainly do the same.”

Kodak ends naming deal with Hollywood Theater

One big name that likely won’t be at this year’s Oscars: Kodak.

The Eastman Kodak Co. received court approval Wednesday to end its sponsorship deal with the Hollywood theater that is the venue for the Academy Awards.

Kodak signed a $74 million deal for naming rights to the theater in 2000. But the struggling photography company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month and wanted to end its contract for naming rights of the glamorous Los Angeles theater as it tries to improve its finances.

The company’s financial advisers said in court documents that the benefits of having the company’s name on the 3,300-seat erstwhile Kodak Theatre aren’t worth the contract’s cost.

Kodak confirmed Wednesday that a U.S. Bankruptcy judge approved its request to end the deal.

It’s unclear what name will be on the theater when the Oscars are awarded Feb. 26. Kodak said the termination is effective immediately and deferred questions on the theater’s name to the venue’s owners and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

CIM Group, which owns the theater, declined to comment on the decision or the future of the theater’s name. A representative for the academy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In addition to the theater’s name, its owners may have to make other tweaks.

The theater has a George Eastman Room, named after Kodak’s founder, which displays one of the nine Oscar statuettes that Kodak has been awarded through the years for its scientific and technical achievements and contributions to the industry, according to the theater’s website

Kodak, based in Rochester, N.Y., is a photography pioneer but has been battered by competition and has failed to keep up with the shift from film to digital technology. It has been in a roughly decade-long turnaround but filed for bankruptcy protection when it ran short on cash.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York handling the case also approved a $950 million debtor-in-possession financing for Kodak on Wednesday that allows it to operate normally during bankruptcy, while it tries to sell its collection of digital-imaging patents.

Kodak spokesman Christopher Veronda said the company will still have a presence at the awards show. He noted that seven of the nine films nominated for the Oscar for best picture were shot on Kodak film.

N.J. governor defends flag salute to Whitney Houston

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: Deaths, Legacy

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is strongly defending his decision to have flags lowered to half-staff Saturday for the late singer Whitney Houston amid criticism partly related to her history of substance abuse. Christie says he rejects the idea the New Jersey native “forfeited the good things that she did in her life” because of her substance abuse struggles.

The Republican governor said Wednesday disparaging emails and other messages have been coming into his office. He says critics are wrongly accusing him of treating Houston better than fallen soldiers. He has ordered flags flown at half-staff for all 31 fallen New Jersey soldiers and every fallen police officer during his time in office.

The cause of Houston’s death at a Beverly Hills, Calif., hotel over the weekend hasn’t been determined.

Zina Bethune, a 66-year-old actress and dancer, was fatally struck in a presumed double hit-and-run when she stopped to help an injured animal, reports the L.A. Times. Bethune was a famed ballerina, who taught dance to disabled children for the last 30 years. She herself had overcome diagnoses of scoliosis and lymphedema before training with George Balanchine and the New York City Ballet at age 14.

Though she went by Zina Feeley in everyday life, she made her professional name (Zina Bethune) in 1958 on The Guiding Light and had roles on Santa Barbara, Party of Five, and the 1960s medical drama The Doctors and the Nurses. She also choreographed for the 1987 TV series Nutcracker: Money, Madness & Murder.

Los Angeles police are investigating the incident, which took place just after midnight on Sunday. Bethune is believed to have stopped to check on an injured animal when a car going the opposite direction hit her and threw her across the intersection, when another car struck her and dragged her 200 yards. The blows resulted in severe head injuries, and Bethune was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither of the drivers who struck Bethune have been formally identified.
