Future Communicators will be S60 based. Series 80 plaftorm won't be further developed. That's what I've heard from a well informed source. No further details at this point but the information source is fully reliable.

This most likely means we are going to see an S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (or 3) with the extra functionality required by communicator users. S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 has been discussed in this thread. The S60 3rd Edition does already support scalable user interfaces.

Well, actually, it doesn't mean that there are any new 'commies' in the making. It only means that Nokia decided not to further develop the S80 platform and base future Communicators on the S60 platform. But I don't know if it means that they already work on some new Communicators or that they just made a decision.

Mike,
Do you think it will stay with the same CPU and hardware? or the only change is going to be done is upgrading to Symbian OS 9.3 and use S60 3rd platform?

why would they bother. They have no interest in you using your phone for any period of time longer than 2 years.

The new Communicator will surely be an UMTS phone and I'd expect other changes as well. But only time will tell.

No keyboard? Small keyboard?
Who told you that the next Communicator will have no keyboard?
S60 3rd Edition platform supports many different screen sizes and many different input methods, including a full QWERTY keyboard. It's small in E61 but can be shaped/sized differently - the size and shape of a keyboard doesn't depend on the operating system.

I think as the feature list of S60 grows it doesn't make sense to have a Series 80 or 90. By having one Series you can make that one much better by having more resources put into it, plus more apps and less work for devs making apps to support more devices.
I suspect one day as Smartphones eventually kill off dumb phones, Series 40 will die off too. That might be a long long time coming thought of course.

A question, why change to s60, I mean whats wrong with the current version s80.
I know it makes sense to be using ONE platform, less hassle/support/development costs. But what does s60 offer that s80 doesnt. Does anybody have a side by side comparison of the two versions.
Can thr s60 do all the s80 can and vice versa?
