News - MythTV Is Now Forked As Torc

Well this is interesting news.  It appears that one of the MythTV developers is splitting off the MythTV project with his own branch of code.  It look like the idea is to drop a lot of the legacy support in order to modernize the project more quickly and easily.  One of the things that I liked about MythTV is the ability to run it on older hardware.  At one point I had a MythTV server with three analog tuners running on a Pentium II 400MHz CPU. I thought that was impressive.  However, that was a number of years ago and at this point I have to say that I fully support the desire to drop support of older systems in order to bring in new features and bling.  It will be interesting to see where this project goes and I will be sure to keep an eye on it.

From an anonymous Phoronix reader I received the following message:

News - New Plugin for Using a Ceton InfiniTV 4 Tuner with XBMC

XBMC Ceton

It is no secret that we like the Ceton InfiniTV 4 CableCARD tuner around here or that we are always looking for new and interesting ways to make use of our favorite media front-ends such as XBMC. Thanks to mcheng89 in the XBMC forums, we can now make use of the Ceton InfiniTV 4 in XBMC. He has put together a modified version of the PsuedoTV plugin that allows XBMC to tune into the InfiniTV 4 with a little help from VLC. By building on PsuedoTV, the plugin includes a customizable EPG. It is not a complete DVR solution, but it is an interesting option for tapping into live TV from XBMC and especially from XBMC-compatible devices such as the Apple TV.

Some clever hacks over on the XBMC forums have managed to get Ceton’s infiniTV 4 working with XBMC. With the plugin you can stream video from Ceton tuner, share a tuner with multiple clients, stream TV over the Internet and using PseudoTV you can get a user interface to control it.

News - Microsoft Releases Windows Home Server 2011 Update Rollup 2

WHS 2011Microsoft has released Update Rollup 2 for Windows Home Server 2011. The new update rollup compiles a host of bug fixes and system updates. A number of the fixes are geared towared localized installations and there is a fix for OS X Lion, though there is still work to do on that platform as the update rollup's documentation lists three known problems still awaiting fixes for the OS X Lion Client. Update Rollup 2 also fixes the problem of music file tags being overwritten by the server, an issue that hit me personally and ruined the tags on several thousand songs before I discovered the problem. Finally, Issue 14 caught my eye. The language is vague, but the reference to the new Windows client sounds like a fix was needed to correct an issue with the client connector on Windows 8.

The fixes include disabling of the Media Streaming Metadata Synchronizer scheduled task which caused music metadata to be overwritten without consent. The task can now be switched on if desired in the Windows Home Server 2011 Dashboard. Also resolved is a problem downloading files using an Android device via Remote Web Access, and an issue uploading files from iOS devices.

News - Rumor: New Apple TV and 1080p iTunes Store Content Inbound

Way back in November, quiet rumors began to circulate that there might be a new Apple TV on the way. The primary evidence was that some retailers had begun to sell the Apple TV for less than Apple's MSRP. Since then, the denizens of the Interwebs have been preoccupied with whipping themselves into a frenzy about the iPad 3 and the mythical iTV. With the iPad 3 announcement now expected in early March, Apple rumormongers have evidently decided to look around and see if there is any evidence that Apple might be planning to offer up a side dish and have alit on the iTunes Store and the Apple TV. The latest rumors suggest that Apple will launch 1080p content for the iTunes Store. If the iPad 3's Retina Display pans out, then this one seems like a near certainty at some point in the near future. Even on a 10" screen, 720p content on a 2048 x 1536 LCD panel is less than ideal. The Apple TV has been caught up in this round of rumors not only because a refreshed unit would also benefit from 1080p content, but because there is a whole bunch of circumstantial evidence that the second generation Apple TV, now being listed by some retailers as the 2010 model, is in short supply in the retail channel.

Apple TV

In addition to the expected announcement of the iPad 3 at a media event in early March, new rumors and speculation suggest that we could see a revised Apple TV alongside the new tablet. Shortages of the current Apple TV and the possibility of 1080p iTunes content are fueling the refresh rumors.

News - Aereo Looking to Bring Live TV into the Cloud

Aereo

It would seem that everyone is looking for a way to bring live TV to the Internet. BitTorrent would like to subsume live TV into the Internet with its new P2P technology, while providers like Time Warner Cable are deploying live streams of their standard broadcasts to as many devices as possible as quickly as possible. Now media conglomerate IAC is helping to launch a start-up called Aereo. Aereo has a plan to turn live TV into a cloud app with its new service. Aereo's plan is to deploy refrigerator-sized units packed with hundreds of dime-sized antennas, one antenna per subscriber. The signal received by each antenna is streamed to its assigned subscriber for playback via an HTML5-based website, making the service compatible with just about any device or computer. The interface includes a program guide and the service not only streams live OTA broadcasts, but also serves as a dual tuner DVR with 40 hours of storage. At $12 a month it should be competitive with the bare-bones basic tier service offered by most cable companies, though obviously far more flexible. At the moment, most of the streaming apps that cable companies have deployed only work on a subscriber's home network, whereas the whole point of Aereo's service to remove such restrictions. It seems impossible for Aereo to avoid some sort of legal challenge from broadcasters and one has to wonder if there are enough people interested in a service that only provides access to OTA broadcasts to sustain a roll-out beyond the intial launch in New York City. That being said, IAC Chairman, Barry Diller, has put his full weight behind Aereos, and as the mastermind behind the Fox Broadcasting Company and USA Broadcasting, he does know a thing or two about disrupting the status quo of TV broadcasting.

Barry Diller always enjoys riling the media industry from which he sprang. A few minutes ago at a press conference at IAC headquarters in New York City, Diller introduced a new startup IAC is backing called Aereo that is building a DVR in the cloud that broadcasts live TV to your iPad, computer, or TV.  Diller has always believed that Internet TV would be a healthy counterweight to “media concentration†as media companies increasingly want “to protect that closed system.â€

Review - ARCTIC Audio Relay - DLNA Audio Renderer

ARCTICMy first exposure to DLNA devices was lacking. It was the clunky standard that everyone “supported†in their own way, but no one really did well enough to call “workingâ€. Fortunately it has slowly evolved on both the device and software layers to the place we are today, where DLNA is actually useful for many things like control and media playback on our TVs and mobile devices. The standard still requires some growth (mostly around synchronized playback) to take over the whole home audio space, but where that is not a requirement audio Digital Media Renderers (DMR) like the $132.60 ARCTIC Audio Relay we will review today can provide an excellent solution to single point music distribution within the home.

News - Time Warner Cable Launches Live TV Streaming for the Desktop

Time Warner Cable has, like most of the major cable providers, been working diligently to bring their services to subscribers' mobile devices by launching apps for controlling settop boxes, managing DVRs, streaming VOD content and, increasingly, streaming live TV. Live TV streaming for Android apps seems to be stalled while Ice Cream Sandwich moves into the market, but TWC's developers aren't wasting time looking for new platforms to join the iOS version of TWC TV. The company has launched a beta version of TWC TV for the desktop. The desktop version will be browser-based and utilize a Silverlight-player. Like the iOS apps, the desktop version of TWC TV offers DVR management and streaming video so long as the subscriber is on their home network, and also offers options for seelcting from the program guide to play on the PC or to turn on and control the settop box for viewing on the television.

TWC TV Desktop

After expanding its live TV streaming from iPads to iPhones, Time Warner Cable is going in the other direction and offering the service on PCs. The PC version of TWC TV launched today in beta -- still no word on streaming to Android devices or HDTVs yet -- but the Silverlight player will work on Windows and OS X, in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Chrome.

News - Hulu Premieres "Battleground", Netflix Preps "Orange is the New Black"

Battleground and Orange is the New Black

It's been a busy month for streaming media fans looking for something new. Netflix launched their first original series, Lilyhammer, earlier this month, and this week Hulu premiered their first original scripted show, Battleground. While Netflix dropped the entire first season of Lilyhammer at one time, Hulu likes to parcel its shows out gradually. New episodes of Battleground will be available on Hulu and Hulu Plus every Tuesday for its entire 13 episode run.

Hulu launched its first original scripted series Battleground Monday night, just one week after Netflix started its foray into original programming with Lilyhammer.

Even as Lilyhammer and Battleground face-off, Netflix is reportedly moving ahead with another new series. Netflix is expected to announce that it has ordered 13 episodes of its own comedy, Orange is the New Black. Although Netflix does have some other original content coming down the pipe, this will be only the second series after Lilyhammer to be completely financed by Netflix. Both companies are betting big on original content going forward. Early reviews on Lilyhammer and Battleground have generally been quick to pounce on the idea that HBO and Showtime don't have much to worry about. Just keep in mind that early HBO shows such as Tanner '88 and Dream On weren't exactly greeted as the second coming of television either.

The company has ordered 13 episodes of Orange is the New Black, a comedy from Jenji Kohan, the creator of Showtimes’s Weeds. The show is based on the memoir of a communications exec who served time for drug charges in a women’s prison.

**This article has been amended. "Lilyhammer" was produced by Rubicon TV AS for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. Netflix financed part of the production.**

News - VideoLAN Unleashes VLC 2.0 Release Candidate for PCs, Android and iOS Coming Soon

VLC 2.0VLC is the Swiss Army knife of media players, capable of playing just about every format one can think of. It has even added the ability to play unencrypted Blu-ray movies, but that bit of functionality had been limited to those intrepid souls who were willing to run the VLC nightly builds. For those not interested in nightly builds, fear not, for VideoLAN has announced that the first release candidate for VLC 2.0 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The Mac version is evidently getting the most obvious overhaul with a completely redesigned UI, but it will not come with the experimental Blu-ray support. Linux and Windows updates will be primarily under the hood. VideoLAN is reportedly also prepping versions of VLC 2.0 for Android and iOS. The decision to bring VLC 2.0 to iOS is somewhat surprising given the difficulties that arose the last time VideoLAN submitted a VLC app, but hopefully this time the VLC team has their GPL ducks in a row.

VideoLAN has announced VLC 2.0 and the first release candidate is available to the public today. The biggest changes are in the OS X version but there are a few interesting changes in the Windows version as well, such as a 64-bit version and support for multiple video files inside RAR archives.

News - Apple Leads the Way as Consumer Electronics Spending Hits $144B in 2011

The holidays have come and gone, but if your wallet is still feeling a little light, there is a good chance it's because you were one of the folks splurging on consumer electronics last year. NPD has been busy crunching sales numbers and is reporting that consumer electronics sales generated $144B last year. This actually down 0.5% from 2010, and indeed, most of the categories that NPD tracked were down overall. The one category to post big gains was tablets/e-readers. It makes sense then that, of the top CE brands, the only company to post a sales increase was Apple. That's two years in a row for Apple, and judging by the hoopla surrounding the impending iPad3 announcement, the company seems well-positioned to go for the three-peat. Perhaps the most interesting numbers involve the retail channels. Few people would be surprised to hear that B&M stores are falling and online stores are rising, but to see Best Buy at the top of the chain and Amazon tied with Staples for fourth? How in the world is Staples holding its own against Amazon in consumer electronics sales?

NPD CE Sales 2011

Consumer electronics sales fell half a percent in 2011, generating $144 billion, NPD reports. Computers, televisions, tablets/e-readers, mobile phones and video game hardware commanded nearly 60% of those sales. Notebooks and desktops alone represented $28 billion (almost 20%), a decrease of 3% from 2010, while tablets/e-readers doubled sales to $15 billion last year, growing faster than any other category.

News - SIGMA DESIGNS SMP8910 Not Suspended

SIGMA DESIGNS SMP8910Given the positive conversation I had with SIGMA DESIGNS at CES I was a little surprised to see a rumor floating around that the SMP8910 had been suspended. If true, this would be a major setback for those waiting for Dune HD's Pro media player so I fired off an email to find out.

Fortunately, my contact at SIGMA was able to confirm that the 8910 has no been suspended but said nothing beyond that - so I guess we can safely go back to waiting. Patiently.

News - Kinect for Media Center Released

With the release of Kinect for Windows we are starting to see add-ins like Kinect for Media Center become official. Part of the thing about Kinect for Windows is that it includes the licensing needed for developers to create apps that can take advantage of the platform. While it is unfortunate that end users need to fork over additional money for a new Kinect sensor those who want hands free control for their Media Center PC will need to make the switch.

The add-in is going for $6.99, and as mentioned will require the Kinect for Windows sensor (not the Xbox version). Head over to the developers page to get the full rundown of features.

Controlling Windows Media Center from the sofa without a remote is something that just sound cool so using Kinect sounds a really good idea. Last year there was a beta for Kinect for Media Center and now thanks to the commercial released of Kinect for Windows the final version is out.

With the Kinect you can use hand gestures and voice commands to control Windows Media Center and then control the addins that run on it including Netflix, My Movies and Media Browser. The developer says that that the addin has been designed so that audio coming from a TV show or music can’t trigger a voice command and that there are lots of configuration settings so you can get it working the best way for you.

News - Samsung's 55" OLED TV Coming to the UK This Spring

Samsung was showing off a 55" OLED TV at CES this year. At the time, Samsung was not giving any release dates, but they were aiming for the second half of the year. Well, Samsung still isn't giving a date, but evidently folks in the UK are going to be getting Samsung's OLED beauty this spring. Samsung also isn't giving any prices, though one can assume that it will be lofty. The TV is expected to ship with the full range of Smart TV features and with Samsung's new active 3D technology. It will be interesting to see if Samsung is able to gain some traction this year with their new big screen OLED TVs given how anticipated the technology has been in this size range.

Samsung OLED 55

A recent piece of news stemming from CNET claims that Samsung is preparing to ship its highly-anticipated flagship 55-inch 'Super' OLED HDTV this Spring. Unfortunately, the release will be limited to those lucky few residents in the United Kingdom with plenty of saved-up cash ready to expend.

News - BitTorrent Gunning for Live TV with BitTorrent Live

Bram Cohen

BitTorrent creator Bram Cohen took to the stage at the SF MusicTech Summit on Monday to show off his P2P live streaming protocol, BitTorrent Live. The concept is simple. By using BitTorrent Live, any content provider can stream any live event via the Internet on the cheap with minimal latency. By shifting the distribution of the stream to the P2P audience, the content provider can ditch many of the upfront server and bandwidth costs that might make live-streaming an event too expensive. BitTorrent Inc. is still working on an SDK and isn't ready to announce any deals, or really even talk about monetization at all at this point, but Bram Cohen certainly has some lofty goals if he is serious about killing off television. For now, there is always the beta. In the short term, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the larger podcast networks such as Revision 3 give BitTorrent Live a shot, and CDNs such as Ustream and BitGravity should be keeping an eye on what Cohen and company do next.

BitTorrent inventor Bram Cohen demoed his P2P live streaming protocol at the San Francisco MusicTech Summit on Monday, which he said could potentially stream live video to millions of computers with no central infrastructure. Cohen said that the protocol could potentially be used for video conferencing, live streams of video game tournaments or even live sports events. “My goal here is to kill off television,†he joked.
