Pretty great news for a former Ugly Betty star: Ana Ortiz is poised to return to ABC, having been cast in Marc Cherry’s pilot Devious Maids. EW has confirmed that Ortiz has been cast as one of four maids “with ambition and dreams of their own” who work for some of the richest families in Beverly Hills. (Deadline first reported the news.) Dania Ramirez is also set to star in the pilot; Ortiz plays Marisol, a woman with a college degree and a secret reason for wanting to work in the house-cleaning industry.

On the same network, Anthony LaPaglia has been cast in the drama pilot Americana, about a fashion designer who welcomes a newbie into his family and label. LaPaglia previously starred in CBS’ Without A Trace.

CBS dispatched its reality thug Undercover Boss to Fridays to show rivals who is, er, boss.

Moving over from Sunday nights, Boss (10.7 million viewers, 2.4 adults 18-49 rating) was easily Friday’s top-rated broadcast show, putting a beat down on ABC’s recently improving Shark Tank (5.7 million, 1.5), which fell 17 percent from last week’s season high. On its other flank, Boss also crushed Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares (3.1 million, 1.3).

The 8 p.m. Boss gave a lead in to CBS’ struggling freshman drama A Gifted Man (9.5 million, 1.5), now moved to 9 p.m. and tying CSI: NY‘s average in the spot. Though Gifted was 25 percent higher than the show’s average, the medical drama is considered a long-shot to to earn a second season.

ABC managed to edge out CBS to win the night, however, thanks to 20/20 devoting two hours to Whitney Houston (7.9 million, 2.0). Also Friday: Fox’s Fringe (3 million, 1.1) was unchanged in the demo. CBS’ Blue Bloods (10.6 million, 1.6) was OK. Ratings for The CW’s Nikta (1.6 million, 0.6) and Supernatural (1.7 million, 0.7) were pretty standard.

Five reasons why Maksim Chermkovskiy should stay on 'Dancing with the Stars'

Filed under: TV and tagged: Dancing With the Stars, Reality TV

It’s crossed the minds of every Dancing with the Stars fan, especially over the last two seasons: Is it time for Maksim Chermkovskiy to go?

He certainly didn’t endear himself to the judges last season when he made arrogant quips to Len Goodman about how the elder statesman should leave the ballroom — all while claiming that “this is my show, you know.†Even some fans turned on the hot-headed Ukrainian-American when he was filmed striking partner Hope Solo during a rehearsal. An exasperated Solo responded by saying, “would you stop being you?â€

Chermkovskiy has also hinted in seasons past that maybe the time has come to search for greener pastures (or better partners), which has fueled speculation that maybe his days on the show are numbered. So what will happen come March 19? As is usually the case, the DWTS producers won’t reveal which pros will return for the 14th (!!) season until they announce the latest round of celebrities. (That happens Feb. 28 on Good Morning America.).  Since we can’t wait until then, we’ve decided to give five reasons why we’d like to see Maks stay for as long as the show lasts. And the reasons are…

1. Because he’s (almost) an original member of the show. Viewers love continuity, and they get that from Chermkovskiy, who joined DWTS in season two as the pro assigned to Tia Carrere. They came in sixth place (but his long hair deserved a special prize of its own).

Team Adam is in good shape. Or so says team member and former mouseketeer Tony Lucca, who audiences watched secure a spot on the Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine’s team on The Voice earlier this month.

As blind auditions continue and the judges keep on building their teams of eight, Lucca took advantage of some of his downtime to stop by EW for a performance of his original song “Death of Me” and size up his competition, which comes courtesy of fellow mentors Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, and Cee Lo Green. 'The Vampire Diaries' star Daniel Gillies talks last night's episode, and what's next for Elijah and Elena

Fans were rendered speechless in the final moment’s of last week’s installment of The Vampire Diaries, when Original Mama Esther cast a spell that bound all of her children together, with the ultimate intention of killing them. To be fair, her drastic actions were not completely unwarranted — her children are a scheming, murdering group of ancient vampires who treat human beings like their silly little playthings. The lone, sensitive standout, and the only offspring to give Esther a bit of pause, was Elijah (Daniel Gillies).

Unfortunately for Elijah, last night was a full moon — the celestial event Mama Esther needed to cast her wicked spell. EW caught up with Gillies after last night’s do-or-die episode, “All My Children,” to discuss last night’s action and speculate on what’s next. SPOILERS AHEAD! READ FULL STORY »

Executive producer Mark Schwahn wanted Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) to return to One Tree Hill on Feb. 22 for the CW show’s last season, but the homecoming had to feel organic. Fortunately, the storyline presented a perfect opportunity: The husband of Lucas’ longtime buddy Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) is missing, So she’d naturally turn to Lucas for a little support. “It’s a nice little gift for fans who want to see him one last time,†Schwahn says.

Janet Jackson considering 'X Factor' gig?

Less than a week after X Factor creator/judge Simon Cowell admitted he had considered Whitney Houston for the show prior to her death, another diva has entered the fray. Reports have emerged that Janet Jackson may be taking one of the seats Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger vacated earlier this year. Jackson has neither issued a confirmation nor denial yet, but she is scheduled to appear on Monday’s episode of Anderson and, from the looks of a preview, doesn’t seem closed off to the possibility.

According to People, CNN, and Billboard, when host Anderson Cooper broached the subject, Jackson responded obliquely, “No, I am not [currently a judge on The X Factor], but that’s all I really think I should say.” Cooper had but one word: “Intriguing.” Sources close to the singer have told EW that Jackson would like to join the show as a judge, though they cannot confirm whether there is a deal in the works or currently in place.

Below, try to deconstruct Jackson’s coy giggle in the preview for Monday’s episode of Anderson. READ FULL STORY »

Huge Good Wife news: Matthew Perry is joining the CBS legal drama in a recurring role.

The Friends star will play an attorney from Chicago named Mike who’s heading up a blue-ribbon panel in charge of investigating a police shooting. While Mike is described as “ultra-charming,” he won’t have an easy time winning over Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), who thinks his interest is more political than truth-seeking.

“No one skates as effortlessly between drama and comedy as Matthew Perry, so we’re especially thrilled to have him on the show,” Good Wife co-creators and exec producers Robert and Michelle King told EW in a statement. “We’re huge, huge fans, and are nearly giddy over what he can do with the role.” READ FULL STORY »

'Big Bang' beats 'Idol' at 8 but Fox rules night

Filed under: TV and tagged: American Idol, The Big Bang Theory, TV Ratings

Everyone taking a winter vacay or something? Viewership has been oddly soft this week for broadcast TV: The Big Four were either down or flat versus last week, according to early results. Though American Idol helped Fox to win Thursday among adults 18-49 (5.0 rating/13 share) and viewers (16.5 million), the show was still down 14 percent in the demo versus last week.

Idol still dominated among adults 25-54 and teens.

CBS came in second for the night with a 3.3/9 in the demo and 13.3 million viewers. Big Bang Theory beat Idol in the first half-hour among 18-49 (5.0/15 versus 4.6/13) and viewers (15.5 million versus 15 million), but it was still down 11 percent from last week. Rob! earned a 3.2/9, down 3 percent from last week, and 10.9 million, followed by Person of Interest (2.9/7, down 12 percent from last week, and 13.2 million) and The Mentalist (2.8/7, down 7 percent from last week, and 13.6 million).

ABC was third in the demo with a 2.4/6, with Wipeout earning a 1.5/4, which tied its season low, and 5.1 million, followed by Grey’s Anatomy (3.1/8, down 23 percent, and 8.1 million) and Private Practice (2.6/7, up 8 percent from last week, and 7 million). NBC hobbled in fourth place, with 30 Rock earning a 1.4/4, down 13 percent from last week, and 3.6 million, followed by Parks and Recreation (1.7/5, flat, 3.5 million), The Office (2.2/6, down 12 percent to a series low, and 4.3 million),  and Up All Night (1.5/4, down 12 percent to a series low, 3 million). That was a repeat of Grimm.
