I'm trying to figure out a way to connect an unused laptop to my parents kitchen hdtv, but my dad didn't like the last implementation as it took too much counter space (well, by too much I mean 15 diagonal inches of counter space they never use, but meh). So I want to connect it in such a way where the laptop is hidden. There are cabinets above and below, but I would still need the power brick and video cable coming through somewhere and that would be ugly. Any ideas?

Good grief Youtubes new 200 character limit sucks. How do you relay information of any value with so few words? Its just going to make it more of a troll fest over there. #whitenoise (Edit comment)

Youtube needs a good commenting system. A system where noobs need to be approved by experienced commenters. A system where being stupid is punishable by bans and where being intelligent is rewarded by a symbol and featured comments.

Oh, wait... #whitenoise

(Edit comment)
A Giz style commenting system would be an epic improvement for Youtube, minus the loss of the ability to reply to short comments. Heck, I think YT should have a short comment limit rather than a max character limit. #whitenoise (Edit comment)

I definitely agree on the minimum lenght limit. There's a sweet spot where it would discourage trolls from spamming, while not being too restrictive for those who just want to show their appreciation.

(As long as it is set up so to ignore spaces, repeated letters and stuff like that.) #whitenoise

I hate anamorphic widescreen format DVDs so much that I often find myself staring in disgust at the fish-eye distortion on the edges of the screen instead of watching the actual movie.

Is there any way around this to force letterboxing and preserve the original widescreen aspect? Is anamorphic widescreen a mode that the DVD is forcing my player to do (which could possibly be turned off) or is that how the actual DVD content is formatted upon manufacture?

My non-blu-ray DVD player is getting rather long in the tooth ('02 Denon DVM-4800) and I would love to replace it with a blu-ray that could banish anamorphic widescreen forever. #whitenoise

That was awesome, Recess was my favorite. #whitenoise (Edit comment)

yea its a tough call. I'd vote recess over pepper ann but either way 90s saturday cartoons were the best. I feel bad for kids today who watch stupid crap like this. its just pathetic. #whitenoise (Edit comment)
Wow....bringing back memories... #whitenoise (Edit comment)
I never liked Recess and Pepper Ann. Then again, they were at the end of my childhood. I do think Adventure Time is pretty good, though. (Edit comment)

I got way too excited when I woke up to a star this morning. After many years, I'm finally a part of the club. #whitenoise (Edit comment)
Congrats! Happened to me a few weeks ago, great feeling :) #whitenoise (Edit comment)

Now I'm jealous.

I think I have a star on Gawker,, though not a Gizmodo one and not a Kotaku one.
Gizmodo-stars are waay cooler than all the other stars though, so congratulations dude!

Edit: I just noticed a star next to my name. Well this is interesting. I wonder for how long I've had that one. What a lovely surprise. Yay! I'm also in the club.

Yeah, I just noticed so and wrote an addition to my previous comment.
Still a great surprise for me :D #whitenoise (Edit comment)

I'm thinking about buying firstnamelastname.com to use as an email address domain. It's only 10$ per year. Should I? I'm looking for an internship as a freshman computer engineering student, and I would just paste this on my resume as my contact email. The thing I'm not sure about is how the employers would see it... do you think it would impress them positively or just give a negative impression?

I'm literally one click away from registering it (on eNom, NOT on GoDaddy - I'm glad Google gives us the choice), so any input is appreciated :) #whitenoise

(Edit comment)
I should add: I'm not buying "firstnamelastname.com". I'm buying "lewis" "the eighty-second" .com. #whitenoise (Edit comment)
I'd go a step further and use the website as a sort of online resume of sorts. Use it to show off your computer engineering abilities (if that's even applicable, I'll admit I don't really know what a computer engineer does.) #whitenoise (Edit comment)

That's a great idea. Right now I don't have much to showcase, as I'm still learning programming techniques, but I could definitely write some code and upload it there. Maybe not this year, but definitely next year.

The hardware design part is a bit more complicated to upload though ;) But yeah, that seems like a good plan. Thanks :) #whitenoise

(Edit comment)

Maybe take on a few hardware design projects this year and briefly document them on the site? I wouldn't make it too bloggy though, just a paragraph or so. This is what we set out to do, this is what we accomplished, small photo or two.

The other plus side to making it a content website as opposed to just an email server:
I forget where I read it (I wanna say lifehacker) but apparently recruiters are starting to google potential hires, so a website with your name on it is always good.

Do it. Getting contacting you on your own email system looks far more professional than gmail or hotmail. You can even use Google apps to host the email once you have bought it. Their online email system always seems to be better than a registrars webmail #whitenoise (Edit comment)
I was actually going to buy it directly trough Google. It seems far less complicated. I think I'll do it, after all for 10 bucks a year it is dirt cheap. #whitenoise (Edit comment)

Trying to brick/hack a windows phone, (not WP7) it is a kin twom, something I had for a while just laying around. I been trying to mess with it and see if there is anything I can do to it. However the first major problem is MSFT used an on board memory chip. So when plugged into computer it auto-launches zune media player. So I tried not allowing it to auto-launch zune, (success) however now I've been trying to access the onboard memory and try to find the OS that it is running. (not yet accomplished.) Is anyone familiar with this device or one similar? Or any ideas on how to hack this phone?

I'm going to say if XDA can't hack it, its pretty damn hard to.

[forum.xda-developers.com] .

Also I'm just impressed someone on here has one of those, lol #whitenoise

Thanks for the link! #whitenoise (Edit comment)

Yeah... good luck with that...

Lotta potential these Kin phones, but MS aborted them post-birth, which is as messed up as the imagery makes it seem (sorry).

I remember I kinda followed the "development" on XDA a while ago because I was genuinely interested if anything was ever going to get done with these devices (my sister and brother have a One and Two, I got WinMo :) but it was just terrible seeing absolutely zero progress being made.

I want to have sympathy for MS, and I do like the company and their products generally, but I have no sympathy for them concerning the Kin. It was a major bitch move and entirely disgraceful. This was a major bitch-slap to consumers, and that really bothers me.
They f*cked up and didn't even say sorry.

They could have - no, the should have - released the drivers and opened up the ROM to developers to at least show consumers that they did have a heart. It didn't happen, and after all this time and all the effort put into it, I don't think you are going to get anywhere with it. Accept it as it is.

p.s. I hope you aren't actually trying to brick your phone... that won't accomplish much if you stop it from working altogether... #whitenoise

(Edit comment)

Thanks for the insight. Actually I have worked around the bricking on other phones. Like if it gets bricked I can save it from that with some programs I have. In theory, it goes like this: If and only if i can brick the phone, this means I had or have access to the onboard memory which essentially means I have access to the OS. Then once having access to the OS I could theoretically load a new OS on to the phone. Then once the new OS is on the phone I can customize and work out a functional and well operated OS that works with this phone. The whole thing I am trying to do now is access the on-board memory so that the computer does not recognize it as a "zune" player device and auto-boot the zune launcher.

Theoretically this works lol. not so much when its actually trying to be done. #whitenoise

(Edit comment)

Once again, good luck.

I really do hope you succeed, but you must realize that the odds are stacked against you.

Also, you don't have drivers for the phone, and if I recall, other Kin hackers did not have any success getting anything from NVidia.

Anyhow, don't let me dissuade you from trying. I hope you do make progress. MS should not have done this to its customers in the first place, but maybe it was all destiny... they did it to challenge you and you are destined to make a major breakthrough with the phone. #whitenoise
