Northern California Wanderings

One of my favorite places to head for on a day off is Santa Cruz, CA. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to get there from Hayward. It is a great place to take kids, especially during the summer break when it’s hot outside and there’s nothing going on closer to home.

The Boardwalk (http://beachboardwalk.com/) is open daily after Memorial Day and through Labor Day Weekend. The beach is usually very crowded during the summer months, but never to the point that you can’t find a spot of your own. There are mini showers to wash of the sand once you’re ready to hit the boardwalk for some rides, food and arcade games.

Think old-fashioned fun like a ferris wheel, haunted house, deep fried Twinkies and corn dogs, and a dime toss. The best ride of all? The merry-go-round (and make sure to grab a horse on the outer rim). If you manage to snag the coveted outer-ring horses, you’ll have a shot at grabbing the metal rings that slide down a chute. Once you have a ring, throw it at the clown on the back wall and try to make it in the clown’s mouth. You’ll set off the ringer if you do and you’ll have bragging rights all day long.

If you’re tired of being out in the sun, or are looking for a little more upscale entertainment, head towards downtown (http://www.downtownsantacruz.com/index.php) for shopping, an amazing bookstore, Bookshop Santa Cruz (http://www.bookshopsantacruz.com/) and coffee shops, restaurants and a movie theater. For those looking for live music, check out the Catalyst Night club right in downtown on Pacific Avenue (catalystclub.com).

Valentine Blog Honors the Dog

Happy Valentines’s Day!

Cosmo and Uggie (courtesy of the Huffington Post)

If you are a dog lover, you might agree that 2012’s Academy Award program should feature a Year of the Dog theme—can’t remember so many great canine performances in films nominated in one year. The film Beginners (actually a 2010 film) features a plucky performance by Arthur the dog (played by Cosmo the terrier): actor Christopher Plummer has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for his work in Beginners.  In the silent film The Artist, there’s an engaging performance by The Dog (played by Uggie the terrier): French actor Jean Dujardin is up for Best Actor in The Artist (it has also been nominated in several other categories, including Best Picture).  The Adventures of Tintin(which should have been nominated in the Animated Feature Film category but is only up for the Best Original Score category) features Tintin’s canine companion, Snowy the terrier. All the dogs were so good, it makes you think there should be a Best Performance by a Canine category (even if one of them was animated!)

(By the way, the Westminster Kennel Club will be broadcasting day 2 of the dog show February 14!)

The Beatles on Ed Sullivan

The American television premiere of The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show happened on February 9th, 1964. There was a big build up of excitement about the Beatles coming across the pond to the United States. Radio stations had been playing Beatles music and newspapers and magazines ran stories about the musical group before their first live appearance on American television. There were only 728 audience members present in the studio, but over 73 million Americans in more than 22 million homes tuned in that evening to get their first glimpse of the mop-haired quartet performing. So many people watched the Sullivan Show that night that it was rumored that crime rates fell across the country from 8pm to 9pm. It was a defining moment in many viewers memories and a milestone moment in pop culture. The “youngsters” as Sullivan referred to them were an immediate sensation and ushered in the British invasion on the American music scene. Of course they went on to be incredibly successfull and have remained one of the most popular and beloved musical groups in the world. Watch their American premiere below:

Emotional Intelligence (EI)

Daniel Goleman: Emotional intelligence refers to how well we handle ourselves and our relationships, the 4 domains.  Self-awareness, knowing what we’re feeling, why we’re feeling it, which is a basis of, for example, good intuition, good decision-making.  Also, it’s a moral compass.  Say, in part, is self-management, which means handling your distressing emotions in effective ways so that they don’t cripple you, they don’t get in the way of what you’re doing, and yet, attuning them… to them when you need to so that you learn what you must. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce is a short film that has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Animated Short Category for 2012.  Give yourselves 15 minutes to watch it—it’s well worth it:

It’s one of those works which should be enjoyed by every book-lover.  (The book of the same name by Willam Joyce will be coming out July, 2012).

This song in my head!

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) created Peter Rabbit and his friends in tales she wrote and illustrated.  The movie Miss Potter shows the author’s struggle to escape her parents’ designs for her, her efforts to introduce her literary creations to the world, and finally her success in finding a life of her own.  Just recently I was able to watch the entire movie on DVD.  In one scene, their relationship apparently developing beyond the business of publishing children’s books, Mr. Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor) and Miss Potter (Renee Zellweger) are together alone for the very first time as Miss Potter’s chaperone nods drowsily just outside the room’s open door.  Mr. Warne picks up a music box, hears its music and begins to sing.  Long after I saw this scene unfold and the movie’s credits had stopped rolling, I kept hearing the song in my head.  Listen to McGregor’s “Let Me Teach You How to Danceâ€, hear Katie Melua’s moving “When You Taught Me How to Danceâ€, and don’t be surprised if, like me, you find yourself still humming the melody after you’ve left this page.

Russell Investments 2012 Market Outlook

Low-return expectations will require investors to pay attention to details

In 2012, we anticipate another volatile year. Corporate earnings are set to slow, yet modest profit growth will likely balance the scales on the positive side. Overseas, a European recession seems inevitable, yet we believe Europe’s leaders will act to prevent financial collapse. Regional diversification will need to be firmly in place, as the economic center of gravity continues to shift eastward because of China and emerging markets. As traditional investments remain flat, alternatives will matter more than ever.

Making gains this year will require an active, global, multi-strategy approach. Identifying outperforming managers in every sector and region will count more than ever. In a world of increased volatility and lower returns, a dynamic approach to investing to take advantage of opportunities will increasingly become the norm for successful investors. Every basis point earned in a 2012 portfolio will need to be well-protected through rigorous, efficient trading and implementation actions. While growth is possible this year, it won’t come easy.

Macbeth and Lady Macbeth photo from Shakespeare On TourToday at 2 p.m. young people age 7 and up will have the chance to experience the drama of Shakespeare’s Macbeth presented by The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival.  You will need to get a free ticket in the Children’s Department beginning at 1:45 p.m. if you wish to attend.  This is a great opportunity to learn about this play in a shorter format.  The play is performed by professional actors.

The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival performs free Shakespeare plays around the Bay Area during the summer.  This coming summer they will be performing HenryV.  They also offer Shakespeare Camps for kids in different locations, and tour schools presenting Shakespeare and providing lesson plans for teachers.  Check their website www.sfshakes.org for  more information about these educational programs.

We thank the Alameda County Library Foundation for their generous funding which helped the Alameda County Library provide this wonderful opportunity for young people in the Fremont area!
