Onward

Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings. But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!†Yet these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand; and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals—these are the very things that destroy them.

Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.

These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead. They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever. – Jude 1:4-13

Log vs Speck?

There are many para-church organizations comprised of men who:

• Do not see eye-to-eye on every theological detail, but agree on the Gospel.

• Operate outside the bounds of ecclesiastical authority.

• Pursue bloggity/authory/Tweety/Facebooky/conferencey fame.

• Hold themselves somewhat above the fray of the unwashed masses by entertaining a few pet commenters with whom they regularly interact on their blogs.

There is more than one group of fellas who fit this description.

Thought for the Day

There is only one Christian celebrity.

I’m starting a new feature: Tweet of the Day.  I’ll share my favorite humorous, thought-provoking or challenging tweets. Suggestions are welcome!

Hexavalent Chromium or The Cost of Protecting Our Reputations

Secrecy.  It’s a two-edged sword, isn’t it?  Sometimes it’s a good thing and sometimes it’s a bad thing, especially when eternity is at stake.

Take, for instance, the on-going silence from The Gospel Coalition regarding the activities of former Gospel Coalition member, James MacDonald. Mr. MacDonald, founder of Harvest Bible Chapels, rebuffed repeated admonishments from Christian leaders and proceeded to yoke himself under the banner of Christian unity with T.D. Jakes.  Mr. Jakes, a man who has preached the false prosperity Gospel for over 30 years, as well as the heresy of modalism, was given tacit approval by MacDonald and his cohorts in the now infamous Elephant Room 2.

Now, if you’re a movie-goer you’re no doubt familiar with the Oscar-winning film, “Erin Brockovich” starring Julia Roberts in the title role.  “Erin Brockovich” is the biographical story of a single mother who finds works as a file clerk at a small, California law firm.  While tending to her duties, Erin runs across some suspicious records in which Pacific Gas & Electric offered to purchase the home of Donna Jensen, a resident of Hinkley, California. We soon learn that PG&E is responsible for poisoning the Hinkley water supply with the chemical hexavalent chromium. The toxic ground water now threatens the lives of the entire community and Erin eventually uncovers a document which demonstrates that PG&E Headquarters instructed the Hinkley station to hide the danger from the residents.

PG&E attempted to preserve their reputation. It cost human lives and $333 million, the largest settlement ever paid in a direct action lawsuit in US history.

The Gospel Coalition, through their silence, gives the appearance of attempting to do the same. The Christian public is not privy to their behind-the-scenes discussions and so the jovial, well-wishes from The Gospel Coalition seem to indicate that they do indeed wish James MacDonald God-speed in his new endeavors.

So what will the response be?  I’d like to venture a guess:

“We’re just a para-church organization.  This isn’t the church.  We don’t have the ability to exercise church discipline in matters of error or heresy.  We can’t publicly reprimand a member when he embraces a heretic, because we’re just a para-church organization. We’re not the church. And, all those people that are under James MacDonald’s teaching and authority at his church franchise…well…they’re pretty much on their own. You see, we’re not responsible for them.  Don’t you see?  We’re not their pastors.  Just like John Piper is not your pastor. So, we can’t really do anything to help those sheep.  They’ll just have to fend for themselves.  And, if they happen to think, ‘I don’t know about all this word-faith-modalism stuff, but Pastor James calls Bishop Jakes a brother so it must be okay!’  Well, there’s nothing we can do about that.”

And, now:  James MacDonald engages in outrageous race baiting. Will the silence continue?

Escorted to the Door

When a “minister of the Gospel” begins behaving more like Louis Farrakhan, surrounding himself with “staff” who escort people to the door and threaten others with arrest, while he is charging admission to a media circus under the banner of Christian unity…Houston, we have a problem.

Attention: Big Wigs

“Look, that panel is the elephant in the room of evangelicalism.

“If every small church pastor in America would realize that the power of God is the gospel and not the wisdom of men, we could rid ourselves of exploitative celebrity pastor culture that has sprung up because of our lack of confidence in the gospel.

“Next year, I wish big wigs would invite small-time pastors to be speakers at a major conference. Then we could get a glimpse of humility. The topic could be: How many Gospel Coalition charter members does it take to out a modalistic Word of Faith preacher?

You can supply your own punchline because that conference won’t happen.”  -  Brad Williams

It’s a Start

Yesterday, in regards to my serious concerns over James MacDonald and the Elephant Room, a fellow blogger tweeted the following to me:

“What would you like to see? MacDonald declared a heretic? Anathema? Break all bonds of fellowship? There’s no reason for that.”

I’d like to respond to that statement with the following from Carl Trueman.

“But we are not dealing here with men who are simply making a credible Christian profession as church members; we are dealing with pastors who lead churches and hold terrible and awesome responsibility for protecting their flocks and making sure the truth is taught. We are also dealing with men who, through the use of conferences and internet, aspire to influence your congregation and mine – not that that is necessarily wrong (e.g., what Christian does not read books written by others?); but it does give us all `a dog in the fight’, to use the American phrase. If they give Jakes a clean bill of health, then that has much wider implications than simply for the participants in the ER.”

Verse of the Day

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (2 Peter 3:8, ESV)
