What is that I see? Carbon fiber plates!? About time, good to get off the original plates, they flexed way too much. Most of my V1 JD is already converted to a DIY setup from all the mishaps of stunt flying ;) Good job Jani.

Welcome to DIY Drones

This is the home for everything about amateur Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Use the tabs and drop-down menus above to navigate the site. About us

This community created the Arduino-compatible ArduPilot, the world's first universal autopilot (planes, copters of all sorts, ground rovers). The APM 2 autopilot hardware runs a variety of powerful free Arduino-based UAV software systems, including:

ArduPlane, a pro-level UAV system for planes of all types. ArduCopter, a fully-autonomous multicopter and heli UAV system.

I'm new to all this--where do I start?              Are amateur UAVs legal? (yes)

How can I join a DIY Drones project?            Glossary of confusing terms

Contests

[image]Season Two of the Trust Time Trial (T3) Contest has now begun. The second round is an autotakeoff and landing round for both planes and copters, with a deadline of March 4th. Details here. Also active is the "Three Dealers" contest (best APM video wins), closing March 31, 2012 (Details here.)

Last Thursday, February 9 was dedicated to the Day of Science in Russia. I was invited on meetup to present ArduCopter project. There were journalists from television, some of them were really interested in quadcopter, therefore, they made a small report. Unfortunately, I had to speak in Russian, but, I hope, you'll catch the idea from the video. You can find more videos and photos from this event below.

Integrator Deliveries

The first of two Integrator unmanned aircraft systems for the U.S. Marine Corps has been flown and delivered by Insitu Inc. The first Integrator system, which give the Marines early operation of the aircraft — part of the military’s Small Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System program — is being provided under a government-owned, contractor-operated arrangement. “The Integrator system delivery at Twentynine Palms (Calif.), just less than a year-and-a-half post-contract award, is a reflection of our commitment to STUAS and our commitment to the U.S. Marine Corps,†said Insitu Senior Vice President of Integrator Programs Bill Clark. “We continue to be grateful for the opportunity to support the warfighter with cost-effective and ever-increasing ISR capability.†The Integrator, which will be operated and maintained for the Marines by Insitu, will provide persistent land-based tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance data. “This (early operational capability) system at Twentynine Palms will optimize the pre-deployment training and exercises for the Marines prior to their arrival in Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) or any other area of operation,†said Marine Corps Col. James Rector. Insitu said a second system was delivered to the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command earlier this month. Drone-makers target Asia for growth

By Saira SyedBusiness reporter, BBC News, Singapore As geo-political tensions remain, the demand for drones is set to sky-rocket in Asia, and that means new players will battle with industry giants for market share. “We’ve got quite a bit of interest from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia, India,†says Bill Schaefer from Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, a dominant player in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) industry. The US company is at the Singapore Air show, showing off its wares such as the Global Hawk to potential customers. This UAV in industry parlance is a high altitude long endurance (Hale) platform. “Something like a Global Hawk from Guam can cover 10,000 sq-mile area, so it can provide real-time surveillance of the area from a military standpoint,†says Mr Schaefer who is vice president of business development. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17053868 Bookmark It Hide Sites $$('div.d12000').each( function(e) { e.visualEffect('slide_up',{duration:0.5}) });

Indian Navy UAS Incident

Times of India VISAKHAPATNAM: An Indian Navy unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed into a hill at Ganesh Nagar near Gajuwaka RTC depot on Thursday afternoon with residents in the area which is close to Eastern Naval Command (ENC) grateful that a major tragedy had been averted. Several factories, like HPCL, Coromandel and Zinc are located in the vicinity but no loss of life or property has been reported. The accident occurred between 2.30-3 pm when Israeli-origin searcher, MK II UAV, was returning to base following a sortie which, rumours suggest, was flown to reconnoitre Maoist stronghold areas as part of Operation Green Hunt. This is the second time that a Navy aircraft has crashed in the last two years. In February 2010, a Chetak helicopter crashed into Sarada river between Anakapalle and Tummapala, 55 km from here. The pilot was killed and three officers were injured in the incident. There was a big explosion seconds after the UAV crashed and the aircraft was reduced to ashes within minutes of hitting the hill. Thankfully, the accident site was 150 metres away from a densely populated slum that is situated on the hillside. Within half-an-hour of the crash, two Navy choppers appeared overhead to [...]

US Air Force Awards AeroVironment $4.2m for Switchblade Loitering Munition System

AeroVironment, Inc.  today announced it recently received an order from the United States Air Force for Switchblade loitering munition systems and services. The $4,167,777 extension to an existing contract includes engineering services, operational Switchblade systems and operator training. AeroVironment will work with ATK , its munition subcontractor, to produce and deliver the systems. AeroVironment also announced that it performed a successful series of live fire demonstrations for multiple U.S. government customers at a military facility in December 2011. The daytime and nighttime demonstrations further illustrated the unique capabilities of the Switchblade system to neutralize threats from a stand-off distance in a variety of operating environments. The Switchblade loitering munition system launches from a small tube that can be carried in a backpack and transmits live color and infrared video wirelessly for display on AeroVironment’s standard small unmanned aircraft system (UAS) ground control unit. Upon confirming the target using the live video feed, the system operator then sends a command to the air vehicle to arm its payload and lock its trajectory onto the target. Switchblade flies quietly at high speed and delivers the effects of its onboard explosive payload with precision while minimizing collateral damage. The operator can call off a strike even after [...]

Animal rights group says drone shot down

Times and Democrat newspaper A remote-controlled aircraft owned by an animal rights group was reportedly shot down near Broxton Bridge Plantation Sunday. Steve Hindi, president of SHARK (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness), said his group was preparing to launch its Mikrokopter drone to video what he called a live pigeon shoot on Sunday when law enforcement officers and an attorney claiming to represent the privately-owned plantation near Ehrhardt tried to stop the aircraft from flying. He said the animal rights group decided to send the drone up anyway. “Seconds after it hit the air, numerous shots rang out,†Hindi said in the release. “As an act of revenge for us shutting down the pigeon slaughter, they had shot down our copter.†He claimed the shooters were “in tree cover†and “fled the scene on small motorized vehicles.†“It is important to note how dangerous this was, as they were shooting toward and into a well-travelled highway,†Hindi stated in the release. He said someone from SHARK called the Colleton County Sheriff’s Department, which took a report of the incident. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Department filed a malicious damage to property incident report. According to the report, Hindi told the responding [...]
