Kid Update

I started this post an hour ago. Then I decided to read the last few posts and figure out where I left off on kiddie updates. And you know what happens when you read through your own blog. An hour later, I have read and cried and read and cried some more. Everything from the early days with Addi to Noah starting Kindergarten and my debate last year over working. I'm so so so glad I wrote it all down. Can you imagine, not having it all writte
n down? I could kick myself for all those days and weeks I haven't blogged. These little tidbits of our lives are so important to me! I could probably find many more on my Facebook posts, but it's just not the same!

Anyway, what are the kids up to???

Noah earned another award last week (they have a skill each week and the teacher awards a student who displays it) for Cooperation. He had a field trip to a play...If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. One of my friends was chaperoning the field trip (glutton for punishment, I say!) and sent me a text mid-morning that Noah was said to have a perfect stage voice. Apparently the woman in charge of keeping the kids occupied before the show started told them about the importance of speaking slowly, clearly, and loudly when answering questions. My kid, in the way back of an auditorium with hundreds of kids, stood up and did all of that. Another friend said she knew it was him before she could even see who it was.

He wrote the sweetest paragraph called "If money grew on trees"....
I would be happy. If I found the money, I would give it to Mrs. R (his teacher) so she could spend it on books. Or give it to my sister so she could get new hering adds. She needs new hearing adds becus she keep braking her purple hearing adds. Or I would spend it on a hotell for my hole famley.

He was also invited to attend gifted math. After some assessment results, they decided to add more first graders to the gifted reading class and start a gifted math class, so he'll get to be in both.

The basketball season has wrapped up, and the Shooting Falcons were 9-1. Shawn enjoyed coaching them, and the kids all really improved a lot. We had a great group of kids and parents, and although I won't miss those early Saturdays (don't worry, soccer starts in a few weeks!), I'll miss watching him play each week. We are a basketball family, and this has really been the most fun sport to watch him play and grow in. Can't wait for next year!

The boys went to a Hawks game a few weeks ago through our basketball program and were invited to shoot a free throw on the court after the game. Noah was bummed that his shot was an airball. Shawn said it was actually closer than he expected, and after seeing the picture said maybe it would have gone in if Noah would've been at the actual line! hahaa

So what's up with Addison/Addi/Red/Adelaide/Girlfriend? She's been busy as well. We're moving forward with a dynamic display for communication. She's getting the hang of it, and we're starting to talk about which device will fit her needs best. I love seeing her actually communicate, and it has really increased her verbal skills as well. She's still making lots of unknown sounds, but occasionally a REAL one slips out and we all just look at each other and laugh. Like last night, when she was sitting on Shawn's lap on the floor, playing picnic and drawing and reading, and he said, "I love Daddy! Say I love Daddy!" and she said a bunch of stuff. And he said it again, and then she said, "Love Dada!" Precious!

We saw Dr. Brains a few weeks ago. Did a head CT (God bless the techs at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for getting it done without sedation--not an easy feat!). He said everything looks good. Apparently that scab on the back of her head wasn't from a screw because he said the screws all looked good. (There is nothing creepier than a 3D CT scan. We could see every bit of titanium mesh!) There were a few small places where there wasn't any coverage, but he said he's not worried about it. Unless someone were to poke her with a pencil in that exact area, it's unlikely that she'll have any problems. He said those areas usually get smaller as kids grow. All ventricles look good, and her head circumference (while still off the chart low) has increased appropriately, so she's definitely growing. AND....he said he'll see us in (drumrolllllll) 18 months. 18 months!!! That's the longest reprieve we've EVER been given by one of her main specialists! He does want us to see Dr. Plastics this summer, just so he can review the CT and make sure there's nothing he wants to do. Exhale!

Had a bit of a shock the other day when I was looking in one of her ears (yes, I'm weird. I look in my kids' ears all.the.time!) and saw a HUGE ball of wax. Scraped the end of the wax off with my pinkie (bad, I know!) and it was actually a GREEN ear tube! She has T tubes, which are meant to last 2-3 years. It has been 2 years. I resisted the urge to get the tweezers and yank it out, and it was gone later that day. We're already scheduled to see Dr. Ears in a few weeks, so he said as long as she's not in any pain or develops an infection, he'll just see us then.

She has recently mastered climbing up on our very TALL bed, and the other day she took off upstairs. About 10 minutes later, I decided to go check out what trouble she was into, and couldn't find her anywhere. (She likes to sit in Noah's closet with a box of books or play in the bathroom, but both of those spots were empty). Finally found her on my bed with one of Noah's chapter books (she had to have climbed on his bed to get it off his headboard, then climbed back down and gone to our room with it!). Hilarious.

In non-kid news, I whacked even more of my hair off and am getting ready to start back-to-back maternity leaves. PreK then 4th, if babies come at the right time. Should be fun! Got my Georgia teaching license--PreK thru 5, then middle grades for language arts, math, and science. Was very excited to get middle grades. Not that I want to teach middle school, but perhaps it will open more spots for me.

Origami Owl Living Lockets

I had the opportunity to review a brand NEW product recently, by a brand NEW company! Origami Owl was started by a 14 year old girl just last year. It was launched as a direct sales company in January, and I'm so excited to be bringing their Living Lockets to the blog.

Here's how it works...you choose some charms that represent your life or whatever story you choose to tell. They have tons of cute charms, pretty much anything you can think of! You choose a locket (they have gold, silver, and rose gold, all with or without crystals). You can get a medium locket (about the size of a nickel) or a large locket (about the size of a quarter). You can also choose to get a plate, which is hand-stamped, to serve as a backdrop for your charms. You can also choose a chain or dangles to dress up your locket.

Isn't this packaging just adorable? (Hi Addi!)

No, wait, it gets better.

Even my husband, who rarely gets excited about such things, was impressed with the quality and care taken to package the locket.

I chose a large silver locket, a silver plate that says "blessed", and several charms--each of the kids' birthstones, a heart to represent my marriage, a cross to represent my faith, and a silver flower, just because I thought it was pretty. The locket has a magnetic closure, so I can add more charms later. The locket came on a gorgeous 18" chain.

I am a necklace person, so I couldn't wait to get my locket. I have to say...I'm so impressed! Every time I wear it, I get compliments and questions about it. Even a group of 4th grade boys asked me about it the other day, although they may or may not have just been trying to distract me from our task at hand. ;)

These lockets are just gorgeous and would be a perfect Mother's Day or birthday gift. They're very affordable, and since you can add to them they'd make a fun ongoing gift for someone special! If you're interested in designing your own, hosting a catalog party, or even joining this growing business, please contact Independent Designer Lisa Vining. You can visit her website orher Facebook page. She is fabulous and can help you choose just the right locket! (I have no idea why this entire paragraph is underlined! Haha!)

Thirty-0ne WINNER**

I loved reading about everyone's organizational challenges. I would say mine is (well, besides the children and husband) the never-ending stuff coming in. Toys. Toys. And more toys. I purged just before Christmas, and yet we still have too many. Noah will bring random stuff home from school, from the mystical Treasure Box. And then proceed to never play with it.

And the papers. Oh, the papers. School papers. Art projects. Newsletters. Mail. Magazines. Junk mail that my husband insists on reading. I recently got 2 binders with those plastic sleeves to keep the important papers (report cards and awards) for each kid. I have one of those under-the-bed boxes for their art work, but I really need to go through it again since it's almost full and they're 5 and 7! I have a few art projects I'd love to frame, but that takes time and money.

Anyway, our Thirty-One giveaway winner was chosen at random by Noah (he chose a number, then we counted down the list of entries). I know, so scientific!

Drumroll pleeeeeeeeeeease....................

Julie! I had never visited Julie's blog before, and after a mere 5 minutes there, I felt like we have so much in common. She's got a typical boy and a girl with a very rare medical issue. She's a teacher (I think), and a busy mom. And just as we've chosen Normal, Julie's family has chosen Joy. You have to go check out her story!!!

So thanks to everyone for entering. Stay tuned tomorrow for a product review (and later in the week for a kiddie update!).

**Apparently I closed the giveaway early. Sorry if you didn't get in in time. Let's blame my cold medication, shall we? I promise to adhere to all guidelines in future giveaways. heh

Thirty-One Giveaway!

I told you a few months ago that I started selling Thirty-One Gifts, a direct-sales company for bags, totes, purses, thermals, etc. I signed up mostly for the discount (I am a bag addict!), but this little hobby has been so much fun. Turns out, it's even more fun gathering with large groups of women and helping them pick their perfect bag. Sorting the orders is also always fun, especially when you have a little help!

We just released the Spring Catalog and it is FULL of cute prints. Butterflies. Cupcakes. Polka Dots. Flowers. We have some new products, too.

My favorites? Our new Casual Cargo Purse. It's a great go-everywhere bag for the busy woman. Lots of pockets and a zipper closure make it the perfect bag or an ideal diaper bag. It can be personalized for only $7! I've been using mine to carry everything back and forth to school each day. Love being able to throw my lunch bag on top and still zip it all shut.

I also love the new Fold n Go. This little organizer comes with a cute pad of paper, and has an elastic band to close it. Great for couponing, organizing your receipts, a mini-diapering kit with a package of wipes and a few diapers, or even holding your ebook and reading list!

Another brand new item is the Mini Utility Bin. It's lined with a wipe-able surface and has a canvas exterior with two small handles. Great for organizing those bathroom counter items, as a little trash can in your office, or keeping those small toys gathered in one spot. Also fits a planted pot perfectly, so it's a nice addition to a housewarming gift. I'm thinking of getting two embroidered for Easter baskets, then using them as catch-all spots on the stairs.

So, what's in this for you? A giveaway!!! I'm giving away one of my favorite bags, an Organizing Utility Tote (it will NOT be personalized, the pic above is just to show the pattern and bag--it has 7 pockets around the outside), to one lucky winner! This bag is perfect as a mobile office, diaper bag, pool tote, or even to put your cleaning supplies in (although I think it's almost too cute for that!) and is valued at $25.

Here's how you qualify (please leave a new comment for each entry!):

1. Tell me your biggest organizational challenge. Is it your closet, the kids' toys, all that junk under the bathroom sink? Or all of the above?

2. Follow me here on the blog.

3. Go to my Thirty-One website and tell me what item in the spring catalog you are coveting the most.

If you see something you like and just have to have it (my motto is "Everyone deserves a cute new bag!"), you can shop at the website. Just click on My Events and look for Debbie's February party. This month's special is spend $31 and get 31% off one item. Woot woot!

5. An extra BONUS entry for every $31 you spend!

Giveaway open to US residents only. No purchase necessary. Will close at midnight on Sunday, 2/19/12. Winner will be announced by Wednesday, 2/22.

Normal

I have an appreciation of the Normal days. Weeks. Months. Not a Christmas goes by that I don't sit for a few minutes and cry happy tears that we're not in the hospital. That first Christmas scarred me, in a good way. I never, ever forget to appreciate the mundane or ordinary.

A few things have stirred the appreciation today. This past week, a woman in my neighborhood passed away after battling cancer twice. A 45 year old woman, with a 12 year old daughter. And while I'd only met her once, a good friend is her neighbor and another good friend was very very good friends with her. So I'm watching my friends mourn, and thinking (and crying at the thought) of leaving my children so young.

And we started some after-school childcare today. I was nervous all afternoon, wondering if Addison was crying. We're having both kids go to a neighbor's house a few streets away, a woman I've only talked with a few times. But she's a mom, and a friend of a friend, and Normal on all accounts. haha Despite a transportation mix-up, Addison went to her willingly, and was all smiles and giggles when I got there after school. Yay! I hope this will prove to be a good solution for us, and allow both Shawn and me to work into the afternoon, worry-free.

And when I picked up the kids, the new sitter told me about another mom she'd met at our neighborhood playgroup just this morning. A mom new to the 'hood, with an 11 month old with special needs. And she gave me her number. I felt a little awkward, for about 3.7 seconds. And then I dialed and had a conversation for an hour. You know how it is, when you first meet someone in this Accidental Club You Never Would Have Asked To Join. The standard getting-to-know-you questions go straight out the window and you talk doctors and meds and delays and forecasts and diagnoses. The understanding is already there. We are kindred spirits, Warrior Mamas, from the first word. And I hope she left our conversation able to exhale a tiny bit for today. It's odd to think I'm in a spot of knowledge and calm, when for so very long I wasn't. For so very long, I relished those hourlong PT sessions, where the PT would allow me to vent and cry and share, being a Warrior Mama herself. My own therapy sessions.

So today? Today I feel good. I think we're right where we need to be at this moment in time. It has not always been Normal for us, or easy. But these days are very very Normal, and I appreciate the Normalcy. And the calm. And the strength that I'm able to hopefully share.

Sushi Dip

I had a version of this dip at a New Year's Eve party earlier this month. And I have been craving it ever since. I found a recipe on Pinterest, and combined the two versions. I couldn't find the sushi rice seasoning, so went with black sesame seeds.

Here's your cast of characters:

Smudge your cream cheese block around on a plate. Helps if it's slightly soft.

Then squeeze some wasabi paste on top. I used about 2 tablespoons, and it has a nice kick. Use the back of a spoon to smooth that over the cream cheese. Pour 2 tablespoons of soy sauce on top/around, cut up 2 green onions, and sprinkle with black sesame seeds.

We'll dip Wheat Thins in it at tonight's Wine Party (everybody brings 2 bottles--one to taste and then everyone gets to take one home. Fun!) at a friend's house. Any thick cracker works.

This dip gives you the flavor of sushi, and even people who don't really like sushi seem to like the dip.

And here's the requisite cute pic o the day. Love!
