Trained as a jewelry designer, with undergraduate and graduate degrees in jewelry from the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp and the Royal College of Art in London, Tine De Ruysser is also an inventor and innovator.  Take a look.

While working on her MA she invented a material using a combination of metal and textiles. De Ruysser furthered her research and development of this material, making it the subject of her PhD program at the Royal College of Art, creating fashions and jewelry in addition to sculptural objects.

The last time I shared Baldwin & Guggisberg’s work was April 2009, in a post that focused on the lovely Guardian series, full of movement and joy.

First Memories

Their most recent body of work, Boats, is worthy of revisiting this long-time couple and collaborative team.

Anecdotes In Laughter

What is a boat if not a vessel to carry one on a journey? Baldwin and Guggisberg created this collection of boats from glass, metal and wood, assembling glass objects in each boat. A beautiful depiction of life journeys – both real and inner.

Myungjin Kim’s ceramic still life sculptures – many with scenes painted across several objects – are engaging, thought provoking and simply lovely to look at.

Still Life Vessels – Vanity

The ceramic artist builds porcelain forms then paints them with black terra sigillata before etching the final designs into each piece. The work comes alive when grouped together, allowing the viewer to conjure up their own stories as they look at the sculpture. Quite beautiful. Take your time going through the portfolios – the detail shots add real value to your viewing experience.

I make decision on what forms to make instinctively. The birdcage, bird nest, terrarium, perfume jar and lab glass jar are vessels that are curiously made out of a material that one can see through, glass,  so one simultaneously sees the outside form and inside space. I am intrigued by this and I create outside/inside surrealistic dramas with multiple point perspectives related to the shape and usage of vessel.

The DAM Archives Unlocked!

Many thanks to everyone who purchased an Archives membership last year. I hope you enjoy the thank you gift I sent to all members a few days ago.

P.S. Although all of the posts are now visible to everyone, I still have to remove a line of text/code from about 500 posts, so if you see a post with an odd sentence in the middle of it that’s why – thanks for your patience!
