What’s Next for StumbleUpon

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

It’s been 8 weeks since we released a beta version of the new StumbleUpon, and now that we’ve had some time to take in all the feedback we wanted to give a quick update on what’s next.

First off, I’d like to thank everyone who has given the new StumbleUpon a try. This was the biggest update we’ve ever made, and overall we’ve had a positive response to the new design. Our user tests have shown that the new interface is easier to use, with new members learning how to rate and share more easily. This is great to see, since the primary goal of this update was to make stumbling easier for everyone.

As with any big release, we are still iterating based on your feedback. Our redesign involved rewriting a huge part of our codebase to make it more streamlined. This gives us a new foundation to build upon in the future. Now that the hard part is nearly done, we’ll be focusing on building new features in the next couple months. Thanks to everyone for your feedback and suggestions as we’ve worked out all the bugs and small issues… most of them are now fixed thanks to your help.

Updates to StumbleBar, Direct Links and Iframe

We’ve recently heard some concerns over the implementation of our new Web StumbleBar, so we wanted to give a quick update on fixes we’ve just made. We have always used an iframe to display the web StumbleBar and site content together; our redesigned StumbleBar works just like it did before. Our previous StumbleBar design included an ‘X’ button (to close the iframe if you wanted to view the original URL) but we didn’t initially make this as part of the redesign for signed-in users. We received several requests for this feature over the last few weeks, so as of today we will be adding this back in for signed-in users. This lets you hide the StumbleBar to see the original link, and simply click back afterwards to return to stumbling.

As before, if you’d rather not use an iframe to stumble, we have StumbleUpon add-ons for most browsers to give you one-click access to stumbling and rating at any time. If you stumble a lot, we suggest getting one of these add-ons, which display the original URL every time you stumble.

To ensure webmasters’ content gets proper credit from our domain, we have added a link from our site reviews page to the original URL. This update will enable search engines to properly crawl content as they did in our old design.

We also made some changes to our recommendation algorithm in early January, to show more content from high-quality sites that match people’s interests. As with any algorithm change it is difficult to predict exactly how it will affect different types of sites. So if you’re a site owner and have experienced a change in your traffic from StumbleUpon over the last month or so, please let us know so we can investigate further.

What’s Coming Up

We have several new features in the works and we’d love to hear from you as we roll them out in the next couple months. We’ll be creating an activity feed of content liked by your friends, and make it easier to connect with people you know. We’ll also be adding Search of your Likes, to find specific content you have enjoyed in the past. We’re also investigating ways of organizing one’s likes, so groups of similar content can be shared with others. We plan to start migrating everyone into the new StumbleUpon design in early March, at which point these features will start to roll out.

Thanks for your support as we’ve refined our new design. As always, if you have any comments or suggestions please visit http://www.stumbleupon.com/feedback to let us know. StumbleUpon is a work in progress, and with your help we’ll make it as easy as possible to discover new and interesting things.

thanks!

‘Birds of a Feather’ or ‘Opposites Attract’: Are You Well-Matched on StumbleUpon?

Monday, February 13th, 2012

We haven’t done a formal scientific test, but we’d wager that couples who Stumble together stay together. We at least know that StumbleUpon brings soul mates together in ways they never expected, and StumbleUpon has even been used by one user to propose to his girlfriend.

Darin and Lisa McClure met on StumbleUpon and married shortly after. A little over a year ago they welcomed Stumble baby Kate into their lives!

But we’re curious to learn more about the similarities and differences between partners on StumbleUpon. That’s why we’re asking StumbleUpon couples (both opposite and same-sex are welcome) to contact us; we’ll look at their StumbleUpon Interests and Likes/Dislikes to find the Stumbler couples who are most alike (birds of a feather) and the most diametrically opposed (opposites attract). We’ll feature our most alike and opposite couples in a blog post this Friday and will sponsor date night outings for them (up to $200 per couple).

If you think you and your loved one are like twins or instead are the most unlikely of pairings, email community@stumbleupon.com with you and your loved one’s StumbleUpon usernames and a photo of you two together. Include “StumbleUpon Valentine’s Day Post†in the email subject, please. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Stumbling through Super Bowl XLVI

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Devoted StumbleUpon fans who are also fans of the NFL find their allegiances divided every year when the Super Bowl rolls around. But the good news is that StumbleUpon’s mobile apps (for iPhone, iPad, and Android) help mitigate this conflict as fans find that they can Stumble on the couch or at a bar at kickoff. (That’s partly why we see mobile Stumbling grow every year during the Super Bowl!) For this year’s post, we found that “Honda” had the highest growth in Explore Box Stumbling and we could track the game’s biggest plays by analyzing Stumbling patterns, such as when Manning changed the course of the game in the 4th quarter with his pass to Manningham.

Game Day Winners on the Explore Box

Most all Super Bowl related searches saw a spike in Explore Box activity on the day of the game. These terms include: Audi, Eli Manning, Giants, Honda, Patriots, Superbowl, Tom Brady, and Volkswagen.

‘Madonna’ saw a 53% drop in activity on the day of the game (spike the day before). ‘Kelly Clarkson’ showed no changes in search term activity. The same is true for the other performances in the game.

Tom Brady had the highest day over day change % in activity from 2/4 to 2/5 with 1725% increase in searches for his name.

The term ‘Patriots’ also had a higher volume in searches on the Explore Box, compared to the term ‘Giants’ on the day of the game.

Audi, Honda, and Volkswagen all had significant increases in search activity on the day of the game, with the highest volume of brand searches going to Honda.

Super Bowl Mobile Stumbling Up 6x

Mobile stumbling remained strong while desktop Stumbling behavior decreased after the game began. Last year users Stumbled at 41 Stumbles per second on their mobile devices. This year, that rate reached 237 Stumbles per second. Looks like Stumblers have been liking our mobile apps more and more!

Stumbling Patterns Follow Game Plays

We noticed that Stumbling sharply decreased at key moments in the game – especially during Eli Manning’s 4th quarter throw to Mario Manningham that clinched the game for the Giants. Before that moment, fans were happy multitasking their Stumbling needs with watching the game closely, but once that happened, more eyes were glued to the screen.

NFL Stumbler Fans

This is probably what you’d expect, but male Stumblers also subscribed to the American Football Interest (the criteria we used to designate “NFL Fans” in this chart) Stumbled less during Sunday afternoon and evening than is typical for this demographic. Female American Football subscribers in the same age range weren’t far behind.

Gender Breakdown

Considering Tom Brady’s celebrity status isn’t just tied to his football performance (ahem), we also looked at the gender breakdown of members Stumbling “Tom Brady” on the Explore Box. It’s more females than you’d think, but males still dominate:

As for the car brand terms, males were the far-and-away majority of Explore Box searchers.

They want to learn from the content they Stumble as well as the Connections they’ve made on the site. They explore the treasures they uncover and grow from the knowledge they gain. Over New Year’s my friends and I were driving through Washington’s Puget Sound and mapped our route to drive through a tiny town called Forks, Washington. Little did we know, our adventure had stumbled us onto the location of the Twilight Saga Series. Although I’ve never read the books, seeing “Jacob’s Blackberry pie†on the diner menu and spotting the restaurant where patrons can relive Bella and Edward’s first date was extremely entertaining. And they reminded us to stop by the bridal shop that houses a recreation of Bella’s prom dress, and swing by Forks’ Emergency Room to photograph Dr. Cullen’s parking spot (please note they set up a special area for tourists to photograph the hospital; please do not pass the thick yellow lines.)

After going to school in the Bay Area and working for larger corporate companies after college, I found myself really wanting to get involved in a startup where I could have a greater impact. The opportunity to work at StumbleUpon came at the perfect time and I jumped at the chance!

My favorite thing about working with our community is how I’ve come to see StumbleUpon from a whole different perspective. Understanding how each of our Stumblers uses SU differently and what it means to them adds a new dimension to our service. I love how I get to be in touch with the human element that helps SU thrive! Why We’re Against SOPA and PIPA

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

You may have heard about two bills currently being debated in Congress: the misleadingly named Stop Online Piracy Act (or SOPA for short) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). We’re encouraged by the White House’s recent statement refusing to support parts of this legislation that inhibit innovation and take too broad strokes against website owners, but the legislation has not yet been reversed.

To spread the word, we’re including this blog post and a collection of content about SOPA and PIPA in every Stumbler’s stream and encouraging Internet users like you to contact their Members of Congress and tell them to not support these bills.

SOPA, which is currently being considered in the House, purports to protect “prosperity, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation by combating the theft of U.S. property.†But this bill, along with the Senate version called PIPA that’s being put up for a vote on January 24, would likely destroy much creativity fostered by the Internet. It could cripple not only StumbleUpon but also other companies that direct users to fantastic content and user-created material. That’s why we’re standing with Google, YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, Vimeo, Reddit, and many other companies and organizations in opposing this legislation. We believe the future of the Internet depends on this protest.

We at StumbleUpon know our service is only as good as the content available for us to recommend, and that means it’s critical for us that there be a vibrant ecosystem of original content. Thus, protecting artists, musicians, filmmakers and others who contribute to this ecosystem is vital. But we think SOPA takes an overbroad and destructive approach to addressing this problem.

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.

The key problems with SOPA and PIPA, among many, is that these laws would place the burden of proof disproportionately on the alleged copyright violator, who could be anyone from a corporation to a brand new blogger, and introduce the potential for censorship on a federal level.

THE BURDEN OF PROOF PROBLEM

Under SOPA, copyright holders can simply send a notice alleging copyright infringement to payment processors, ad services and hosting providers that many of the most heavily trafficked web sites rely on, who in turn would have five days to suspend their services to the offending sites. Because the mandated response time will prevent these service providers from investigating the legitimacy of any such claim or fine-tuning their response to the allegedly offending page(s), and because these proposed laws would grant legal immunity (for example, from claims of business damage) to these service providers even if the original accusation turns out to be incorrect, they will likely shut off services to entire web sites altogether, effectively shutting down entire business operations. All of this can be done without a judge finding a web site guilty of a crime and without giving that site sufficient time to address the issue themselves. This wouldn’t just be detrimental to large companies, but would likely keep resource-constrained startups from getting off the ground or taking the kinds of risks that lead to innovation and experimentation.

The burden of proof is thus very low for the copyright holder making the claim against a web site or blog. Simply put, the responsibility is shifted disproportionately to the accused without placing enough accountability on the accuser. That’s antithetical to our system of law.

SOPA also drastically penalizes site owners and users who may unknowingly recommend content that may violate copyright. The act removes the “safe harbor†provision that gives companies like StumbleUpon enough notice and time to take action against an individual violating copyright infringement laws. Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), passed in 1998, copyright owners must notify a company of supposed infringement and give the company 30 days to investigate and have the content removed. This act is working and its safe harbor provisions have been recently validated by the courts. SOPA would mark a sharp change from this current law, where site owners are protected from civil liability if they take down the content immediately after being notified. What’s more, under SOPA, unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content would be considered a felony, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Site owners would be at risk even if they briefly and unknowingly hosted copyrighted content.

CENSORSHIP AND A STIFLED INTERNET

Additionally, the bills give the attorney general the power to create a blacklist of sites to be blocked by Internet service providers, search engines, payment services, and advertising networks without a court hearing or a trial. This creates a dangerous precedent of the government controlling what we can and can’t see on the Internet. Instead of being an open dialogue of ideas and an information superhighway, the Internet could become a slow-moving, over-censored and bland space, with site owners scrambling to find the resources to keep authorities from shutting down their businesses. This stifled Internet would never foster social revolutions in the Arab world or create the fertile grounds for businesses like StumbleUpon to grow. Frankly, SOPA and PIPA would create a relationship between the government and the technology world that’s a huge step closer to China’s Great Firewall, a nationwide system of censorship.

Below are excellent videos, articles, and web pages explaining the dangers of SOPA and PIPA. We’ll be promoting these and other pages on StumbleUpon over the next several days to better inform people of the dangers of this proposed legislation. We urge you to contact your Member of Congress to insist that he or she stop this damaging legislation today. Currently 80 Senators support SOPA – far more than oppose it.

StumbleUpon Stats: Harry Potter vs. Twilight

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Potterheads and Twi-hards, your unwavering devotion to the realm of dangerous fantasy and crafty magic has sparked the interest of the StumbleUpon team. As we take a closer look at the users who stumble through these topics, which team will ultimately prevail in the long-standing battle between heroic witches and romantically brooding vampires?

Unfortunately for the Twilight fans, the StumbleUpon popularity crown belongs to the Harry Potter team. During our data gathering, we found that there were 9 times more Harry Potter-lovers on StumbleUpon than fans of Twilight! It may be that Harry Potter has been around longer, tends to attract a wider demographic, or is simply better than Twilight (yikes!). But before we begin sharpening our fangs and calibrating our wands, let’s take a look at what we found was true with Stumbler fans of these franchises.

The Age Breakdown

Last time we checked, most of the characters in Twilight were above the age of 500 – perhaps the same is true for its fans? Well, we couldn’t find any Stumblers over 100 years old, but we did find that Twilight fans made up a broader age group compared to Harry Potter fans. While both groups found the majority of its fans to be 19 years old, Twilight fans tend to span past 25 years old, whereas Harry Potter fans seem to diminish after age 23.

Looking at both groups side by side, we see that Harry Potter fans dominate the age groups of 13-15 and 16-20, with Twilight fans dominating all the other groups thereafter.

Coke or Pepsi?

We were also wondering what these fans were also interested in on StumbleUpon, so we took a look at our data and played a game of “Coke or Pepsi?”
