Fans were rendered speechless in the final moment’s of last week’s installment of The Vampire Diaries, when Original Mama Esther cast a spell that bound all of her children together, with the ultimate intention of killing them. To be fair, her drastic actions were not completely unwarranted — her children are a scheming, murdering group of ancient vampires who treat human beings like their silly little playthings. The lone, sensitive standout, and the only offspring to give Esther a bit of pause, was Elijah (Daniel Gillies).

Unfortunately for Elijah, last night was a full moon — the celestial event Mama Esther needed to cast her wicked spell. EW caught up with Gillies after last night’s do-or-die episode, “All My Children,” to discuss last night’s action and speculate on what’s next. SPOILERS AHEAD! READ FULL STORY »

Executive producer Mark Schwahn wanted Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) to return to One Tree Hill on Feb. 22 for the CW show’s last season, but the homecoming had to feel organic. Fortunately, the storyline presented a perfect opportunity: The husband of Lucas’ longtime buddy Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) is missing, So she’d naturally turn to Lucas for a little support. “It’s a nice little gift for fans who want to see him one last time,†Schwahn says.

Janet Jackson considering 'X Factor' gig?

Less than a week after X Factor creator/judge Simon Cowell admitted he had considered Whitney Houston for the show prior to her death, another diva has entered the fray. Reports have emerged that Janet Jackson may be taking one of the seats Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger vacated earlier this year. Jackson has neither issued a confirmation nor denial yet, but she is scheduled to appear on Monday’s episode of Anderson and, from the looks of a preview, doesn’t seem closed off to the possibility.

According to People, CNN, and Billboard, when host Anderson Cooper broached the subject, Jackson responded obliquely, “No, I am not [currently a judge on The X Factor], but that’s all I really think I should say.” Cooper had but one word: “Intriguing.” Sources close to the singer have told EW that Jackson would like to join the show as a judge, though they cannot confirm whether there is a deal in the works or currently in place.

Below, try to deconstruct Jackson’s coy giggle in the preview for Monday’s episode of Anderson. READ FULL STORY »

Huge Good Wife news: Matthew Perry is joining the CBS legal drama in a recurring role.

The Friends star will play an attorney from Chicago named Mike who’s heading up a blue-ribbon panel in charge of investigating a police shooting. While Mike is described as “ultra-charming,” he won’t have an easy time winning over Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), who thinks his interest is more political than truth-seeking.

“No one skates as effortlessly between drama and comedy as Matthew Perry, so we’re especially thrilled to have him on the show,” Good Wife co-creators and exec producers Robert and Michelle King told EW in a statement. “We’re huge, huge fans, and are nearly giddy over what he can do with the role.” READ FULL STORY »

'Big Bang' beats 'Idol' at 8 but Fox rules night

Filed under: TV and tagged: American Idol, The Big Bang Theory, TV Ratings

Everyone taking a winter vacay or something? Viewership has been oddly soft this week for broadcast TV: The Big Four were either down or flat versus last week, according to early results. Though American Idol helped Fox to win Thursday among adults 18-49 (5.0 rating/13 share) and viewers (16.5 million), the show was still down 14 percent in the demo versus last week.

Idol still dominated among adults 25-54 and teens.

CBS came in second for the night with a 3.3/9 in the demo and 13.3 million viewers. Big Bang Theory beat Idol in the first half-hour among 18-49 (5.0/15 versus 4.6/13) and viewers (15.5 million versus 15 million), but it was still down 11 percent from last week. Rob! earned a 3.2/9, down 3 percent from last week, and 10.9 million, followed by Person of Interest (2.9/7, down 12 percent from last week, and 13.2 million) and The Mentalist (2.8/7, down 7 percent from last week, and 13.6 million).

ABC was third in the demo with a 2.4/6, with Wipeout earning a 1.5/4, which tied its season low, and 5.1 million, followed by Grey’s Anatomy (3.1/8, down 23 percent, and 8.1 million) and Private Practice (2.6/7, up 8 percent from last week, and 7 million). NBC hobbled in fourth place, with 30 Rock earning a 1.4/4, down 13 percent from last week, and 3.6 million, followed by Parks and Recreation (1.7/5, flat, 3.5 million), The Office (2.2/6, down 12 percent to a series low, and 4.3 million),  and Up All Night (1.5/4, down 12 percent to a series low, 3 million). That was a repeat of Grimm.

The Walking Dead returned this past Sunday and promptly broke cable ratings records…again. And while hero Rick Grimes may have shot down two shady individuals in a saloon, the man who plays him, Andrew Lincoln, tells us that threat may be far from over. It’s an undead explosion as Lincoln joins zombie aficionado Clark Collis and yours truly on the latest addition of the InsideTV Podcast. What does Lincoln think of complaints that the search for Sophia took too long? Why was he itching to start shooting people again? And how come he is telling us that “I spent most of my first 10 years with my ass out

Not only that, but Lincoln teases us on what we can expect coming up on the show in the weeks ahead. “There is a resolution to the love triangle,†the actor reveals about the Rick–Lori–Shane relationship. And people who said the first half of the season moved too slow will be overjoyed to hear Lincoln’s promise that, “There’s more blood, there’s more action, there’s more zombies. And not everybody gets out alive.†But will Lincoln make it out of the room alive without telling us what the hell was whispered into his ear at the CDC? READ FULL STORY »

We’re not sure which would make a better television special: a supernova competition between winners of The X Factor, American Idol, and The Voice, or a cage match between über-producers Simon Cowell and Nigel Lythgoe.

On Thursday, the two men engaged in a brief Twitter exchange that suggests a friendly rivalry could make for great TV if it ever found its way into broadcast. First, this from X Factor’s Cowell: “Maybe the winner of @TheXFactorUSA this yr should compete with winner of The Voice & Idol in a super final. Just a thought. I’d be up for it.”

Lythgoe then replied via @dizzyfeet: “@simoncowell suggests the IDOL winner should take on the voice and x-factor winners. The problem is the Idol winner will be a star by then.” Oh, snap! READ FULL STORY »

After Wednesday and Thursday’s episodes of the Colbert Report were canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances,” the New York Post is now reporting that Colbert’s 91-year-old mother is ailing and that the host suspended production to be with her in South Carolina. Comedy Central has not elaborated upon the cause for the sudden suspension, nor addressed a Wall Street Journal report that there had been an “emergency in Mr. Colbert’s family.”

“They are a very private family,†a source told the Post. “It’s not surprising that he did not want anyone to know what was going on.â€

At this point, next week’s schedule is moving forward as planned, though a spokesperson for Comedy Central cautioned that it “is subject to change, as was the case this week.”

Pat Buchanan and MSNBC part ways

Pat Buchanan is no longer a member of the MSNBC political broadcast team. The conservative TV pundit, who served in the Nixon White House and ran for president himself on three occasions, had been part of the network since 2002 but he hadn’t appeared on air since October, when he was suspended for controversial comments in his new book, Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025? MSNBC wished Buchanan well in a statement yesterday, but in January, the network’s boss Phil Griffin had told the New York Times, “The ideas he put forth [in his book] aren’t really appropriate for national dialogue, much less the dialogue on MSNBC.â€

“My days as a political analyst at MSNBC have come to an end,” Buchanan wrote yesterday in a lengthy post on The American Conservative website, titled “Blacklisted, but not Beaten.” “After 10 enjoyable years, I am departing, after an incessant clamor from the left that to permit me continued access to the microphones of MSNBC would be an outrage against decency, and dangerous.”

'Ghost Hunters' shocking Grant Wilson announcement translates into ratings bump

The announcement last night that Ghost Hunters‘ co-lead investigator Grant Wilson will be departing the series translated into a big ratings win for the show’s winter finale.

Last night’s hour-long episode drew 2.2 million total viewers, the show’s highest ratings in 15 months. In adults 18-49, Ghost Hunters drew 1.1 million, making it the series’ top performance in that measure since October and a season high. That 18-49 number reflects grown of 36 percent from the last finale episode, on Dec. 7.

Wilson told the audience last night that he would be leaving the show after the upcoming season. “It is with mixed emotion that I am announcing my departure from the cast of Ghost Hunters,” he said. “While paranormal investigating has always been and will remain a passion for me, after enjoying nearly eight successful seasons on television, I have made the decision to leave the series in order to focus on other aspects of my personal life.”

Wilson isn’t totally done yet, though: He’ll figure into six new episodes, beginning in April, culminating with a final new episode of Ghost Hunters on Wednesday, May 16 at 9 p.m. Twenty new episodes of the series remain for 2012. Taking Ghost Hunters timeslot in the interim is — not shockingly — Ghost Hunters International, which returns to SyFy on Feb. 22 with seven new episodes.
