Menu Plan, week of 2/20

[image]Lent is always an interesting time for me to do a meal plan. The kids and I are Catholic, which means that my daughter and I won't be eating meat on Fridays. My son is too young to "have" to avoid meat yet, but usually he eats what DD and I eat.  My husband is not Catholic, and, he's always believed that it's not a real meal if there's no meat. I could easily wind up being a short-order cook if I'm not careful!   So... here's the plan for this week:

MONDAY:
LUNCH: We'll all be home for lunch today since it's a holiday. I'm craving some of my own recipe for Broccoli Cheese Soup. I'll put it in my smaller crockpot while supper cooks in my big one!  SUPPER: new recipe: Crazy Chicken (crockpot) over rice, tossed salad
TUESDAY: Fat Tuesday! pancakes, bacon, fresh fruit  WEDNESDAY:  Tomato-Basil Soup, and my favorite Ultimate Grilled Cheese (cold meat sandwich for DH) THURSDAY: family favorite meatloaf (7pts+), mashed potatoes (3pts+), green beans (0pts+)  FRIDAY: chili for DH & DS (will cook some extra hamburger Thursday night when I make the meatloaf) , my Potato Soup recipe for DD & I  SATURDAY: homemade pizza

Recent Reads: Straight to the Heart

Straight to the Heart of: Revelation- 60 Bite-Sized Insights by Phil Moore is one book in a new Bible study series.  Unlike many Bible studies I've read, this one is broken down into easily digested segments, with a friendly tone-- none of that "textbook" feeling here.

[image]From the Publisher:
Straight to the Heart is a series of devotional commentaries for those who appreciate the insights and sound research found in commentaries but find scholarly writing dry and lacking in personal application.

The Straight to the Heart series does not cover the whole text, but focuses on key sections that communicate the main themes of each book. Although the tone is light, the text is full of useful application and backed by substantial scholarship. Its clear, thought-provoking insights will feed both mind and soul.
There's also  an entire series of the Straight to the Heart studies available, covering various books of the Bible.

Disclaimer:  I was provided with a free copy of Straight to the Heart of: Revelation- 60 Bite-Sized Insights by Kregel Publishing in return for my honest review.

5 Question Fri-Sat-day

[image]1. How often do you shave your legs in the winter?   Hmmm.  Probably about every three days.

2. Valentine's Day cards for your spouse: funny or romantic?  Funny, I guess... we usually don't buy each other cards.  We have never really done much for Valentine's Day at all, actually- we kind of regard it as one of those "Hallmark" holidays.

3. What are you most looking forward to about spring?   Warm, but not hot, weather.   I HATE snow with a passion.  Seeing Easter decorations in a store the other day made me really happy... Easter ranks right after Christmas as my favorite holiday.

4. What's your favorite way to pamper yourself?    A gourmet coffee is my most frequent small treat.  But if I really have time to relax, I love to spend time soaking in a hot bubble bath and reading a good book.

5. Does your tax return go into savings or do you spend it instantly?   We usually have it designated to pay for something we need or pay off a bill.

Recent Reads: Bloggers Boot Camp

[image]I have been blogging for years, so I wasn't sure what I'd gain from reading  Bloggers Boot Camp: Learning How to Build, Write, and Run a Successful Blog by Charlie White.   After all, I have no intention of making my blog into a career, so what did I need to learn?

It turns out, this is one of the best books I've read lately.  Mr. White not only explains the basics of how to blog, but why.   He shows you how to grow your readership, find a niche for yourself, and yes, even explore some avenues of making money with your blog.

This is not the kind of book you can sit down and read in an evening- it's more along the lines of a business textbook.  However, the information inside is well worth the reading time.

Disclaimer: My copy of this book was provided by Amazon in return for posting my honest review on their site.  I was not required to share it here on my blog, but I also chose to do so because I thought my readers might also enjoy this book!

Recent Reads: The Exceptional Life

[image]The Exceptional Life: 8 Powerful Steps to Experiencing God's Best for You
by Stephen Arterburn is a what I would describe as a shiny, happy, positive, Christian self-help book.  I enjoyed the author's writing style- pleasant, funny, often adding in little anecdotes about his own life with ADHD and all the problems that ADHD causes him here and there.

Mr. Arterburn believes that what holds most people back from totally enjoying God's blessings in life is that we are holding onto one of eight things, including guilt and shame, resentment, fear, anger, and isolation.  If we can just "let go" of whichever of these things is blocking us, Mr. Arterburn believes that we will then be wide open to fully embrace all that God offers us.

While I like the idea, in my reality, it's not that simple.  I also disagreed with  his concept of just forgiving yourself for minor transgressions against others and moving on... I feel like it's important to face that sin and that's why we have a feeling of guilt.

While I didn't agree with everything the author said, I did enjoy his writing style, and I would read another book by Stephen Arterburn.   A quick peek at Amazon showed me that he has quite a few to choose from, including both fiction and non-fiction books.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in return for posting my honest review.
