Marketing: 10, 100, and 1000 Dollar Work
So you've got a book coming out and the marketing director at your publisher calls you up, very excited about your book. You're excited too, until she tells you all the things she wants you to do to promote your book. Put up a web site. Create a blog. Make a Facebook fan page and hang out there. Get active on Google Plus. Starting tweeting. Build an e-mail list. Get on Goodreads. Print bookmarks. Speak at libraries. Do book-signings. Run a contest and give away a new Kindle. And on and on. About now, you're probably wondering when you're supposed to find the time to do all this stuff when you have a day job AND you're trying to write your next book. The first thing to remember is that when a marketing director gives you a laundry list like this, she probably knows very well that it's really just a ...

How to Write Without an Office
Does the lack of privacy keep you from writing? In a recent web class I learned more about the unique way I learn, write and study. I had to laugh but I'm in a stage of life where my natural needs in the way of office space (private, quiet, creatively decorated) aren't an option. With five kiddo's it is always loud, never private and rarely decorated to my eclectic interests. I have paper plate wreaths and paper airplanes decorating my space. My office is my shower. Quiet moments only happen in the shower so I "write" and get un-stuck there. Serious. I've even sketched plot points in the steam that collects on the door. Another "office" where you'll find me in good weather is my log bench in the yard. I write with a pad of paper and a pen, the old fashioned way. The only trouble is finding the right notebook when I ...

If I Only Knew Then…
The phrase, "If I knew then what I know now..." is applicable to my life in many ways. There are many things I wish I could tell young Stephanie. Like that bangs are not a good look for you. Nor are shorts-overalls Or, "You should not wear that hat." Or that making a scrapbook of Backstreet Boys pictures is only going to get you laughed out by your future husband. Who will be way better looking that Brian Littrell. But if there's an area of my life that makes me often think, "Man, I wish I knew then..." it's writing. From first grade on, I knew I wanted to be a novelist. I began to pursue that goal in high school (mostly during my chemistry and algebra classes - not a good choice) by sending out full length manuscripts to random publishing houses. While there are lots of really basic things I could have benefited from ...

His Love for Us Never Ends
I remember the day in the middle of the week, the Holy Spirit tugged at my heart. It invited me to take a break and spend some time with Jesus after a stressful day of school. I couldn't let this invitation go. I desired to speak to Him. Once I got home, I set my stuff down, checked my Facebook, then headed to my room and closed the door. Quiet time is not only a quiet time, but a peaceful time for me. They consist of the room lights off, the sun coming in from the open window, and worship music playing off my iPod. I enjoy my quiet times. They are not only time to myself, but time between my God and I. With the setting set and myself settled, I began to read a little from the book my grade was reading in our impact group. I couldn't help, but ...

Welcome to Soul Searching Sundays!
I love a good alliteration! I also love my down time. Quiet time when it's just me and God reflecting on life and how I fit into the big picture. Starting today, Sundays here at Writer...Interrupted will be devoted to soul searching posts. Devotionals or psalms from ordinary people like you and me, who many not have all the answers...who many not any answers, but are on a quest to connect with the living God. Here they will share their thoughts, insights, questions, struggles and answers. It is my hope that as you read their words, you will do your own soul searching and connect with the creator of the universe and come to know his son, Jesus, in a more personal and practical way! Shalom, Gina Conroy

From Contract to Shelf: My Book’s Story in Statuses and Pictures
I thought I'd take the time to reflect on the one year gestation period of my "baby." Special thanks to Facebook and my overactive status updates! Couldn't have posted this without you! December 2010: My anthology partners contact me to see if I want to resubmit our novella to Barbour now that Barbour was open to stories other than Christmas. I reluctantly say yes, knowing that if my story was contracted, I'd have to cut 36,000 words. January 2011: I determine to get on a good schedule with my historical WIP, but cryptic facebook message sent to my phone from Lynette Sowell (while in a pet store shopping for my son's belated Christmas present, a snake,) gives me pause... Since I didn't have internet access, I couldn't check my email like the message asked me to. After a couple of fb messages via cell phone, I get Lynette's number and call her, ...

“No estate in United America is more pleasantly situated than this.” - George Washington, 1790 Ever wonder where an author gets an idea for a story? The idea for Buried Deception came in 2005 when my family took a three week homeschool tour up the East coast. Mount Vernon was one of our stops. I loved everything about Mount Vernon in the... When I was a kid, I had a pretty stiff case of childhood asthma. I couldn’t run much, and because my dad was a Turkish immigrant and never played baseball or football, he never coached me to hone my skills in those regards (they still remain latent to this day). Consequently, I was usually the last one to get picked for teams during gym class. This... [Read more of this review]

Ernest Hemingway famously said that the problem with completing his classic novel A Farewell to Arms was “getting the words right.†The sentiment resonates with every writer once in a while. My grandkids and I have been busy with all kinds of science fun this month – from one grandchild’s science fair projects to another’s computer lessons that are part of his Christian home schooling program. The psalmist claimed that we live “in a dry and weary land where there is no water†(Psa. 63:1). I think he was simply saying that we humans need more than this world has to offer—that we all long for something beyond this place (which means nothing on this planet can satisfy our hopes and expectations). Bottom line: on some level our life will... [Read more of this review]
I’ve never felt like I fit. Growing up in the 70s and 80s on Long Island, New York, I didn’t know anyone whose parents (or grandparents) were divorced except mine. I looked up at our black walnut tree and cringed. This winter we’ve been denuding it of all its green “finger thick†limbs, donating pounds and pounds of them to a good cause—a friend’s alternative cancer therapies.
